UFC champions Georges St. Pierre and Frankie Edgar hit the red carpet for the ESPYs (Pic). Both were unsuccessful -- St. Pierre missed out on "Best Fighter" to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Edgar dropped a decision in the "Biggest Upset" category to the Northern Iowa mens college basketball team, which upset the top seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the 2010 NCAA tournament.

The UFC 116 pay-per-view took in a gate of $4,053,990 on July 3 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to official figures from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) released today.

The final attendance of 12,740 was a result of 9,218 tickets sold and 3,522 comped tickets.

A staggering 2,194 tickets remained unsold.

That's a surprising number for what was being billed as "The biggest fight ever." Compare that to UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans," also at the MGM Grand, which sold 13,294 tickets, comped 1,702 and had 14 left over.

The UFC dished out $923,000 in fighter salaries for the live event and another $450,000 in additional bonus money for the six participants who delivered outstanding performances.

"Lesnar vs. Carwin" featured a come-from-behind victory for Brock Lesnar, who unified the heavyweight championship by submitting Shane Carwin in the second round. Chris Leben, Stephan Bonnar and Chris Lytle were also victorious.

Chris Leben ready to showcase his skills as a TUF coach opposite Wanderlei Silva

Quoteworthy:

"[Coaching TUF] would absolutely be huge for me. I mean, I am a coach, that's what I do. I have my own gym with a whole group of guys that I train. I'd love the opportunity to get on TV and really showcase my skills and let the world see. I've changed quite a bit from the first season from that cocky, punk kid. I'm a mixed martial artists and I'm a fantastic coach. Besides that opportunity, Wanderlei Silva is my favorite fighter. By coming up and watching him and watching the wars that he's fought, I absolutely love the guy and I'd like to think I somewhat model my fighting style after his. Who doesn't want to go out and take out their hero?"

Former TUF contestant Chris Leben hopes to eventually return to the Spike TV reality show as a coach against Wanderlei Silva after submitting highly-regarded Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" on July 3 in Las Vegas. Following his TKO of Aaron Simpson at the June 16 TUF 11 Finale, "The Crippler" was flown in as a late replacement for the injured Brazilian, who was expected to face "Sexyama" in the co-main event. Now Leben holds the "W" over "The Axe Murderer's" foe and believes that earned him a spot against the former PRIDE champ. Will the UFC hold out for Leben vs. Silva on TUF 13 while Wandy heals from recent injuries?

Bellator 24: Hector Lombard vs Herbert Goodman booked for Aug. 12 in Hollywood

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 14, 2010) - Reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard will look to continue his domination of the middleweight division in a special non-title fight with former NFL standout Herbert "Whisper" Goodman as part of Bellator 24 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Aug. 12th.

Lombard (26-2-1) puts his 14-fight winning streak on the line against Goodman (15-8), who was a standout running back and kick returner for the Green Bay Packers in 2000 and 2001 before transitioning to MMA in late 2006.

Lombard was last in action at Bellator 18 on May 13th when he thrilled a capacity crowd at the Monroe ( La. ) Civic Center with a 6-second highlight-reel knockout of UFC veteran Jay Silva, snatching the Bellator record for fastest KO in the process. The dramatic win helped solidify the former Olympic judo competitor's status as one of the top 185-pounders in the world.

Standing at just 5 feet, 9 inches tall, the chiseled Lombard has finished 16 of his 26 wins by knockout and has never been stopped in 29 career appearances. He is currently scheduled to face Bellator Season 2 Middleweight Champion Alexander "Storm" Shlemenko (30-4) in a highly-anticipated title defense later this fall.

"Hector Lombard is at the top of his game and one of the best middleweights in the world. There are very few fighters out there who want to fight him right now," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "But Whisper Goodman is hungry for the challenge and he's been through the battles both in the NFL and in MMA. I'm looking forward to watching how he matches up with Hector."

Goodman, who was born and raised in South Florida , has notable pro wins over "The Ultimate Fighter 7" veteran Dante Rivera and UFC standout Jordan Radev. He has a reputation as a no-nonsense fighter, having finished 13 of his 15 victories decisively via KO or TKO.

Admittedly excited about returning to fight Lombard in front of a hometown crowd, Goodman says he isn't intimidated by his hulking opponent.

"I know he's tough and I know he's the Bellator champion, but I'll fight anyone," Goodman said. "This is a great opportunity for me so I'm just going to apply my game plan and take what he gives me."

Lombard, for his part, said he is looking forward to another fight in his adopted home state of Florida , where he currently trains as a member of American Top Team.

"I'm looking forward to fighting in my home town, South Florida, where all my fans can come and watch," Lombard said. "I appreciate the opportunity the Seminole Tribe and Bellator have given me. Herbert Goodman is a great athlete and will be a good opponent and it will be a great fight."

UFC 116 drug test results come back clean from NSAC for 'Lesnar vs Carwin'

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 11:44 AM PDT

Ufc86drugresults_medium_medium_medium

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today confirmed that 15 of the 22 competitors who were tested for illegal/banned substances after competing at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" on July 3 have all passed with flying colors.

Main event participants Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin as well as Chris Leben, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Chris Lytle, Matt Brown, Krzysztof Soszynski, Stephan Bonnar, Brendan Schaub, Kendall Grove, Gerald Harris, Ricardo Romero, Jon Madsen, George Sotiropoulos and Daniel Roberts were all screened for performance enhancers such as steroids and drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others.

