UFC 118 results, updates and LIVE fight coverage for 'Edgar vs Penn 2' on Aug. 28 in Boston Posted: 22 Jul 2010 04:21 AM PDT Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently put the finishing touches on its pay-per-view (PPV) debut from "Bean Town," which is scheduled for the TD Garden in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 28. UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" will feature a lightweight title fight rematch between division champion Frankie Edgar and recently dethroned 155-pound stalwart, BJ Penn, in the main event of the evening. The highly anticipated fight between mixed martial arts legend, Randy Couture, and boxing champion James Toney, as well as a number one 155-pound contender bout in the form of Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, are also slated to highlight another fantastic PPV offering from the world's largest fight promotion. Here is the current UFC 118 line up:
MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of UFC 118, beginning with the PPV telecast at 10 p.m. ET. In addition, we will deliver up-to-the-minute quick results of all the under card action much earlier on fight night. Remember, too, that local boys Joe Lauzon and Jorge Rivera, who are slated to battle Terry Etim and Alessio Sakara, respectively, will be featured on "Prelims Live" on Spike TV, beginning at 9 p.m. ET and leading into the PPV broadcast. We're still a couple of weeks away from showtime; therefore, feel free to share your thoughts and predictions for "Edgar vs. Penn 2" in the comments section below. UFC Quick Quote: Ross Pearson is 'a far better striker than BJ Penn' Posted: 21 Jul 2010 07:39 PM PDT
-- The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 lightweight winner, Ross Pearson, is anything but short on confidence, telling UK-based Fighters Only magazine (via Pedro Carrasco of BJPENN.COM) that he believes he can outstrike former 155-pound champion, BJ Penn. That's a bold statement, considering Penn has tremendous boxing skills in addition to his "unbelievable" ground game. In 14 career professional fights, Pearson has three (technical) knockout finishes, which is less than 30 percent. Penn, meanwhile, finishes 40 percent of his opponents via (technical) knockout. Has Pearson -- who is set to battle Cole Miller at UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15 -- lost his mind or is he, in fact, the "Real Deal?" |

UFC 121: Patrick Cote vs Tom Lawlor booked for Oct. 23 in Anaheim Posted: 21 Jul 2010 02:23 PM PDT Joe Silva has been moving faster than a flying potato on the UFC 121 fight card for the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Today the promotion's matchmaker has reportedly brought together middleweights Patrick Cote and Tom Lawlor for a 185-pound dogfight on the October 23 pay-per-view. MMAWeekly brought word of the pending match-up earlier today. Cote (13-6) made his first appearance inside the cage after nearly 20 months on the sidelines to tangle with Alan Belcher at UFC 113 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1. It did not end well. "The Predator" was submitted by "The Talent" after a controversial piledriver left him stiffer than a frozen mukluk. It was Cote's first bout since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 way back in October 2008. Lawlor (6-3) has probably reached DEFCON 5 following back-to-back losses to Aaron Simpson (UFC Fight Night 20) and Joe Doerksen (UFC 113). Despite one of the most entertaining entrances in the business and a memorable run on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 8 (from an antics perspective), dropping three straight contests doesn't bode well for anyone looking for longevity in the fight game. Anyone thinking that maybe "The Filthy Mauler" gets the job done? Headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez, UFC 121 will also feature the Octagon debut of Jake Shields when he takes on Martin Kampmann. UFC 118: James Toney plans on putting Randy Couture in the hospital Posted: 21 Jul 2010 12:30 PM PDT
Yes, it's that time again. James Toney is back with more verbal goodness courtesy of WNST in Baltimore (via SportsRadioInterviews), and this time he's predicting a trip to the hospital for Randy Couture come August 28 in Boston at UFC 118. While most fight fans will see the probability of this prognostication actually occurring at slim to none, there is a sliver of chance that "Lights Out" lives up to his nickname and puts Couture to sleep. A very, very, very tiny sliver of a chance. So, I ask you, is Toney crazy like a fox with all this talk, or just plain crazy? I have a hunch what your response is going to be... |
UFC 121: Diego Sanchez vs Paulo Thiago in the works for Oct. 23 in Anaheim Posted: 21 Jul 2010 12:06 PM PDT In case you were still unimpressed with the pending line-up for UFC 121 on Oct. 23, the promotion has assembled yet another fantastic welterweight contest, this time pitting Diego Sanchez against Paulo Thiago for its pay-per-view (PPV) extravaganza in Anaheim, California. MMAmania.com today confirmed the bomb that "Nightmare" dropped on PennyJoMMA late last night. Sanchez is coming off back-to-back losses for the second time in his career. After BJ Penn kicked him out of the lightweight division at UFC 107, rising star John Hathaway spoiled his 170-pound return, out-slugging the Albuquerque native en route to a unanimous decision win at UFC 114. The former TUF champion originally moved down a weight class in early 2009 after he felt he sacrificed too much size as a welterweight. Despite the TKO loss to "The Prodigy," most in the MMA community agreed he was