UFC 117 conference call highlights and recap

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 01:21 PM PDT

Ufc117-sched_medium

"I'm going to take his belt on the 7th, and Dana is going to fire him on the 8th."

That's just one of the many quoteworthy lines that Chael Sonnen dropped on today's UFC 117 conference call. The Oregon native surely came prepared to do his part in selling the August 7th UFC middleweight title fight which is set to go down in Oakland, California.

The champion... uh, not so much. Anderson Silva seemed less interested in answering the media's questions than he was in finishing his fight with Demian Maia at UFC 112.

To say it was a bizarre hour of Q & A would be a gross understatement. At one point during the call, Silva's manager and translator Ed Soares began speaking for him as Anderson virtually refused to respond to questions with anything but one word answers.

As you can imagine, highlights were aplenty. Check them out after the jump:

Anderson Silva on whether this fight is his most anticipated fight of his career, "Nope."

Chael Sonnen: "Anderson has a lot of tools. I don't see a glaring weakness anywhere. I might look at tape this week."

Sonnen: "I'm the toughest guy in the company. There has never been a guy with earrings that can out-tough me and he's not gonna be the first."

Sonnen: "There are a lot of distractions for this fight. But if you're in the main event that's how it should be. You should have to answer a lot of questions about the fight and if you notice, all the questions are coming to me. I'm a partner with the UFC, he's an employee. People want to talk to me because I give coherent answers unlike my opponent who's on speaker phone somewhere driving in his car giving 'yes' and 'no' answers."

Silva: "Dana can say what he wants to say," regarding cutting him with another poor performance.

Sonnen: "I make all my comments with my political future in mind. I received 96.3 percent of the vote. I'm wildly popular."

Silva on whether he is tired with the whole media process in the lead up to the fight, "No."

Silva: "No, I'm not concerned about Sonnen's wrestling. I didn't have a problem with Dan Henderson and he was one of the best wrestlers around."

Silva on future fights, "I'm only thinking about my fight next week."

Sonnen on who he would want to fight should he win, "I think Vitor Belfort is in line next. That's not really who i would want to fight. I have a guy in mind and I'll challenge him on the night of the 7th."

Sonnen on why he dislikes Silva so much, "I've never had a problem with what he does in the cage. I don't believe in sportsmanship and honor. It's a fight. I just don't like him. I don't have to have a reason, not everybody can like everybody. I'm going to got out there and take his belt on the 7th and Dana's gonna fire him on the 8th."

Silva said he's very excited about the atmosphere in the arena regarding the Brazil vs. U.S. match-ups.

Sonnen on the U.S. vs. Brazil match-ups, "I don't think it'll be too different. American fans aren't real biased. We just like whoever we like as opposed to other countries who are more loyal."

Sonnen: "I don't think Anderson has any fans. He's the only guy in the world that has been a champion for 4 years and only has one sponsor. Nobody wants to associate themselves with him. Nobody wants to dress like him or be like him. I, on the other hand, have numerous sponsors who do very well. That should tell you all you need to know about his popularity."

Sonnen: "Representing Oregon gives me a lot of motivation."

Sonnen: "Anderson has been picking his fights for years. He fought a Math teacher from Ohio and a one-legged Canadian. Things will be drastically different for him when he fights a world-class wrestler like myself."

Silva on whether he cares about fans booing him, "Fans are fans. They're cheering one minute and booing the next. Fans don't really understand what's happening in the cage. I don't blame them.

Silva on Sonnen's trash talk, "I actually think that what Chael is saying is funny."

Sonnen: "There's no argument that I'm the only one promoting this fight. Of course I'm promoting this fight myself. Nobody wants to hear from him. Nobody is making any money off the fight because of him. I don't even know why he's here. You guys [the media] are the only fans he has. I'm the one people want to see."

Ed Soares then talked for Anderson saying he will handle his business on fight night.

Silva: "Everyone has their own way of promoting the fight. My job is to fight on August 7, not talk a bunch of crap about people."

Silva: "I'm not bored at this weight class. I like this weight division and I'm prepared to stay in this division. I want to retire fighting in this weight category."

Sonnen: "I don't know what hype means. Hype is BS, it's phony. I answer questions that you guys ask, that's it. I don't think that's hype. That's the fight business. We have to make people want to watch our fight. I could pull Anderson Silva out of his hotel room any night and beat the crap out of  him, but i made a commitment to wait until august 7 to do that."