Results from these battery of tests all returned negative.

The fighters mentioned above were randomly selected. However, athletic commissions typically test the main event participants and fight night winners, as well as those who have failed drug tests in the past.

UFC 116 featured a main event between heavyweight wrecking machines Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin with the title of the best heavyweight in MMA on the line.

And though it looked early like Carwin's power would see him prevail, Lesnar's ability to absorb some serious punishment coupled with his wrestling and an ever-improving ground game proved to be too much too handle.

The night's co-main event saw Chris Leben perform the unthinkable and defeat Yoshihiro Akiyama on just a week's notice, catapulting himself towards the top of the middleweight division.

UFC 120: James Wilks vs Claude Patrick in the works for October 16 in London

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 11:08 AM PDT

Wilks-patrick_medium_medium

A welterweight match up in the form of James Wilks vs. Claude Patrick is likely to take place at UFC 120 on October 16 in London, England. The event, featuring contests between Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama as well Dan Hardy and Carlos Condit is set to air on tape delay on Spike TV in the U.S.

Mauro Ranallo of The Fight Show first reported the bout yesterday.

Wilks disposed of DaMarques Johnson to win The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale last June and has gone 1-1 since being crowned the next "Ultimate Fighter."

While on the Spike TV reality show, James ran through Che Mills and a double shot of Frank Lester as a member of Team UK but really got people talking with his complete domination of Johnson to win the show.

Unfortunately "Lightning" didn't strike twice for Wilks in his second appearance inside the UFC cage. After steamrolling DaMarques Johnson at the June 2009 TUF Finale, he was upset by "The Immortal" Matt Brown in front of his fellow countrymen at UFC 105 last November.

James did recover nicely however, as he got by Peter Sobotta via unanimous decision back at UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin." A second win in a row won't come easy as he takes on the Canada native with an eye-popping 11-fight win streak.

Claude Patrick may not have the name recognition that Wilks holds, but what he does have is an impressive record and a sick ground game to go with it.

"The Prince" just recently made his Octagon debut in victorious fashion defeating Ricardo Funch via guillotine in round two at UFC 115.

Butterbean: Mariusz Pudzianowski should fire his trainer and get lots of help -- he punches like a girl

Quoteworthy:

"I know he allegedly broke his foot in the fight against Sylvia, but he didn’t show anything before he quit. Pudzianowski has no stand-up and as strong as he is, he punches like a girl. All he does is throw arm punches. He needs a lot of help. He’s the 5-time World’s Strongest Man but hits like a 130-pounder, not a strong man who weighs 270 pounds. He doesn’t have the skill level to get to the level he wants to fight. Once he gets a stand-up game – you can’t have a ground game working without one – he could be a force in MMA. He still needs some work on his ground game, too. We all know he’s very strong but that’s not enough at the highest level of MMA. I don’t know who has been coaching him but that trainer should be fired. Pudzianowski needs to prove himself, showing he has a good stand-up game by beating a good MMA fighter, before he gets another big fight like a spot on the October 9 show."

Portly pugilistic powerhouse Eric Esch loosens the lugnuts on the muscular meatwagon known as Polish plate picker-upper Mariusz Pudizanowski. "Butterbean" is the chubby cheerleader for the upstart Moosin MMA promotion and was so thoroughly disgusted with the performance from the "World's Strongest Man" against Tim Sylvia back in May that he's asking event officials to leave him off the upcoming Moosin 2 pay-per-view on October 9. Anyone disagree?

In a lightweight clash, Curtis Demarce (8-7), who has won five straight fights, matches up against former reality show standout Richie "The Dirty Samurai" Hightower (8-4) of Phoenix, Arizona. And in what has become a bitter feud, Brandon native Steve Fader (2-1) will look to silence rival Nick Hrynchyshyn (2-1) of Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The undercard will also pit Thunder Bay, Ontario, native Nathan Gunn (7-2) versus Dami Egbeyemi (3-0) of Regina, Saskatchewan.

A rundown of the complete MFC 26: Retribution fight card will be forthcoming as well as details on the official press conference and weigh-in.

UFC Quick Quote: Austin 3:16 says Randy Couture just kicked your ass

Couture-austin_medium

"I didn't see [Randy Couture's] acting chops but I did see his fight skills. When you get the chance to fight with one of the elite fighters of all time, it's just a fun day at the office. Coming from a pro wrestling background people would always ask me 'Well what would happen if you and Randy squared off?' I pretty much chalk it up to this: I was a pro wrestler and Randy is a pro fighter. I was glad we were on a movie set and not in the Octagon. He's a very classy guy, very professional, he didn't stiff me one single time. I think he was very leery, very understanding of the skills that he possesses, a true professional. It was a blast fighting with Randy but I knew that if he let one go I was probably gonna be looking up at the lights."

Former WWE superstar Steve Austin talks about mixing it up in Hollywood with UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture on this week's episode of Pro MMA Radio. "Stone Cold" was cast opposite "The Natural" on the set of Sylvester Stallone's upcoming "Expendables" movie, in theaters on August 13. In spite of his reputation of being one tough S.O.B., "The Texas Rattlesnake" had no problem admitting that he's way out of his league when it comes to professional fighting, highlighting the difference between pro wrestlers and pro fighters. Are you listening, Dave Bautista?
