Strikeforce Challengers 9 results recap for 'Del Rosario vs Mahe'

Posted: 24 Jul 2010 04:55 AM PDT

The doors have closed at "The Ice Box" at Comcast Arena in Everett, Wash., and Strikeforce Challengers 9 is in the books.

Heavyweight knockout artists Shane del Rosario and Lolohea Mahe collided in the night's main event, and fans who were expecting fireworks were not disappointed.

Del Rosario went to work early and often on the big man's legs with some brutal low kicks. After softening the Hawaiian up with a few of those mixed with some sporadic high kicks, the undefeated knockout machine found an opening in the clinch for knockout win number eight.

There was no escape for Mahe as the bright team Oyama prospect pinned him against the fence midway through the first round and finished him off with a big knee to the dome followed up by several more to the body.

Andre Arlovski was offered up as a potential future opponent and del Rosario respectfully told the Showtime crowd that it is a fight he is ready for and willing to take. Stay tuned as we'll surely hear more about that potential barn burner in the coming days and weeks ahead.

The Strikeforce female welterweight title was up for grabs in the co-main event as hard hitting Canadian Sarah Kaufman put her championship gold and undefeated record on the line against well traveled challenger Roxanne Modefferi.

To the challenger's credit, this was probably the most competitive fight that Kaufman has ever been involved in. A lot of clinching and trip takedowns seemed to be stifling the champ's power punching game, and Modefferi clearly stole round one by executing her near flawless gameplan.

However, Kaufman adjusted, and during the second frame she realized that Modefferi just couldn't match her strength. She began brutalizing the challenger in the clinch with knees and dirty boxing, and she appeared to be taking control of the fight.

Modefferi stayed tough, though, and didn't allow Kaufman to push her off her game.

The beginning to the third round resembled the first round much more than the second, with Modefferi going back to what was successful for her earlier in the fight. After pulling guard and luring Kaufman to the ground, Modeferri made one big mistake, though, and it cost her dearly.

She latched onto the champ in an attempt to keep the fight on the ground, but Kaufman used that to her advantage by picking her up and driving her into the mat for a Gerald Harris/Rampage Jackson-esque slam knockout. It was a beautiful finish for the champion, who up until tonight had been unable to close out an opponent before the final bell under the Strikeforce banner.

Afterward, she pleaded into the camera for a chance at a fight on a Strikeforce card that didn't start with the word Challenger. I'm speculating, but I think she's going to get her wish. Up next is a match with former number one contender Marloes Coenen, and that should be a fantastic striker vs. grappler title fight.

Talented middleweights Cory "The One" Devela and Bobby Voelker went at it for three hard fought rounds with the hard headed Voelker pulling out the split decision victory. Although there was no shortage of action, the fight was primarily contested in the clinch, which was a result of some much improved takedown defense from Voelker.

After fifteen minutes were up, there was no clear winner or loser, but the judges awarded the fight to Voelker. Don't be surprised to see a rematch in the near future, though. Both fighters deserve another chance to face the other, and I doubt there will be many complaints from the fans.

In perhaps the most surprising outcome of the night, American Kickboxing Academy knockout stylist Mike Kyle finished off fellow striker and former "Iron Ring" contestant Ray "Abongo" Humphrey with a slick rear naked choke submission ... the first submission finish of his career that didn't result from strikes.

The win makes three in a row for the talented striker, who appears to be a player in the Strikeforce heavyweight division going forward.

That's a wrap on another fun night of fights from the Challenger Series.

Strikeforce Challengers 10 has been booked for August 13 at the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona and will feature a catchweight main event between Joe "Diesel" Riggs and Louis "Handgunz" Taylor. A one-night, four-women tournament will also take place on the card as Miesha Tate, Carina Damm, Hitomi Akano and Maiju Kujala will battle it out for number one contender status in the crowded welterweight division.

Now to side mount, still looking for the kimura. He has it pretty deep. Diagne is trying to escape, but this looks really bad. Foder lets it go and Diagne gets back to his feet. They stay in the clinch and Foder lands a couple of knees before Diagne tries to shoot for a takedown of his own. He ends up in a bad position on the ground for the mistake and no Foder has his back and he's landing big hammer fists to the side of Diagne's head. Diagne rolls over to his back now and Foder has side control. North south position now and the fight comes to an end there. Foder is going to win this fight.

