Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) legend Randy "The Natural" Couture will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Oakland A’s vs. Texas Rangers 1:10 p.m. game on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010.

First pitch is set for 12:55 pm and will be caught by A’s first baseman and die-hard UFC fan, Daric Barton.

Couture, a three-time former heavyweight champion and two-time light-heavyweight champion, is the only five-time champion in UFC history. At 47 years old, Couture is still one of the top fighters in the sport today. Couture is town promoting UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" held that night at Oracle Arena. His next fight is scheduled for Aug. 28 when he takes on boxing legend James Toney at UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass.

Nick Diaz: F-you 'Mayhem' Miller ... come down to 170 and see what's up (Video)

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 10:33 AM PDT

"We were talking about chocolate while you were trying to make fun of me..."

Diaz has a long history with "Mayhem" Miller (and chocolate) dating back long before the "Nashville" CBS brawl. Check out some of his comments from my 2007 interview with the Gracie fighter after the jump.

Jesse Holland (MMAmania): Who paints their hair and toes?

Nick Diaz: Dude, everybody. C'mon man. Even Hermes Franca. One day he comes in with that goofy haircut. You got Jens Pulver, fucking Mayhem Miller. Some bitch he was talking to tried to offer me this piece of hydrogenated chocolate. What the fuck are these guys into? Give me some real chocolate. Real fighters eat real chocolate.

Jesse Holland (MMAmania): So I guess no Christmas card for Mayhem.

Nick Diaz: They were interviewing him and he tries to get me involved and those guys cut out my intro. I think it was Sherdog or something. All they did was include the part where I was rambling on so I look like a fuck up. They need to include the whole thing or don't interview me. This guy is afraid to take an ass whooping. Whatever.

Paul Kelly: Fear and loathing in Las Vegas?

Quoteworthy:

"I always feel like I'm on borrowed time, and on thin ice, when it comes to my UFC contract, so it's important to stay as fit and healthy as possible. I need to be the best version of Paul Kelly each and every time I step inside the Octagon. The fear of getting cut is one of the main pressures we have in this game, and it's something I'm always wary of. I love competing for the UFC, and would hate to ever one day face the cut. That drives me on each and every time I step inside the Octagon. I've got a little girl and a family to provide for, so there's always so much on the line each time I fight. It's the same for all fighters, and that's what makes the sport so fascinating."

UFC lightweight Paul Kelly gives fans a rare look at the thought process of a fighter battling for job security as he heads into his undercard fight against Jacob Volkmann at UFC on Versus 2 this Sunday in San Diego. "Tellys" is 4-2 as a Zuffa employee and hopes to find himself on the televised portion of the next pay-per-view or Spike TV special by canceling "Christmas" on Aug. 1. Anyone think the Brit can make some noise in the lightweight division? Or will his fear of getting cut eventually come to fruition as he faces stiffer competition?

Shark Fights 13: Joey Villasenor vs Drew McFedries on tap for Sept. 11 in Amarillo

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 07:52 AM PDT

Villasenor-mcfedries_medium

Strikeforce middleweight mauler Joey Villasenor will take a short hiatus from his duties in San Jose to throw leather with former UFC banger Drew McFedries on the Shark Fights 13: "Jardine vs. Prangley" card on Sept. 11 from the Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas.

MMAWeekly brought word of the pending match-up on Saturday.

"Smokin'" Joe (27-7) saw his four-fight win streak come to an end at the hands (and limbs) of Ronaldo Souza at the Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" event back on May 15. "Jacare" was unable to submit the Greg Jackson disciple but did enough damage to take home the unanimous decision win.

Villasenor has been around the block a few times, competing just about everywhere except the UFC over the span of eleven years. Despite his prowess in the striking department, he's also registered 10 of his 27 wins by way of submission.

That may be an asset against the hard-hitting McFedries.

While he is unquestionably heavy-handed, "Massacre" (8-6) has coughed up four of his six losses to the tap, including his most recent defeat at the hands of Tomasz Drwal (rear naked choke) at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" last September.

McFedries left the Octagon with a record of 4-5 and was unable to break through to the next level, due largely to his ignorance of the ground game, despite showing flashes of greatness on his feet.

Don't expect him to be in any hurry to get this thing to the ground on Sept. 11.

Shark Fights 13 will be headlined by "The Dean of Mean," Keith Jardine, as he tangles with well-traveled MMA veteran Trevor Prangley. Also on tap is another light heavyweight war between Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Houston Alexander.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this still-developing fight card.

UFC Quick Quote: How many wins before Jon Jones gets a light heavyweight title shot?