enjoying a successful run as a 155-pounder. Even UFC President Dana White remarked how "soft" Sanchez looked in his bout against Hathaway. Soft is not a place you want to be against the dangerous stylings of Paulo Thiago. Despite a unanimous decision loss to Jon Fitch at UFC 100, The Brazilian supercop was in cruise control for the better part of his UFC career. That's until a pesky Dane named Martin Kampmann refused to lay down for him at UFC 115 back in June. "The Hitman" outclassed his Brazilian foe for the better part of three rounds and cooled off some of the heat surrounding Thiago's place in the division. Defeating Sanchez would be a surefire way to get some of it back. Headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez, UFC 121 will also feature the Octagon debut of Jake Shields when he takes on Martin Kampmann. Dan Hardy: 'Carlos Condit is foolish for calling me out' Posted: 21 Jul 2010 10:59 AM PDT Props: BJPenn.com Quoteworthy:
Apparently Carlos Condit called out Dan Hardy in an attempt to get the British striker to fight him, and aside from working, apparently it was a big mistake, at least according to "The Outlaw." The two top welterweights are set to square off at UFC 120 on Hardy's home turf in London, England on October 16. While the winner of this fight is still of course yet to be determined, we are guaranteed to see an all-out stand up war which is likely to leave one, if not both, of the combatants badly bruised. Let's get some early predictions on how this top-flight 170-pound contest is gonna shake out. Full video interview: Check it out. |
UFC 117: Junior dos Santos 'wants to be champion' and Roy Nelson is 'in his way' (Video) Posted: 21 Jul 2010 10:13 AM PDT |
Shark Fights 13: Houston Alexander vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou booked for Sept. 11 in Amarillo Posted: 21 Jul 2010 10:04 AM PDT Former UFC 205-pound contender Keith Jardine will get some company on September 11 when a couple of familiar faces from his former promotion join him on the Shark Fights 13: "Jardine vs. Prangley" card from the Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas. Hard-hitting light heavyweight sluggers Houston Alexander (10-6) and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (9-6) will hook 'em up in a battle of big-fisted brawlers to see who still packs the more powerful punch. A grappling chess match this ain't. "The Nebraskan Assassin" was able to right the ship after dropping five of his last six fights. Alexander outlasted David Griffin to take a unanimous decision at UFA 1: "Clash at the Coliseum" back on June 11. Despite making some noise early in his UFC career, Alexander was never able to get to the next level, primarily because of his ignorance of the ground game. While he can turn the lights out when he lands clean, the formula for toppling the friendly father of five is not much of a secret. That might not give him much to worry about against Sokoudjou. The Cameroonian has also had his share of difficulties on the ground, but aside from his striking, the former PRIDE spoiler boasts a dangerous Judo offense that could be the deciding factor in this contest. "The African Assassin" is also coming off a much-needed win, stopping Joaquim Ferreira via technical knockout at last week's Impact FC: "The Uprising" in Brisbane. Shark Fights 13 will be headlined by "The Dean of Mean," Keith Jardine, as he tangles with well-traveled MMA veteran Trevor Prangley. UFC 118: Frankie Edgar wants to know what you'll say when he beats BJ Penn ... again Posted: 21 Jul 2010 07:54 AM PDT Props: UFC.com Quoteworthy:
UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar wants to hear from the Doubting Thomases when he beats BJ Penn for a second time in the UFC 118 main event on Aug. 28 in Boston. "The Answer" took the division's top spot by bringing home the unanimous decision win after a close five round battle with the Hawaiian at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. Can Edgar keep the lightweight belt at the Jersey Shore? Or will "The Prodigy" reclaim what many believe is rightfully his? |

Report: 'Rampage' Jackson vs Lyoto Machida in the works for Fall 2010 Posted: 21 Jul 2010 06:14 AM PDT Two former UFC light heavyweight champions, Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida, are close to inking a deal that would see them square off in November 2010 in a battle to determine which fighter gets back into the 205-pound title hunt. MMA Weekly brought word of the pending match-up earlier today. Jackson (30-8) returned to cage fighting after a self-imposed exile that allowed him to participate in the A-Team movie as boyhood idol "B.A. Baracus." Unfortunately his return was not well received by former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 coach and bitter rival Rashad Evans. "Sugar" was sweet enough for three rounds to take home the unanimous decision win in their UFC 114 main event last May. It was just the second loss for "Rampage" since his UFC debut way back in February 2007. Machida (16-1) has been tied up with Mauricio Rua over the past year, splitting a pair of main event bouts with his fellow Brazilian but coming up empty in their second dance. The formerly undefeated "Dragon" was finished for the first time in his career after "Shogun" stopped him via first round knockout at UFC 113 back on May 8. At this time, no specific date or venue has been confirmed for "Jackson vs. Machida," as the promotion continues to juggle its year end events as the summer slowly begins winding down. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this pending match-up as it becomes available. |
