UFC 117: Anderson Silva chats about Chael Sonnen, moving up in weight and his Octagon career

Anderson-silva_medium

MMAmania.com today (July 20) participated in a chat with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva courtesy of UOL in Brazil. "The Spider" dished on his upcoming challenge against Chael Sonnen in the UFC 117 main event on August 7 from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, as well as Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture and much more.

Anderson said that perhaps the fans will one day see him and Georges St. Pierre clash to find out who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

The amazing striker was seen training with actor and Aikido master Steven Seagal recently. The Spider said "Yeah, the master taught me some techniques."

Over his comment in which he called Chael Sonnen "gangster," he insists he meant nothing with that and revealed that he doesn't intend to move up to the light heavyweight division after fighting Sonnen.

"It would be a pretension on my part to move up to perform at 205-pounds or even in the heavyweight division. I feel good in my category, happy with our outcomes and there will always be someone to challenge for the 185-pound belt."

Chael has called Silva some names but the Muay Thai expert hasn't lost his cool. He remarked that "(Sonnen) can say what he wants, after all U.S. is a free country. Of course he is a good fighter and this is the reason he is in the biggest event in the world."

"The preparation is nice. People have helped me a lot. Black House family is supporting me so much. Lyoto Machida and Mark Munoz, among others, are focused for this match-up. I'm very happy. Regardless the result, I think it will be a good experience for all of us and I'm preparing for the worst" he joked.

Silva thinks it's great that Randy Couture wishes to fight him and says "It would be such an honor to face off against somebody that I got a great admiration either as a fighter or as a person. I respect him so much."

The Spider was asked about Fedor Emelianenko's status after his loss to Fabricio Werdum and how would a bout versus UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar turn out.

"In my opinion Fedor still is the best heavyweight for all the achievements he has gotten. Regarding to Fedor-Lesnar clash, I think it would be a big fight, a great spectacle and the MMA fans would be the winners."

Anderson credits his success to everything he went through in his childhood and the idols he admires today. The inspiration comes from two world class boxers. "I watched many fights of Roy Jones Jr and Muhammad Ali. I inspire myself on them and try to give my best in a different way, more intelligent and superior."

Due to his ability while striking, Anderson is cited as a man with potential to perform at the K-1 level. The Spider said "I dreamt with K-1 and had nightmares in which I was knocked out, (laughs) but I am glad with the UFC and hope to finish my career there."

Anderson Silva ends the chat analyzing his evolution since coming from Meca to UFC and thanks the fans for all the support.

"Well, I guess the technical evolution that I had was impressive. I owe this to all my coaches who helped in my formation as a fighter, athlete and trainer. I'm always in search for the perfection. Though it is something impossible, I keep improving and trying to make the difference."

"I'd like to thank God to give me health and conditions to bring gladness to the fans. Thanks everybody of the chat and I expect to speak to you soon. God bless you all."

Eric 'Butterbean' Esch: 'Kimbo Slice is going to be grasping at whatever he can get'

"I don't think Kimbo would demand a lot of money because he really hasn't proven himself. The UFC dumped him so he's gonna be grasping at whatever he can get. Kimbo is very marketable. He and [Mariusz] Pudzianowski would be a great fight. Especially if Pudzianowski learned to fight. But yeah, we definitely have the financial backing to put on the fight. Like I said there's five partners involved with Moosin, and it all works out really well. But it depends on what he does at American Top Team. I'm not even sure if he's still down there. Ricardo Liborio showed him a lot of great stuff, I'm sure. He did look better in his last fight. But it takes time. I've been fighting MMA for six years and I've still got so much more to learn. You have to be really good in one aspect to do well. We'd love to have Pudzianowski long term but he has to start listening to us. With Kimbo, it'd be the same thing."

The man affectionately known as "Butterbean" attempts to put Kimbo Slice in his place. Or, at least in a place where Moosin could sign the YouTube brawler to a relatively inexpensive deal. Rumors leaked last week of a potential Kimbo Slice vs. Mariusz Pudzianowski main event fight at Moosin's next event in October. First question I have for you, how interested would you be in seeing that fight? Second, what kind of chances do you give the fight to actually materialize? And finally, if these two gentlemen do eventually meet up, who takes it? Have at it, Maniacs.

UFC on Versus 2: Anderson Silva helping Mark Munoz prepare for Yushin Okami

"I'm really good friends with Anderson Silva and one of his main training partners as well. It's like a brotherhood. We both help each other out with our fights and especially for our upcoming fights against Chael [Sonnen] and [Yushin] Okami. Anderson actually told me that after sparring with me, and after fighting Okami, Yushin has nothing for me. He knows what Okami has, so we've been working really hard to understand how he moves and how to counter back. He's got a lot of great stuff that he's showing me."

Mark Munoz talks about his preparation for his UFC on Versus 2 co-main event fight against Yushin Okami on August 1 in San Diego. In particular, Munoz details what it's like working with his "brother," who also just so happens to be one of the two best fighters in the world, Anderson Silva. Does anybody think that Silva's past experience against "Thunder," albeit in the form of a controversial loss, will be beneficial to Mark come fight night? How do we see this contest playing out?