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Jones_hamill_2_medium

"Jon just burst onto the scene but has looked so exciting in all his fights. I'm not privy to the thinking of Dana [White] on the matter, but Jon Jones is certainly one of those guys with a lot of expectation who Dana and Joe [Silva] will have to nurture in the correct way. A victory over Vladimir Matyushenko would already put Jones at the top and closing in on a title shot. He would probably be two or three fights away, and if he keeps winning it will be very hard to keep him from walking through that Octagon door to a title shot. Jon's got a great temperament, nobody is really pissed off by him, and he has plenty of people wanting to work out the mystery of how to beat him."

UFC UK President Marshall Zelaznik boards the "Bones" bandwagon (via ESPN.co.uk) in anticipation of Jon Jones' fight against Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC on Versus 2 on Aug. 1 in San Diego. The dynamic light heavyweight prospect has laid waste to the promotion's 205-pound division and made several veteran opponents, including Stephan Bonnar, Matt Hamill (DQ notwithstanding) and Brandon Vera look completely outmatched in the process. Is a light heavyweight title shot a foregone conclusion? Or will "The Janitor" run him down with his cleaning cart on Sunday night?

MFC 26: Antonio 'Mandingo' McKee vs Luciano Azevedo booked for 'Retribution' on Sept. 10

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Mfc26-banner_medium

Four main-card fights including a world title fight have been secured to heighten the already talent-laden lineup for MFC 26: Retribution.

The event, which will be held in Westman Place at the Keystone Centre in Brandon , Manitoba , Canada , and air live on HDNet Fights, features a co-main event pitting MFC lightweight champion Antonio "Mandingo" McKee (24-3-2) against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Luciano Azevedo (16-8).

The savvy veteran McKee has not lost since 2003 but has garnered a reputation for dragging fights out. With a new aggressive mindset, McKee has declared he will retire from mixed martial arts if Azevedo lasts five rounds against him in a quest for the 155-pound championship belt.

"I've said before that I will fight differently but I was still cautious. Not anymore. I am going to destroy Azevedo ... I will mess him up. If it goes to a decision, I will leave my gloves in the ring and walk away," touted McKee, who trains out of Lakewood , California .

Azevedo, a native of Rio de Janeiro , is an accomplished competitor, and the only fighter to earn a victory over world-renowned featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo. When the two met in 2005, Azevedo scored a rear-naked choke victory - a crowning achievement for the 26-year-old who just four months later would go on to defeat reputed striker Din Thomas.

Azevedo, who will be making his debut on North American soil at MFC 26, has won six of his last eight fights and holds 12 submission victories in his career.

Two spectacular middleweights will also see action at MFC 26 as brash British star Tom "Kong" Watson (12-3) clashes with former reality show standout Jesse "JT Money" Taylor (15-6).

Watson is an extremely gifted striker who flashed his wares in his organizational debut, scoring a first-round, head-kick knockout over Travis Galbraith at MFC 24 back in December. The Southampton, England, native has won eight straight fights and will be well-prepared for encounter with Taylor as he trains alongside Georges St. Pierre in Montreal.

Taylor , meanwhile, will be looking to get on a winning streak of his own, having won two of his last three. The Murrieta, California, product earned victories over Jason Day and veteran Murilo Bustamante in recent bouts, but sandwiched in between was a first-round submission defeat at the hands of Thales Leites in the main event of MFC 25 this past May.

In a light heavyweight battle, rugged sluggers Dwayne Lewis and Wilson Gouveia will meet in a pivotal matchup to see who remains in the mix of the MFC's 205-pound division. Lewis (11-5) had a seven-fight win streak snapped at MFC 25 when he dropped a three-round decision to former MFC light heavyweight champ Emanuel Newton.

But the Fort McMurray , Alberta , product has shown plenty of resiliency throughout his career, and knockout power as well, having finished off five opponents during that winning streak including rival heavy-hitter Marvin Eastman.

Gouveia (12-8), the American Top Team representative from Fort Lauderdale , Florida , also is in dire need of win as he too was beaten at MFC 25, dropping a one-sided decision to Ryan Jimmo. The native Brazilian does have an impressive list of beaten foes on his resume including Jon Fitch, Jason MacDonald, Jason Lambert, and Seth Petruzelli.

The live televised card on HDNet will kick off with a showdown between two tough-minded rivals as "King" Solomon Hutcherson takes on David Heath. A native of Milwaukee , Wisconsin , Hutcherson (11-6) is another reality show standout who is looking to squarely solidify his position in the MFC's middleweight ranks.

Heath (15-6), who will be making his debut at 185 pounds, has collided with numerous big names in the light heavyweight ranks, and the Tulsa , Oklahoma , resident was part of the MFC's 2009 Fight of the Year.

Two more main-card bouts including the other half of the co-main event for MFC 26 will be announced shortly.
