UFC Quick Quote: Lesnar coach confident in overcoming the 'big challenge' of Cain Velasquez

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 12:47 PM PDT

Cain-velasquez-tn_medium

"Cain Velasquez is a great fighter; he has a great level of Muay Thai and wrestling. I’m confident in Brock, and I think he’s the best heavyweight in the world. We’ll outline a strategy, make a plan and train, and I’m sure we’ll win this challenge. It’s a big challenge. Velasquez is an excellent athlete."

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach for UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, Rodrigo Medeiros, tells Sherdog.com that he's confident in a Lesnar win but still respects the challenge that undefeated division number one contender Cain Velasquez brings to the UFC 121 title fight on Oct. 23 in Anaheim. "Comprido" may have a solid argument since it was Lesnar's grappling that saved him from the heavy hands of Shane Carwin at UFC 116 earlier this month. Will Velasquez be able to finish what Carwin started on July 3? Or will he join the growing list of recent victims that fell by the wayside?

A couple of well-known UFC veterans were in action over the weekend as Mike Whitehead and Jeremy Horn both picked up victories in their fights at IFC: "Extreme Challenge" last Saturday night (July 10) from the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

Whitehead (25-7) stopped fellow Zuffa vet Chase Gormley with a fourth-round technical knockout to capture the promotion's heavyweight strap. Gormley (7-3) was a last-minute replacement for Jeff Monson after "The Snowman" withdrew due to scheduling conflicts with Impact FC.

Horn scored his fifth straight submission win since leaving the UFC in early 2009. "Gumby" choked out Sean Salmon in the first round to push his record to a staggering 85-19-5. Salmon falls to 18-11 with the loss.

Tim Ruberg, Anthony Lapsley and Kelly Warren also picked up wins in Mt. Pleasant.

Complete IFC: "Extreme Challenge" results after the jump.

Chael Sonnen: We've all had it with Anderson Silva -- his 15 minutes of fame are up

Quoteworthy:

"I'm here because I beat up everybody who got in my way. I beat every champion there's ever been except one and I've stuck my finger in his chest for four years and he wouldn't fight me. He fought a one-legged Canadian, a math teacher from Ohio and a bunch of guys who weren't even good enough to hold their spot in the company. His running is done, his 15 minutes of fame are up and I'm gonna bring it to an abrupt halt. Anderson Silva's hurt a lot of people. A couple of those guys are my friends -- and I don't have a lot of friends. That bothers me a lot. It's a payback thing, absolutely. Let's get rid of this guy. Anderson Silva's really the nuisance, he's truly the problem, we've all had it with him. There's one guy that wants to fight him and there's one guy with the skills to beat him."

Fighter, Realtor and now stand-up comic Chael Sonnen wants to rid the UFC of the "nuisance" known as Anderson Silva in their middleweight title fight at UFC 117 on August 7 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. Can the ex-political hopeful implement his wrestling attack and force the Brazilian to fight without ending up face first on the canvas a la Forrest Griffin? Or will "The Spider" pull another Saturday Night Fever and dance the night away?

Travis Reddinger added to Bellator’s Season 3 Bantamweight Tournament

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 10:18 AM PDT

Reddinger-bellator_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 12, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships' upcoming Season 3 Bantamweight Tournament continued to take shape today with the addition of 14-2 fan favorite Travis "The Hurricane" Reddinger.

The 28-year-old Pittsburgh native and St. Paul, Minn., transplant - who enters the tournament in the midst of a four-fight win streak - is known for his power, relentless approach and the oversized "BELLATOR" tattoo etched across his torso.

Reddinger says he got the tattoo about 4 ½ years ago, long before Bellator Fighting Championships exploded onto the MMA scene.

"For me it just symbolizes perseverance and the never-say-die mentality that I strive for," he said. "I know that Bellator stands for the warrior mentality as well, so it's a great honor for me to be a part of the organization. The tournament concept suits me really well and I love the exposure of being on national TV. It's all pretty surreal still. I don't think the gravity of it all has really hit me yet."

