UFC Quick Quote: Chuck Liddell will be released if he doesn't retire

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 06:20 PM PDT

Chuck_liddell2_medium

"He can not do it again. It will not happen again. This is a guy I care about and respect and consider a friend.... Anybody who's been in the sport long enough knows you used to be able to hit him in the face with a crowbar and you couldn't even wobble him. And that's not the case anymore. It's not worth it to me..... I guess if he asks me to release him, I'd release him. That's not what I want. But he'll never fight in the UFC again."

-- UFC President Dana White once again retires his long-time friend, former box office draw and light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, following his third straight (technical) knockout loss. White argues (via MMAFighting.com) that Father Time has likely finally caught up to 40-year-old Hall of Famer, saying that no matter what he does in the gym, or no longer does outside of it, his legendary iron chin simply can't hold up. Liddell, meanwhile, has refused to call it quits in recent post-UFC 115 interviews. He feels that he can still compete at the highest level despite losing five of his last six bouts. Perhaps he feels he can convince White to give him one more shot before hanging up the gloves, but he'll likely meet way more resistance than after his loss to Shogun Rua. Will White stick to his guns this time around or is it déjà vu all over again? Anyone interested in seeing the "Iceman" throw leather under a different banner, perhaps one closer to home in San Jose?

Scott Coker joins long list of people who 'called' Fedor's loss to Fabricio Werdum

Quoteworthy:

"I’ve been saying it for the last couple of months that Werdum was going to beat Fedor. I went on record many times saying it was going to be an upset. I’ll tell you, he’s a much bigger guy. When you saw him at the weigh-ins he’s a much larger guy which Fedor has fought a lot of guys much bigger than him but I said this fight is going to go to the ground. I really felt that way. I didn’t think it was going to go on the ground the way it unfolded with Fedor hitting him and hurting him and going to the ground. I thought at some point they would get tripped up or up against the fence and it would go down to the ground. Fabricio Werdum is probably the best heavyweight jujitsu fighter in the world and now you’re playing into his game. I go ‘I just have this feeling that he’s gonna get it done’. I’ve been calling it all month and it happened."

"I called it!" "No, I called it!" Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker joins the ever-growing list of shot callers who knew the previously top ranked Russian juggernaut known as Fedor Emelianenko was going to come up lame against the jits of "Vai Cavalo." Is the San Jose fight boss just trying to downplay his devastation? Or was he objective enough to think the Brazilian was going to be the better man on June 26?

Chris Leben: Yoshihiro Akiyama is not qualified to call me an unworthy opponent (Video)

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 11:35 AM PDT

Leben has 10 UFC wins, Akiyama has 1. Does "The Crippler" have a right to be perturbed? Or does "Sexyama" have enough overseas wins to ask for a bigger name?

'King Mo' Lawal vs 'Feijao' Cavalcante likely for Strikeforce: 'Houston' on Aug. 21

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 10:24 AM PDT

Mo-feijao_medium

Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed Lawal (7-0) is likely to make his first title defense against Rafael Cavalcante (9-2) when the promotion heads south for its latest Showtime offering tentatively scheduled for Aug. 21 in Houston, Texas.

Five Ounces of Pain first reported the pending match-up earlier today.

"King Mo" laid claim to the throne with a lopsided unanimous decision win over the highly regarded Gegard Mousasi at the Strikeforce/CBS "Saturday Night Fights" event back on April 17 in Nashville.

It was his second straight win for the San Jose-based promotion and another example of the effectiveness that accompanies the new breed of dominant wrestlers.

Expect more of that come August against the hard-hitting Brazilian.

"Feijao" came into Strikeforce after winning three straight as an Elite XC fighter. Unfortunately Mike Pyle was not impressed with his resume and stopped the winded Cavalcante at "Lawler vs. Shields" in the second round via strikes.

After ratcheting up his pre-fight training camp and conditioning, the Brazilian came storming back against Aaron Rosa for the "Challengers" division before earning his title shot with a first round technical knockout over Antwain Britt last May.

Will it be enough to take "King Mo's" crown?

Strikeforce: "Houston" has not yet been attached to a venue and a main event is still in the works. Keep it locked in to MMAmania.com for future updates to this still developing fight card.

Dana White: UFC haters and idiot websites think Alistair Overeem is 'the new guy'

Quoteworthy:

"Here we go. Alistair Overeem is gonna be the new guy? Alistsair Overeem got knocked out by Chuck Liddell at 205. You know what’s funny? Because we don’t have him signed he’ll be the new guy. The guy that Chuck knocked out at 205. All the UFC haters will be like, ‘oh yeah, this guy is the best.’ And all the idiot websites will rank him the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world."

UFC President Dana White has a little message for the idiots and UFC haters regarding Alistair Overeem, who according to the White is not "the new guy" because he has a knockout loss to Chuck Liddell in PRIDE nearly seven years ago. The Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion returned to the states to put a first round beatdown on Brett Rogers and renewed interest in his place among the top ten heavyweights, especially after the fall of Fedor Emelianenko. Is "Demolition Man" the "new guy?" Or just the new guy that Dana can't sign? What's your take, Maniacs?