Sonnen: "He's a scary fighter, I know he's gonna hurt me really bad. But I'm confident that I can deal with the pain and take the belt from him anyway."

Silva: "It's out of the question that I will fight at a catch weight. If you want to beat me up come make my weight class."

Silva: "Chael feels like he has to promote the fight. It's not the same way that I choose to promote the fight. I'm here doing my job training for August 7. I feel like what I've done in the past promotes the fight enough."

Silva on why he was so upset with what Demian Maia had to say before their fight and why's not upset with Sonnen. "It has nothing to do with Maia being Brazilian. I just don't feel like responding to Chael. We can settle this in the cage. People don't pay to hear people talk crap about each other, they pay to watch them fight."

Sonnen then sounds off with this: "He couldn't be any more wrong. Does he know anything about the business? People don't just want to watch people fight, they want to know why they are fighting. He thinks he's taking the high road. He is so clueless it's not even funny. The guy is a dummy. I can't wait to kick his ass."

Silva on what he does done differently in training for this fight as opposed to others, "I started training with Steven Segal."

Sonnen: "I don't think he's gonna be that easy to take down. I don't think anybody has ever outgrappled him. But I've fought 41 men and I've never been outstruck. I doubt we're gonna be the first to do either to each other. It's gonna be a real fight, something that he's not used to."

And with that comes the end to this truly epic conference call. Here's hoping that the fight on August 7 can live up to the, dare I say, hype.

UFC 118: Dan Miller vs John Salter booked with Phil Baroni hurt

Ba-da-dum, dum, dum, another one bites the dust ...

Phil Baroni has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2" fight against John Salter on Aug. 28 in Boston, Mass., suffering a minor injury to his collarbone.

MMAmania.com today confirmed that middleweight ironman, Dan Miller, has once again stepped up on short notice to fill an important void on the under card.

Miller is on an uncharacteristic three-fight skid, losing his most recent bout to Michael Bisping via unanimous decision at UFC 114: "Evans vs. Rampage" back in May. Before the fight, he felt that he'd be "done" if he didn't pick up an important win, but the promotion clearly sees promise in an impressive nine-fight winning streak not too long ago, including an undefeated (3-0) start inside the Octagon.

Miller, who has continued to march on despite major family problems -- his son is battling a potentially life-threatening illness -- has all the tools to become a major player in the middleweight division.

Hopefully, he can use this upcoming fight against Salter to remind fans of why the UFC decided to have him stick around.

Salter is of course coming off a technical knockout victory over Jason MacDonald earlier this month at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun 2" after MacDonald broke both his tibia and fibula in horrific fashion during the bout.

John dropped his Octagon debut to Gerald Harris at UFC Fight Night 20 via a hard-fought third round technical knockout. The up-and-comer was off to a perfect start (4-0) to his professional mixed martial arts career before the setback.

UFC 118 is set up to an absolute blockbuster card.

The three-headed monster will feature the rematch between Frankie Edgar and B.J. Penn for "The Answer's" lightweight title, a number one 155-pound contender bout in the form of Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, and of course, the highly anticipated heavyweight fight between James Toney and Randy Couture.

Demian Maia: 'I believe in Chael Sonnen'

Quoteworthy:

"I see Anderson with a higher percentage of chances to win but I also believe very much in Chael. I remember in his fight versus Nate Marquardt everyone told he was going to lose and I said he was dangerous. I guess he got chances this time. He takes down well and owns a good stand-up base and will go towards Anderson to put him down to score points and win by decision."

Former UFC middleweight number one contender Demian Maia has competed against both UFC 117 headliners Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. For Maia, "The Spider" has more chances to keep the belt but he doesn't discard Sonnen's ability to defeat the Brazilian using his wrestling skills to take him down and score sufficient points and possibly grounding and pounding his way to the title. Is Demian just bitter for what Silva did to him at UFC 112? Or is Chael really good enough to become the next champion?

UFC 117: Tim Boetsch vs Todd Brown set for Aug. 7 with Thiago Silva hurt

Mma_g_tsilva1_576_medium

Thiago Silva has been forced out of his UFC 117 fight with Tim Boetsch due to a back injury that was suffered during training.