Reddinger is the fourth confirmed participant in the Bantamweight Tournament along with Kansas City brawler Danny Tims, Las Vegas-based BJJ brown belt Ulysses Gomez and fast-rising Wyoming native Nik Mamalis, who gained entry into the tournament with two stunning wins during Bellator Season 2.

Reddinger got his start in MMA in June 2005 and took his first fight about three months later, winning each of his first six pro fights decisively via TKO or submission.

The 5' 10" bantamweight now trains under the renowned MMA coach Sergio Cunha who was a trainer for both Brazilian Top Team and Chute Box Academy and worked with MMA champions past and present like Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, the Noguiera Brothers, BJ Penn and Shogun Rua.

In addition to his full-time training regimen, Reddinger is also a full-time nursing student and shares in the role of raising his 5-month-old son, Traden, along with his fiancé, Kayla.

"Being a father, it gives all of this a lot bigger purpose," he said. "It's not just me I'm fighting for. I'm looking to do something life-changing for my family."

Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney said that Reddinger poses a very real threat to whomever he faces once the tournament begins on August 12th on FOX Sports Net.

"Travis is a great competitor and someone to keep an eye on in our Bantamweight Tournament," Rebney said. "I know that he is planning on making the most of this opportunity and he definitely has the skills to make a major impact."

UFC Fight Night 22 official with 'Maia vs Belcher' and 'Wiman vs Danzig' on Sept. 15 in Austin

Belcher-maia_medium_medium

Looks like Alan Belcher may finally get that poster he was looking for.

The angst-ridden middleweight mauler has been clamoring for a major step up in competition. Well Mr. Talent, I present you Demian Maia, currently offering his services in the main event of UFC Fight Night 22 on September 15.

The promotion today officially announced the Spike TV broadcast for the Frank Erwin Special Events Center on the campus of The University of Texas in Austin.

Belcher (16-6) was last seen using Patrick Cote's head to dig for gold inside the Octagon at UFC 113 earlier this year. It was his second straight win (and second straight finish) after beating the snot out of Wilson Gouveia at UFC 107 in December of 2009.

The outspoken but hard-hitting "Talent" wants a middleweight title shot and it would be hard to argue against him if he can dispose of the Brazilian with little effort.

Maia (12-2) has been to the mountaintop, but the Sherpa sent him tumbling back down it after a five round fiasco at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. The loss to Anderson Silva was his second in three fights after stringing together ten consecutive wins.

He is undoubtedly one of the sport's most gifted grapplers, but his striking has yet to evolve to a higher level. To his credit, he showed a marked improvement in a unanimous decision win against Dan Miller at UFC 109, but there will be little margin for error against Johnny Cash's number one fan.

I believe this is referred to as the classic "Striker vs. Grappler."

Also confirmed for Sept. 15 in Austin is the lightweight rematch between Matt Wiman (12-5) and Mac Danzig (20-8-1), who first met on the undercard portion of UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" that aired on Spike TV on June 12 from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

It had all the ingredients to be an exciting contest; however, it ended in controversy as "Handsome" was awarded the submission (guillotine) victory in the first round even though Mac didn't, well, submit.

There was a mis-communication between the referee, Yves Lavigne, as well the fighters, which caused the early stoppage. Wiman thought Danzig was choked unconscious, Danzig apparently didn't respond effectively enough when questioned about his condition, and the rest is history.

Now we get to see history repeat itself .... on Spike TV ... again.

UFC 120: James McSweeney vs Tom Blackledge on tap for Oct. 16 in London

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 08:08 AM PDT

Mcsweeney-blackledge_medium

Former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 contestant James McSweeney (4-5) will return to the Octagon in front of a hometown crowd when he clashes with fellow Brit Tom Blackledge (10-6) at the upcoming UFC 120 event scheduled for October 16 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

McSweeney confirmed the bout via his official Twitter account late yesterday evening.