Report: Patrick Cote targeting UFC 121 return in Anaheim

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 02:22 PM PDT

Cote-training_medium

Former number one middleweight contender, Patrick Cote, will reportedly return to the Octagon at UFC 121 on October 23 in Anaheim, California, according to MMACanada.net.

An opponent has yet to be determined.

Cote made his first appearance inside the cage after nearly 20 months on the sidelines to tangle with Alan Belcher at UFC 113 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1.

It did not end well.

"The Predator" was submitted by "The Talent" after a controversial piledriver left him stiffer than a frozen mukluk. It was Cote's first bout since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 way back in October 2008.

The "Spider" bout resulted in a technical knockout loss for the Canadian, which he feels may have gone his way if the freak accident never happened. The 185-pound class is now teeming with possible title contenders, making his road back to the summit more than likely a long and difficult one.

Cote underwent major ACL knee surgery following his loss to Silva and then again in late summer 2009 to repair a damaged MCL (in the same knee).

To put it bluntly, he's got his work cut out for him, but if you're going to make an impression, UFC 121 is probably the best place to do it.

Headlined by Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez, the Oct. 23 pay-per-view will also feature the Octagon debut of Jake Shields when he takes on Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on Cote's opponent as it becomes available.

Randy Couture: 'If the UFC wanted me to fight Anderson Silva, I'd be all over that'

"I'm definitely interested at fighting at 205. I think Anderson would be a great fight. I'm not sure what his perspective has been the last couple of times, though. I think since the Cote fight he's taken on a different style and hasn't been as explosive, not trying to finish fights early on. I don't know if it's concerning, but it's interesting where he's coming from with that. He certainly still has that capability. Maia, Cote, he could have finished those guys if he wanted to take the risk, so I'm not sure what's going on where he doesn't want to step up and take that risk. I think he's a fantastic fighter, and if that's someone they want me to compete against I'd be all over that."

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture looks ahead to bigger and better things in the light heavyweight division -- assuming he can get past the punching power of past-his-prime pugilist James Toney at UFC 118 in Boston. "The Natural" has always been after the big fights and while his superfight with Fedor Emelianenko never came to fruition, there is a certain Spider that may need to be squished if Anderson Silva prevails over Chael Sonnen at UFC 117. How about it Maniacs, does Couture have one more trick up his sleeve for 2011?

Bellator adds two-time NCAA wrestling champ Cole Konrad to Season 3 Heavyweight Tournament

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 08:41 AM PDT

Conrad_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 20, 2010) - Cole Konrad, the two-time NCAA wrestling champion who is undefeated since making the transition into MMA earlier this year, is the latest confirmed participant in Bellator Fighting Championships' upcoming Season 3 Heavyweight Tournament.

The 26-year-old Konrad, a protégé and training partner of reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, will enter the tournament looking to improve on the unblemished 4-0 record he has compiled since making his pro debut in January. His two most recent wins came during special "Feature Fights" at Bellator 17 and Bellator 22 in May and June.

Standing at 6 feet, 5 inches tall and tipping the scales at 265 lbs., Konrad is the seventh confirmed participant in the tournament along with undefeated European finisher Damian "The Polish Pitbull" Grabowski, power-punching British behemoth Neil Grove, heavy-handed UFC veteran Eddie Sanchez, Spanish submission ace Rogent Lloret, Seattle-area knockout artist Mike "300" Hayes and Georgia-based ground-and-pound specialist Scott Barrett.

The tournament begins Aug. 12th on FOX Sports Net.

"Cole Konrad's pedigree as a wrestler is obviously second-to-none and he is quickly developing other aspects of his MMA arsenal as well," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Between Warren at 45 and Askren at 70, world class wrestlers have had a very good run with Bellator, and Cole could certainly follow in those footsteps."

Konrad, who grew up in Neenah , Wis. , won the NCAA wrestling championships at 285 lbs. while competing at the University of Minnesota in 2006 and 2007 and won a gold medal at the 2005 Pan-American Games. He has been training with Lesnar, a fellow U. of M. alumnus, for the past year and a half.

"This tournament is going to provide me with the greatest test that I've faced so far in my fighting career," Konrad said. "But this is exactly the kind of test I'm looking for. I want to get as many fights under my belt as I can and I want to keep fighting tougher guys. This tournament is going to allow me to do that.

"I'm taking it one fight at a time, but I'm planning on winning this tournament. If I wasn't planning on winning, I wouldn't bother showing up."

UFC 119 'Prelims' to feature Mitrione vs Beltran, Dollaway vs Doerksen on Spike TV

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 08:37 AM PDT

Matt-mitrone-tuf-10_medium

Spike TV today announced that their UFC 119 "Prelims" telecast will include bouts featuring Matt Mitrione vs. Joey Beltran (heavyweight) and CB Dollaway vs. Joe Doerksen (middleweight).