Justin.tv and Ustream.tv latest victims in UFC anti-piracy campaign

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 02:26 PM PDT

Stream-sites_medium

The Zuffa legal eagles are flying high again, this time swooping down and sinking their talons into the scurvy pirates at Justin.tv and Ustream.tv, two popular destinations for live (and illegally broadcasted) UFC programming.

After company President Dana White vowed to make life miserable for the chiselers who stream illegal feeds of live pay-per-view events, UFC.com brings word that the Zuffa legal team may have bagged their latest casualty in the war on pirates.

Argh!

Here are some of the gory details:

On January 2, 2010, over 36,000 people watched a live streaming feed of the UFC 108 Pay-Per-View event that was uploaded from a single IP address. Less than two months later, on February 21, 2010, that same IP address was used to upload multiple live streaming feeds of the UFC 110 Pay-Per-View event, which was watched by over 78,000 non-paying users. This piracy represents a significant loss of revenue to UFC and their mobile, online, cable and satellite distribution partners each year.

While Justin himself may not be looking at hard time, the subpoenas issued today are designed to extract the necessary information from the host website to identify the parties responsible for the uploads.

Under §512(h) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, a copyright owner can obtain a subpoena from a federal court ordering a service provider to disclose the identity of a subscriber who is allegedly engaging in infringing activities.  The subpoenas served by Zuffa require Justin.tv and Ustream.tv to disclose information in their possession that Zuffa can use to identify those who have been pirating and rebroadcasting recent UFC events online.  With this information in hand, Zuffa will prosecute civil actions against the individuals who have infringed Zuffa’s copyrights.

While I'm sure not many fans are losing sleep over the UFC's missing money, pirating pay-per-views is illegal. They may not be able to stop Internet piracy (many have tried and failed) but it's not unrealistic to think a few high profile cases involving the average Joe would at least help to deter future pirates.

And it sounds like this is one fight UFC President Dana White is really looking forward to:

“I can’t wait to go after the thieves that are stealing our content. This is a fight we will not lose.”

Consider yourselves warned! (Again)

UFC 117: Jon Fitch knows Thiago Alves is bigger, stronger, and better

"He's a lot better fighter now. He's bigger, he's stronger and he's got much better wrestling. He's got wicked knees and leg kicks. I can't let him establish his leg kicks and control the pace. But I know a lot more about him. The first time we fought, the only tape I had on him was one match with Spencer Fisher and I only had a six-week training camp."

Perennial top welterweight contender Jon Fitch talks to Yahoo! about his long overdue rematch with Thiago Alves at UFC 117 on August 7. Fitch admits that there is very little he can take from their first fight back in 2006 in which the Indiana native scored a second round TKO victory over the Brazilian striking machine. Both guys are completely different fighters in their own right, so fans probably shouldn't expect the same type of fight either. The contest which will likely determine the next challenger for the welterweight crown along with the winner of the Jake Shields vs. Martin Kampmann bout at UFC 121 has seemingly been overlooked by the media and fans alike coming into the highly anticipated event. So, let's change that. Who takes the rematch and puts themselves back into contention for another shot at 170-pound gold?

Serial killer suspected in 2008 botched Lloyd Irvin armed robbery home invasion

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:19 PM PDT

Lloydtestimonial3_medium

In a scene straight out of a Hollywood horror flick, Lloyd Irvin, a mixed martial arts trainer and coach based out of the Washington, D.C. area, successfully thwarted a home invasion back in 2008.

Bloody Elbow first reported the incredibly surreal and equally terrifying news in which Irvin and his famed pupil, UFC star Brandon Vera, managed to fend off the armed burglars as they put their martial arts skills to the ultimate test in an effort to essentially save their families' lives, as well as their own.

Now, two years after the incident in which most people only experience in their nightmares, more disturbing news has surfaced. WUSA9 has learned that one of the two men whom held Irvin at gunpoint has been named as a suspected serial killer.