Sherdog.com brings word of Silva's replacement for the fight, UFC newcomer Todd Brown.

Silva was last seen duking it out with "Sugar" Rashad Evans in the UFC 108 main event earlier this year. Despite having the former light heavyweight champion on rubber legs towards the end of the fight, the exhausted Brazilian could not capitalize and came up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision for just his second loss since joining the UFC in 2007.

Outside of Evans and current champion Lyoto Machida, Silva is 5-0 inside the Octagon, with TKO wins over Keith Jardine, Houston Alexander and James Irvin.

But the chance for Thiago to get back in the win column will have to wait for now. Instead, Todd Brown has been afforded an opportunity, albeit on short notice, to properly introduce himself to the fight world.

"Bulldog" will be carrying a 11-1 record into his UFC debut while riding an eight-fight unbeaten streak.

Bellator 25: Cole Konrad vs Rogent Lloret booked for Aug. 19 in Chicago

Konrad-llorent_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (July 27, 2010) - Two-time NCAA wrestling champion Cole Konrad and highly-touted European submission ace Rogent Lloret will face of in an opening-round contest in Bellator's Season 3 Heavyweight Tournament at the historic Chicago Theatre on Aug. 19th.

Konrad and Lloret join a stacked Bellator 25 card that also features the U.S. debut of undefeated heavyweight sensation Damian "The Polish Pitbull" Grabowski in another opening-round Heavyweight Tournament fight with massive Georgia-based ground-and-pound specialist Scott Barrett, and an opening-round fight in Bellator's Women's World Championship Tournament between Zoila "The Warrior Princess" Frausto and the world's No. 6-ranked flyweight, Jessica Pene, as well as five other fights.

Tickets for the event - which will also be broadcast LIVE nationwide on FOX Sports Net - are on sale now at ticketmaster.com.

"Cole is on one of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the world and Rogent's jiu-jitsu is at a similar level, so this should be a very intriguing fight," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "Add this fight to a card that already includes the U.S. debut of Damian Grabowski and a highly anticipated Women's Tournament fight between Zoila Frausto and Jessica Pene and you have the makings of a great fight night in Chicago ."

Konrad, a protégé and training partner of reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, will enter the Lloret fight looking to improve on the unblemished 4-0 record he has compiled since making his pro debut in January. Dubbed "The Polar Bear" by Lesnar due to his freakish strength during sparring sessions, the 6-foot, 5-inch Konrad's two most recent wins came during special "Feature Fights" at Bellator 17 and Bellator 22 in May and June. Previously, he won the NCAA Division I wrestling title at 285 lbs. in 2006 and 2007 while competing at the University of Minnesota and won a gold medal at the 2005 Pan-American Games.

"I think Lloret is going to be the toughest test I've faced in MMA up to this point in my fighting career," Konrad said. "I'm going to be looking to finish him as soon as possible. The goal for this tournament is to get in and get out. I'm looking to finish all of these fights as quickly as possible and get out of there."

Lloret, a Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and M-1 Global veteran has not lost a fight in more than three years and enters the tournament with a 9-1-1 overall pro record. He is known for his smothering ground game - submitting six of his nine victims, including four by arm triangle choke - but also displayed his striking prowess when he KO'd Serbian MMA veteran Miodrag Petkovic with a devastating high head kick this past April.

"I know that he is a good wrestler and he must be super strong too because he weighs way more than me - 22 pounds or more," Lloret said of Konrad. "The only thing I hope is that my background and my speed are a little on top and that I can keep the fight standing. We are both going to give the best we have and it will be a war."

Also competing in the Heavyweight Tournament alongside Konrad, Lloret, Barrett and Grabowski are Seattle-area knockout artist Mike "300" Hayes, heavy-handed UFC veteran Eddie Sanchez, power-punching British behemoth Neil "Goliath" Grove and one yet-to-be named fighter.

UFC 117 odds and betting lines for 'Silva vs Sonnen' on Aug. 7

UFC 117 odds

Preliminary odds and betting lines continue to shift for the upcoming UFC 117: "Silva vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view event from the Oracle Arena on Aug. 7 in Oakland, Calif., featuring a put-up-or-shut-up middleweight title fight between division champion Anderson Silva and number one contender Chael Sonnen.