UFC 119 is set for September 25 from the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mitrione is a perfect 2-0 following his stint on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). After knocking out fellow contestant Marcus Jones at the Dec. 2009 TUF 10 Finale, he ended the short-lived Octagon career of Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson via second round TKO at UFC 113 back in May.

Facing him is Beltran, also 2-0 as a Zuffa employee. "The Mexicutioner" spoiled the debut of Rolles Gracie by stopping him at UFC 109 before running Tim Hague out of town with a unanimous decision win over the Canadian at UFC 113.

Also hitting the airwaves is CB Dollaway. "The Doberman" is riding back-to-back unanimous decision wins over Jay Silva (UFC Fight Night 19) and Goran Reljic (UFC 110).

Standing in his way is the "Dirte" one, Joe Doerksen. The Canadian is riding a seven-fight winning streak, including a rear naked choke over "Filthy" Tom Lawlor at UFC 113 last May.

Another round of free fights courtesy of Spike TV. What's not to like?

Tim Sylvia: I need to beat Paul Buentello to make a statement that I'm back

"In the MMA world, I need to win this fight in fashion to make a statement that I’m back. We were supposed to fight once or twice and now it’s finally going to happen. It’s going to be a great fight and show. Paul’s a gamer. He’s a good striker with a lot of knockouts. He likes to bang, just like me, and that’s what fans want to see."

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia releases a statement in anticipation of his "War on the Mainland" with fellow Zuffa castaway Paul Buentello on August 14 in Irvine. "The Maine-iac" wants to show the world he's "back" by finishing "The Headhunter," a claim he already made after submitting Mariusz Pudzianowski at Moosin MMA earlier this year. How many wins does Sylvia need to re-establish his credibility among the current crop of MMA heavyweights? Is it even possible? Without hating, let's hear an honest assessment of Tim-eh's future in combat sports.

Josh Koscheck confirms Dec. 11 title fight against Georges St. Pierre

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 07:07 AM PDT

Stpierre-koscheck_medium

UFC welterweight number one contender Josh Koscheck has a date with destiny.

The former collegiate wrestler and longtime UFC veteran today tweeted a Dec. 11 date for his 170-pound title fight against division kingpin Georges St. Pierre.

"Kos" recently wrapped up his stint as coach on Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), coaching against "Rush" on the Spike TV reality show in a spot he earned with a unanimous decision win over Paul "Semtex" Daley at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun 2" earlier this year.

With UFC 122 tentatively scheduled for Nov. 13 in Germany, followed by the TUF 12 Finale planned for Dec. 4, a date of Dec. 11 would suggest UFC 123; however, we're still several months away and the promotion could very easily shuffle dates/events as we get closer to year's end.

Koscheck strung together three consecutive wins since a surprise loss to Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson," stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" back in September 2009 and then choking out Anthony Johnson at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2."

Aside from his success inside the Octagon, his role in the December title fight can also be attributed to St. Pierre's ability to handily dispose of every would-be contender over the past two years, including AKA team mate Jon Fitch.

Of course both fighters have evolved since their first dance at UFC 74: "Respect" way back in August 2007. GSP cruised to a three round unanimous decision win in their non-title affair, the Canadian's first fight after coughing up the strap to Matt Serra at UFC 69: "Shootout."

It's been nothing but easy street since then, rattling off six straight wins and barely breaking a sweat in the process. In fact, the only knock on St. Pierre has been his decision to play it safe in recent bouts, employing a suffocating and seemingly unstoppable wrestling-based offense to neutralize his opponents and sweep the judge's scorecards.

Can he finish Koscheck and re-establish himself as the sport's most complete fighter? Or will we see a welterweight version of Wrestlemania?

We'll find out on December 11.

UFC Quick Quote: 'Outlaw 2.0' going to 'beat the stupid out of Carlos Condit' on Oct. 16 in London

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 06:14 AM PDT

Hardy-lip_medium

"It is a great fight and one I am already excited about. Condit is a former world champion who has only lost once in nearly five years, and that was on a split decision to top contender Martin Kampmann. He's a great opponent for me, after losing my UFC welterweight title challenge to Georges St-Pierre in March. I didn't want to drop too far down the pecking order and a win over Condit will make sure I stay right in the title mix. Carlos actually asked for the fight. He went to the UFC and requested me as his next opponent, I guess thinking that beating a world title challenger would look nice on his record. It is very much a case of 'be careful what you wish for' because I've taken it upon myself to do him a favour and beat the stupid out of him. I think I will get him out of there in the third, I think he won't be able to withstand the pace or the punishment late on in the fight. I will refine a game plan, but right now I am predicting a third round KO. I can also promise you'll see a new version of me in the Octagon come October, Outlaw 2.0."

Former UFC welterweight number one contender Dan Hardy returns to the Octagon in front of a hometown crowd when he clashes with former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit at the upcoming UFC 120 event on Spike TV from the O2 Arena in London, England. "The Outlaw" tells the Nottingham Post that his recent loss to Georges St. Pierre has given him the blueprint for a successful return to the top of the welterweight mountain. Is Hardy still a relevant contender in the 170-pound division? Or a flash in the pan who's going to get deep-fried by "The Natural Born Killer?"