"The Hammer" will be heading to light heavyweight after mixed results in the 265-pound division. Despite looking good early in the season, his TUF hopes were derailed by Roy Nelson and his dreaded-belly crucifix in the semifinals of the Spike TV reality show.

He was called back to compete in the TUF 10 Finale and put a hurtin' on fellow cast mate Darrill Schoonover, stopping "The Boss" via third round technical knockout. Unfortunately McSweeney was unable to replicate that success against Travis Browne, falling to the undefeated "Hapa" on the undercard of the June 19 TUF 11 Finale.

Now he's hoping to be lighter, quicker and more successful at 205-pounds.

Standing in his way is Blackledge, whose mixed martial arts career dates back nearly ten years as a competitor on the European circuit.

Aside from his role as assistant coach on TUF 10, the Wolfslair product enjoyed a perfect 2009 fight campaign, submitting Tatsuya Mizuno at the M-1 Challenge in April before knocking out Enoch Solves Torres with a brutal head kick just a few months later, also under the M-1 banner.

A big debut against McSweeney will go a long way in establishing his place in the promotion's light heavyweight division.

UFC 120 will feature a main event between Michael "The Count" Bisping taking on Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama while Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy battles Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit.

Shinya Aoki has a message for the haters following his DREAM 15 win ...

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 07:20 AM PDT

Aoki-finger-2_medium

... That sounds like it was delivered from the psyche ward at Akagi-kohgen.

"When I caught (Kawajiri) and tried to submit him, I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought 'Ok, this match just became a death-fight' and I was going to destroy his leg. I knew Kawajiri never taps so I could not win without breaking his bone. I was hoping for an open-fracture. No one could have endured [that submission] like Kawajiri. His heart is iron. [I told him] 'I could show you 100% but I chose not to because I respect you. Thank you for this fight.' After I lost (to Gilbert Melendez), many people blamed me, but [my fiance] helped me through it all. The people who mocked me in my fight versus Melendez, I wanted to kill them all. Even in this fight, too many people said 'Kawajiri would win!'. I felt like telling these people 'Go to hell!'."

"The Tobikan Judan" (via MiddleEasy.com) is elated to have finally finished Tatsuya Kawajiri at DREAM 15 after "Crusher's" long pursuit of the lightweight champion. Aoki was stifled by Gilbert Melendez in his trip to "Nashville" last April, coming under fire for his largely underwhelming performance under the Strikeforce banner. Perhaps the disposal of Kawajiri, along with his bone crunching submission of Mizuto Hirota at FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009, makes him one of the world's most feared lightweights? Or is he simply a big fish in a little pond?

Tito Ortiz thinks Chuck Liddell should stay retired; calls out Forrest Griffin for November trilogy

Quoteworthy:

"The surgery went really, really well. I just started doing weight training so next week I start doing drills. I have to make sure I make the right steps for my future and my career. I hope I get the Chuck fight. As a fighter, I would love to kick his ass. As a human being, I don't think he should fight anymore just because health is more important than fights. Grudge matches are important to sell, but at the same time he has kids to take care of and I don't want nothin' serious to happen to him. (Getting knocked out) that many times, it gets kinda scary. I was really shocked (by the loss to Rich Franklin fight), I saw all my money go out the window. It is what it is, everything in this world happens for a reason and I'll be back at the end of November. I'd like to [fight] Forrest. If Forrest would like to do a trilogy it'd be awesome. We gave two great fights both times we fought and we'll get a triple fight more exciting than the last two."

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz targets a November 2010 return to the Octagon following neck surgery that led to his dismissal as coach from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" pulled out of his third dance with Chuck Liddell but now sounds more enthused about a Forrest Griffin trilogy out of concern for "The Iceman's" health. Anyone clamoring for Liddell vs. Ortiz III? Or Ortiz vs. Griffin III? Or neither? Match up the returning fighter as you see fit...
