Nate Marquardt vs Rousimar Palhares possible for upcoming UFC event in August

Posted: 04 May 2010 06:35 PM PDT

Marquardt-palhares_medium

Top ranked middleweight contender Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) could be facing a very stiff test this summer as he is currently in talks to face muscular submission master Rousimar Palhares (11-2) at either UFC 117 on Aug. 7 in Oakland or UFC 118 on Aug. 28 in Boston.

A source close to one of the fight camps alerted MMAmania.com to the potential match-up earlier today.

Marquardt was recently booked to take on the surging Alessio Sakara at UFC 116 on July 3; however, "Legionarius" was forced to withdraw earlier this week because of the death of his father.

"The Great" is coming off a fairly one-sided beat down at the hands of now number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 109. Many people pegged the fight as an easy win for Marquardt, but Mr. Sonnen showed us all yet again what good 'ole American wrestling can do for you in this sport.

Prior to the Sonnen defeat, Nate had won three consecutive fights inside the Octagon, including a 21-second dismantling of Demian Maia at UFC 102. That win propelled Marquardt back to the top of the division, but another title shot was just not meant to be at the moment.

Palhares is coming off a controversial submission win over Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111 back on March 27, failing to break the heel hook submission he applied in the first round in a timely fashion. The "Gorilla" tapped to no avail and referee Kevin Mulhall had to physically intervene upon calling the fight.

"Toquinho" later apologized for the hiccup, insisting there was no harm intended, but the NJSACB wasn't impressed with his post-fight apology and slapped him with a 90-day suspension.

He'll now look to redeem himself against perhaps his stiffest test to date (sans Dan Henderson) later this summer.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this showdown as it becomes available.

Dana White: 'I literally require no sleep'

Quoteworthy:

"[My wife] doesn’t bust my balls at all. Not one bit, believe me when I tell you. I have a lot of all-night blackjack sessions. I have nights where I’ll fucking come home and I’m like, ‘Holy shit. The kids are gonna be up in two hours.’ So I get two hours sleep and then get up and take them to school and then go to work. But blackjack is my thing. I like to do it... The thing about me is . . . I literally require no sleep. I can go to sleep for two hours, three hours, and I get up and can kill it."

UFC President Dana White reveals the secret to his success: An understanding wife who doesn't give him grief for his jet set lifestyle and an ability to stay awake at virtually all hours. It appears to be a winning formula -- He runs the most successful mixed martial arts promotion on the planet and likely has an eight-figure balance (if not more) in his bank account for all his grueling work. And what better way to spend all that hard-earned cash than at the black jack tables in your best friend's casino? I wouldn't sleep much, either.

UFC 116: 'Lesnar vs Carwin' official for Las Vegas on July 3

Get yer' bottle rockets ready because this Fourth of July weekend is going to be popping with mixed martial arts fireworks.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today officially announced the titanic heavyweight showdown between division champion Brock Lesnar and interim titlist Shane Carwin that will headline the monster pay-per-view (PPV) event, which is scheduled for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 3.

UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" features a main event that was supposed to take place in Nov. 2009. However, Lesnar was stricken with a serious stomach ailment prior to the super-sized showdown, sending him to the hospital for an extended period of time and nearly killing his budding fight career.

But a "miracle" that defied modern medicine somehow rescued the former NCAA wrestling champion. And he's been on the road to recovery ever since, adopting a a new diet, training camp and attitude.

How the experience, as well as his renewed approach to the sport and wellness, affects his performance inside the Octagon remains to be seen.

Carwin, meanwhile, just returned from a lengthy absence to smash former champion Frank Mir at UFC 111 in March to solidify his place in line as potential heir to the throne.

"The Engineer" put on a frightening display of power at the Prudential Center. And afterward, Lesnar was kind enough to meet him in the cage after his victory and take potshots at his newly earned interim title, but Carwin wouldn't get dragged into a war of words.

He's likely saving his talking for the fight -- and if the Mir bout was any indication -- he'll have a lot to say ... with his very own ham hocks.

UFC 116 will also feature a middleweight showdown between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama, as well as a highly-anticipated rematch between Stephan Bonnar and Krzysztof Soszynski.

UFC 114: Jason Brilz vs Antonio Rogerio Nogueira booked for May 29 with Forrest Griffin hurt

Brilz-nog_medium

Jason Brilz today was awarded the opportunity to make an immediate impact in the light heavyweight division as the decorated amateur wrestler willstep up on short notice to fight Pride FC import Antonio Rogerio Nogueria in the at UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans" on May 29 in Las Vegas.

Nogueira's oriiginal opponent, Forrest Griffin, was forced to withdraw from the event due to a shoulder injur. As "Lil' Nog" tells Tatame.com, there isn't much he can do about the last-minute switch except refine his strategy:

"What can I do? I want to fight him standing up and then fall onto the ground and try to finish him. It switched from a striker to a wrestler but I'll still be searching for the knockout"

The twin brother of UFC heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira punched a one-way ticket on the train to title contention with a first round destruction of Luis Arthur Cane at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2" in November 2009.

The victory over "Banha" was the sixth straight for the former Brazilian boxer, who also convincingly finished five of those six contests.

