Posted: 10 Jul 2010 06:41 PM PDT We don't need no stinkin' tournament. One of Fort Bragg's finest will try to wear middleweight gold when the hard-hitting Tim Kennedy tests his might against decorated grappling wizard Ronaldo Souza at the upcoming Strikeforce: "Houston" event scheduled for the Toyota Center on Aug. 21 in Houston, Texas. Kennedy (12-2) elevated his status at last month's "Los Angeles" event with a first round submission win (rear naked choke) over Trevor Prangley. It was the fourth straight "W" for the Green Beret, who is perfect under the Strikeforce banner at 3-0. But he undoubtedly faces his stiffest test to date against Souza. "Jacare" (12-2) made a successful transition to the San Jose-based fight promotion following a lengthy run overseas in DREAM. After submitting Matt Lindland at last year's "Evolution" event, the Brazilian scored a unanimous decision win over Joey Villasenor at "Heavy Artillery" back in May. He's widely considered one of the sport's most dangerous grapplers. Strikeforce: "Houston" will feature a main event between current light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal in his first title defense against Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante. Lightweight stars KJ Noons and Jorge Gurgel are also scheduled to hook 'em up. For more on the August 21 event click here. |
UFC 119: Matt Serra vs Chris Lytle rematch pegged for Sept. 25 in Indianapolis Posted: 10 Jul 2010 02:26 PM PDT Matt Serra and Chris Lytle will hook 'em up one more time in a rematch from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 Finale when they throw leather at the upcoming UFC 119 event scheduled for the Conseco Fieldhouse on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to a report from MMA Weekly. Serra (11-6) narrowly squeaked past his fellow finalist on "The Comeback" edition of the Spike TV reality show. That win guaranteed him a shot at UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre -- and there isn't a mixed martial arts fan alive that doesn't know how that turned out. Unfortunately "The Terror" would give the belt back to "Rush" in their rematch at UFC 83 and go on to drop a unanimous decision loss to bitter rival Matt Hughes at UFC 98 one year later. The stocky grappler returned to the win column with a technical knockout victory over Frank Trigg at UFC 109 earlier this year. Serra has only competed four times since his 2006 bout with Lytle -- compared to the 11 scraps clocked in by "Lights Out." After a close split decision loss to Marcus Davis at UFC 93 in Dublin, the Indianapolis native has rattled off three straight three straight wins including back-to-back submission victories over Brian Foster (kneebar)and Matt Brown (armbar). Lytle (29-17-5) has appeared in a staggering 17 fights under the UFC banner and has looked better than ever in recent outings. But can he capture the win in a rematch he's been wanting under the lights of his hometown crowd? This one has "Fight of the Night" written all over it. UFC 119 will be headlined by another rematch in the making when Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir go head-to-head in the main event while "Little Nog" inches closer to a light heavyweight title shot by taking on top division prospect Ryan Bader. War Machine choked out en route to the big house at Tachi Palace Fights 5 on July 9 Posted: 10 Jul 2010 10:44 AM PDT So much for leaving on a high note. War Machine, the artist formerly known as UFC washout Jon Koppenhaver, was submitted last night (July 9) by John Alessio in his final bout before serving a one-year prison sentence (beginning July 16) for his guilty plea stemming from felony assault charges earlier this year. Tachi Palace Fights 5: "Stars and Strikes" also featured former WEC lightweight "Razor" Rob McCullough in his return to the win column with a technical knockout stoppage over Isaac de Jesus in the main event. One-time "Ultimate Fighter" Gabe Reudiger continued to impress, finishing Lenny Lovato with a barrage of punches in the first round. Despite his less-than-stellar run on TUF 5, "Godzilla" has let his fists do the talking, winning six straight fights -- all of them stoppages. Impact FC results and quick recap for 'Uprising' on July 10 in Brisbane Posted: 10 Jul 2010 10:04 AM PDT Impact FC staged an "Uprising" earlier this morning when it brought a cast of MMA notables to its July 10 pay-per-view from the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Leading the charge "Down Under" was MMA lighting rod Josh Barnett, as he took another step closer to, well, nothing really, after pounding Brazilian road block Geronimo dos Santos into a first round stoppage. Also resurfacing (and actually making weight and competing) was former UFC welterweight Karo Parisyan, who got back into the win column for the first time in nearly three years by submitting Ben Mortimer via second round submission (rear naked choke). Fellow Zuffa castaways Jeff Monson and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou also picked up wins across the globe. "The Snowman" outpointed Ubiratan Lima Marinho while the Cameroonian stopped Joaquim Ferreira via first round technical knockout. Stay tuned for more action from Impact FC as they bring its next "Uprising" to Sydney, Australia on July 18. |

UFC 121: Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez booked for Oct. 23 in Anaheim Posted: 10 Jul 2010 06:53 AM PDT Brock Lesnar may have overcome one undefeated heavyweight prospect by submitting Shane Carwin at UFC 116, but he's got another already locked and loaded for his next title defense as Cain Velasquez has agreed to face him in the main event of UFC 121 on Oct. 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Showdown Joe Ferraro confirmed the rumored match-up late last night. Lesnar (5-1) suffered a lopsided beatdown in the opening round of his July 3 title unification bout against Carwin, coming close to a technical knockout stoppage on several occasions. The former WWE star survived the blitzkrieg, shook off the cobwebs and fought back to secure an arm-triangle choke and "Submission of the Night" with a second round tap. Now Velasquez (8-0) will try to finish the job "The Engineer" started. Fresh off a UFC 110 drubbing of MMA elder statesman Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira back on Feb. 21, Velasquez had long been considered to be the next in line for a chance to rule the 265-pound weight class. Then a pesky Brazilian named Junior dos Santos had to go and complicate things by making a mockery of the heavyweight division with a torrid 5-0 run including five straight finishes. No matter. Despite arguments in favor of "Cigano," the Zuffa brass already had a long term plan for Velasquez, carefully grooming him for royalty ever since his UFC 83 debut back in April 2008. And for good reason. In addition to his perfect record, the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) star has won all six of his Octagon fights, finishing five of them by way of technical knockout (punches). His resume thus far has been impressive, but then again, so was Carwin's. Velasquez has been riding the bench since UFC 110 but has remained active at AKA while his team mates prepare for upcoming fights. Now it's his turn. Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez: Who ya' got? UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar responds to commands Posted: 09 Jul 2010 07:59 PM PDT "He took some hard shots when they were against the fence, he was looking for a way out. He was blocking some punches. At one point he tried to spin to push Shane away and took a couple shots. And then again, went for a deep half guard position and took a couple more shots. When he curled up after that is when I commanded him to fight back, which at that point he did, and then he went for feet on the hips to push Carwin away and was able to get to his knees. He pretty much ran with it. He heard -- he responded to my commands." -- Referee Josh Rosenthal was recently a guest on ESPNs "MMA Live," explaining his critical decision to let heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar continue in the first round despite eating more than 50 Shane Carwin knuckle sandwiches. Lesnar was moving, and he eventually got to his feet toward the end of the round, but few would have said boo if Rosenthal stopped the UFC 116 main event before that time. Lesnar even thanked Rosenthal several times in his post-fight remarks. That's because he came out in round two and choked out an "adrenaline-dumped" Carwin to miraculously retain his title. Steve Mazzagatti, take notes. |