UFC Quick Quote: Cain Velasquez bringing speed and power to the winner of 'Lesnar vs Carwin'

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 07:55 AM PDT

Cain-velasquez-tn_medium

"[I want to face] whoever the better fighter is. I want to fight the best. If Carwin keeps the fight standing, with his kind of punching power, I think he'll win the fight. If Brock can get the fight to the ground, with his explosiveness, with his wrestling, I think he'll win. It's whoever can execute their gameplan. It'll be a good fight no matter what. Right now I'm 250 (pounds) but I know when fight time comes around I'll be at 240-245.  That's where I feel most comfortable and at my quickest. I think I still have power at that weight so for me it's the weight [I want to] fight at."

UFC heavyweight number one contender Cain Velasquez (8-0) tells the Dave and Mahoney Morning Show that he's not concerned with the size difference between himself and the two titans who throw down in the main event of UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" this Saturday night (July 3) in Las Vegas. With the exception of a unanimous decision win over Cheick Kongo at UFC 99, the undefeated prospect has finished each of his opponents by technical knockout (punches) due to his wrestling pedigree and quick hands. Will that trend continue when he fights for the title at the end of the year? Or is he in for a rude awakening against the sport's biggest and baddest heavyweights?

UFC 116 contest: Win FREE lithograph signed by Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 07:37 AM PDT

White-bonnar-2_medium

Another event, another MMAmania.com contest give-away. And this may be one of our coolest to date.

In association with NGAUGE Inc. -- a high-end art company part-owned by none other than Stephan Bonnar -- we will award one lucky Maniac with a limited edition lithograph print, which has been autographed by the aforementioned Bonnar and Forrest Griffin (Same as the one pictured above, just not that big).

This piece of signed art retails for $200 at UFC.com, but here on MMAmania.com, it’s free.

Got your attention?

It's an opportunity to own a piece of mixed martial arts history -- "Bonnar vs. Griffin I" is the undisputed greatest fight to ever take place inside the Octagon.

So what do you have to do to win a new fantastic piece of art to hang in your living room? It’s quite simple, really. Check out complete entry details after the jump.

All you have to do is provide your fight prediction for Stephan's upcoming bout against Krzysztof Soszynski on the main card of UFC 116 (ex. Bonnar defeats Soszynski via TKO in Round 3 at 1:39; or Soszynski defeats Bonnar via submission (armbar) in Round 2 at 2:31) IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BELOW.

So it's winner, round, method and time. One entry per reader ... so make it count! If you pick a decision be sure to include the official time, as well as guess the potential scores for each round (10-9, 10-9, 8-10, etc.)

And to be on the safe side, all entries that pick a decision win must include a tie-breaker pick from the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin fight. Same criteria as above.

That’s it.

We want to thank NGAUGE Inc. for allowing MMAmania.com to hold this truly special contest.

For more information on the company and to check out other amazing pieces of work they have done click here.

In the meantime, get to guessing, Maniacs! Contest ends this Saturday (July 3, 2010) at 9 p.m. ET.

Jake Shields released from his Strikeforce contract

Posted: 01 Jul 2010 06:16 AM PDT

Shields-dana-2_medium

Three and out.

Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields has been released from his contract with Strikeforce, the San Jose-based mixed martial arts promotion he's called home since the collapse of Elite XC nearly two years ago, according to a report from Sherdog.com.

After a successful title run under the Pro Elite banner from 2007-08, Shields was picked from the rubble by Scott Coker and Co. following the financial implosion of Elite XC, expedited by Kimbogate on the "Heat" fight card in October 2008.

The Cesar Gracie disciple made his Strikeforce debut against Robbie Lawler in June 2009, strangling the former UFC brawler with a "Ruthless" guillotine just past the two minute mark in the first round of their main event attraction.

Back-to-back decision wins over Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Dan Henderson on CBS would follow, leaving Shields with an option to stay for one more fight or head for greener pastures, depending on the promotion's ability to meet his salary requirements for one last ride.

Able, but apparently not willing.

During his recent negotiations, Shields flirted with the UFC and spoke publicly about his desire to fight Octagon champions Georges "Rush" St. Pierre (welterweight) and Anderson "The Spider" Silva (middleweight).

He also served as assistant coach to Chuck Liddell on season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

While he competed in the 185-pound class in Strikeforce, Shields is a natural 170-pound competitor and has the flexibility to move between weight classes depending on what opportunities present themselves.

Of course his debut as a Zuffa employee is not yet confirmed, but widely accepted as a foregone conclusion in light of his release from Strikeforce. UFC President Dana White has gone on the record stating he'll "definitely" sign the grappling stud on multiple occasions.

In his absence, Strikeforce will likely proceed with a 185-pound tournament to determine a new champion.

So, now that the wheels are in motion, what match-ups intrigue you the most? Does Shields automatically get a crack at the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck? Or does he need to prove his merit against the winner of Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves?

Or maybe straight to the winner of Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva?

Let's hear your predictions!