After enjoying a bloated -700 line against Demian Maia at UFC 112, "The Spider" has lost some of his webbing, coming in at a more realistic -450 as the favorite against the mouthy ex-politician, Chael Sonnen, who currently stands as a +325 underdog.

That's Silva's closest line in the past few years, matching his -450 against Forrest Griffin at UFC 101.

Maybe it was his antics last April, or maybe Fedor Emelianenko's loss to Fabricio Werdum back on June 26 proved that no fighter is invincible -- including Silva. Keep that in mind if you want to try and make some money on Sonnen as the UFC heads to "The O."

Get 'em in early, and also check out the spread on some other combatants throwing hands at UFC 117, like Junior dos Santos (-350) vs. Roy Nelson (+250), by clicking here.

It might surprise you who the underdog is in a classic rivalry -- and what's the spread on Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch? I couldn't believe it either.

Shark Fights 13: Paul 'Semtex' Daley confirmed for Sept. 11 in Amarillo

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 06:05 AM PDT

Paulsemtexdaley2_medium

Amarillo, TX. - July 26, 2010- It was formally announced today that UFC veteran, Paul "Semtex" Daley, has signed a one-fight deal with Shark Fight Promotions, a fast-rising fight promotion company based out of Amarillo, Texas. It has been confirmed that Daley will fight on the Shark Fights 13 card in September. Daley's opponent is yet to be determined and will be announced in the coming weeks.

"Words cannot express how elated we are that Paul Daley has agreed to fight for our organization. Daley is arguably one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world." states Brent Medley, president of Shark Fight Promotions.

Medley went on to say, "We are currently in the process of choosing Daley's opponent. Several marquee fighters are being considered and a decision will be made very soon. This is shaping up to be an incredible card! Numerous A-list fighters have been confirmed for the Shark Fights 13 roster."

Paul Daley (24-9-2) recently defeated Daniel Acacio via submission at Impact FC 2 - The Uprising in Sydney, Australia, and was riding a four -fight win streak prior to his loss to Josh Koscheck at UFC 113. Daley has fought for many notable organizations throughout his career, including EliteXC, Strikeforce, Maximum Fighting Championship, Pancrase and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

He is also ranked #7 in the world in the welterweight division according to Sherdog.com. This will be Daley's first fight in the United States, following his highly publicized departure from the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Daley had this to say, "I'm very excited to be fighting in the U.S. again. Despite my conduct during the Koscheck fight, which I agree is inexcusable; fans in the United States have been very supportive. For that I am very grateful."

Daley goes on to say that he will do whatever it takes to make amends, "I can't undo what has already been done, but I'm determined to prove to everyone that the fighter they saw at UFC 113 is not who I am. I am better than that and the fans deserve better than that. I plan to do whatever it takes to earn back their respect and the respect of everyone in the industry. I'm genuinely looking forward to fighting back in the U.S., on what I feel is one of the most impressive fight cards that has been pulled together in quite some time."

Paul Daley is just one of many A-list competitors that have been confirmed for Shark Fights 13. The impressive roster includes Keith Jardine, Trevor Prangley, Rameau Sokoudjou, Houston Alexander, Drew McFedries and Joey Villasenor. Shark Fight Promotions will announce the full fight card and additional details about the event soon! To learn more about Shark Fight Promotions, please visit www.sharkfights.com.

Brian Stann: '90-percent of the fighters are off playing video games most the day'

Quoteworthy:

"I think it's impossible to focus 100-percent of my time on fighting. I think it would be a mistake if I did. No fighter does, trust me. I don’t care how hard they say they train. There are only so many hours they can actually physically train. I’d say 90-percent of the fighters are off playing video games most the day. Between practices they aren’t doing a lot of constructive things with their time. For me I’m just a busy body. I’m training 2, 3, 4 times a day and between those sessions I’m running this organization and doing other things. My mind needs to be occupied and it’s a good thing for me to have that relief and to have something else besides fighting because I think when a fighter only has that it actually becomes too stressful for him. They over-think the fight and they fight a little bit more stiff then they should."

UFC light heavyweight Brian Stann doesn't believe that a fighter can be successful inside the cage without having a life outside of it. "All American" keeps himself busy by volunteering for Hire Heroes USA while also training for his Aug. 1 fight against Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego. Will the former soldier take the hill at the San Diego Sports Arena? Or will Massenzio issue him a dishonorable discharge?