In the video below, Lloyd Irvin details the harrowing time in which he and his family faced danger in life's cruelest form:

There is really nothing else that can be said except for offering our sincerest condolences for those families that were not equipped with the ability to survive this situation and ultimately fell victim to an unspeakable crime.

Clay Guida: 'I'm gonna be the first champion to win Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year'

Quoteworthy:

"I don't pay attention to how many fights I've won, I just pay attention to how many consecutive wins I have. The UFC knows how I bring it. They know that if they want to have the most exciting lightweight fight and especially lightweight title fight, I'm going to be in it. They haven't had a very exciting lightweight title fight in a while. I'm gonna be the first champion to win Fight of the Night, Fight of the Year, and walk away with that strap. I go to bed hungry at night and wake up hungry in the morning for that belt. That's all I think about."

Some pretty strong words for everyone's second favorite carpenter, Clay Guida. I'm thinking Jesus would probably get the nod if a Harris poll were to be conducted. Anyway, fans would have a hard time arguing the fact that Clay gives it his all every time out, usually making for a pretty entertaining scrap. But having gone just 1-2 in his last three fights doesn't bode well for his chances in earning the title shot he so desperately craves. Next up for Guida on his journey towards the top of the 155-pound division is a contest with the dangerous Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 117 in Oakland, California on August 7. Who thinks "The Carpenter" makes it two wins in a row against the Brazilian? Predictions, por favor.

Broken arm forces Jorge Rivera to withdraw from UFC 118 fight against Alessio Sakara

Rivera-arm_medium

A broken arm has forced Jorge Rivera to withdraw from his UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" fight against Alessio Sakara at the TD Garden on August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts.

"El Conquistador" broke the unfortunate news via his Facebook account earlier today.

Rivera (18-7) was riding a three-fight winning streak following his March 31 shellacking of Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night 21 at the Bojangles Coliseum in North Carolina.

The longtime MMA veteran improved to 7-5 under the UFC banner, with his knockout win over the "Rock" perhaps being his best performance to date. The 38-year-old New England native was hoping to find himself among the big guns of the UFC middleweight division with an impressive win over "Legionarius."

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for word on a possible replacement for Rivera as well as any additional changes to the upcoming UFC 118 fight card.

"Sambo is great. Jiu-jitsu is nothing special. We went over several jiu-jitsu guys like that before. I lost because of what happened. My loss was caused by my personal mistake in the cage… I lost my head. Wanted to finish it all as soon as possible. As far as the rumors about my last fight being set up... I was asked about it many times already. I will never go against my conscience and never betray my country like that. Money doesn't matter that much to me that I could lie to people. Since I lost to Werdum, it was meant to be. And I'm thankful to God it happened that way."

Former top ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko endears himself to the grappling community by shrugging off the effectiveness of jiu-jitsu in a mixed martial arts contest. "The Last Emperor" was submitted by Fabricio Werdum (triangle choke) under the Strikeforce banner back on June 26 but insists it was his mistake -- not Werdum's skill -- that led to his shocking downfall. Anyone care to disagree? And why does Emelianenko blame himself and credit God -- but give no props to "Vai Cavalo?"

Strikeforce Challengers 9 weigh in results for 'Del Rosario vs Mahe'

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:18 AM PDT

002_sarah_kaufman_vs_roxanne_modafferi_medium

The official weigh-in event for Strikeforce Challengers 9: "Del Rosario vs. Mahe" took place last night from "The Ice Box" at Comcast Arena in Everett, WA.

The last of the formalities before tomorrow night's Showtime televised event came and went without a hitch. Each of the ten participants who will be featured on the five-fight main card hit their respective weights on their first attempt.

Undefeated heavyweight prospect Shane Del Rosario and his monster opponent Lolohea Mahe (4-1-1) are set to slug it out in the night's main event. Mahe came in just under the heavyweight division limit at 264 pounds. Del Rosario, who is giving up over 20 pounds in weight to the Hawaiian will certainly have his hands full if he wants to remain unbeaten.

Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Champion Sarah Kaufman (11-0) will also be in action against fellow female notable and international veteran Roxanne Modafferi (15-5). Both women easily made the 135 pound weight for their co-main event, world title fight.

Check out the official weigh-in results below.