Brilz will certainly have his work cut out for him.

The Nebraska-based fighter has compiled an impressive 18-2-1 record and has notable wins over veterans such as Jason MacDonald, Alex Schoenauer and Tim Boetsch, among others.

His last appearance inside the Octagon was as recent as UFC on Versus 1, where he took home a unanimous decision win against Eric Schafer in Broomfield.

UFC 114 will run in conjunction with this year's Fan Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and feature a 205-pound grudge match between former light heavyweight champions and Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 coaches "Sugar" Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

MMA Quick Quote: Alistair Overeem says Fedor's management knows what he's capable of, they know he's a threat

Posted: 04 May 2010 12:32 PM PDT

Mma_overeem_576_medium

"I'm a MMA fighter first, that's my passion. K-1 is a challenge. Fans wanted to see me in the Grand Prix and K-1 made me a very good offer. But the United States is my priority in 2010. I want to fight over here a couple more times this year... Of course I want to fight Fedor. I've been wanting to fight him for a long time. I know he's just a fighter and doesn't really choose his fights. Whether it's his management or not, they don't want a fight with me. They see me as a threat. They know what I'm capable of. But I'm the champ here, and it's time to defend my title. So Brett got the chance and it will be an interesting fight... I'm not in this to shut people up. People can say what they want. It's my job, I get paid for this. Fans aren't my boss, I don't care what they have to say. I fight for me."

On today's Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" media call with Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem, much of the attention was unsurprisingly centered around Fedor Emelianenko, and not the looming title bout between "The Demolition Man" and "The Grim" on May 15. Never one to mince his words, Overeem was happy to answer questions about the speculation of why a fight with Fedor has yet to materialize. Alistair also claimed that now that's he's finally fighting in the United States and defending his title, his plans are squarely focused on being more active on American soil this year. And for all you haters out there, Overeem says go ahead and keep talking, because he ain't listening. Any Maniacs care to chime in on these priceless quotes?

UFC 118: Joe Lauzon vs Terry Etim in the works for Aug. 28 in Boston

Lauzon-etim_medium

There's a fantastic lightweight match-up brewing between 155-pound up-and-comers Joe Lauzon (18-5) and Terry Etim (14-3), currently planned for UFC 118 on August 28 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sources from inside one of the fight camps alerted MMAmania.com to the pending bout earlier today.

Lauzon came up empty against the resurgent Sam Stout at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" back on January 8. It was only the second loss for the former Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 contestant since his stunning debut under the Zuffa banner against Jens Pulver way back in September 2006.

"J-Lau" has been training with BJ Penn in Hawaii and will need to be at 100-percent to overcome the hard-hitting Etim.

The Brit had quietly assembled a four-fight winning streak starting with a unanimous decision victory over Sam Stout at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben;" however, Rafael dos Anjos put an end to his winning ways with a textbook armbar submission at last month's UFC 112: "Invincible" pay-per-view in Abu Dhabi.

He'll need to concentrate on submission defense for a second straight bout if he hopes to deny Lauzon the win.

UFC 118 is expected to feature a lightweight bout between current 155-pound contenders Kenny "KenFlo" Florian and Gray "The Bully" Maynard as they try to stake their claim to the winner of a possible championship rematch between Frankie "The Answer" Edgar and BJ "The Prodigy" Penn, also expected on the Aug. 28 card.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to the UFC's debut in Boston as they become available.

Polish trainer: Offense? Defense? Jab? Mariusz Pudzianowski is just 'Bad'

"His boxing technique is bad. There a lot of holes in his game. His defense is weak, he didn't have much time to learn. There are holes in every aspect of his boxing technique. His jab is bad, his legs are bad, his defense is bad, his offense is bad. I also don't think Mariusz is ready to take a punch."

Boxing trainer Krzysztof Kosedowski offers an unflattering assessment of stand-up skills for five-time World's Strongest Man, Mariusz Pudzianowski, who faces former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia at the upcoming Moosin: "Gods of Martial Arts" event on May 21 in Worcester. The Polish powerhouse may not have to rely on his hands if he can use his brute strength to get "The Maine-iac" to the ground and pound on him. Is he in for a rude awakening? Or can he make something of himself in MMA with just his muscles and his mouth? We may have a definitive answer by the end of this month. What's your take?

Fedor Emelianenko vs Fabricio Werdum official for Strikeforce on June 26 in San Jose

Posted: 04 May 2010 08:53 AM PDT

Fedor-werdum_medium
It's official (finally).

After weeks of "negotiating" between Strikeforce and M-1 Global, WAMMA heavyweight champion and marquee attraction Fedor Emelianenko (31-1) will finally make his Showtime debut on June 26 when he welcomes a challenge from Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

"The Last Emperor" made his promotion debut in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, taking a very game Brett Rogers into the second round before finishing him with a "Grim" overhand right that sent the former tire mechanic into the shop for repairs.

Emelianenko suffered a hand injury during the CBS televised fight and was sidelined for several weeks; however, the former PRIDE FC heavyweight champion is rested, healthy and ready to return, as he indicated earlier today on his Team Fedor blog.

Today I am happy to announce that I am going to fight Fabricio Werdum at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, California on the 26th of June! The fight will be live on Showtime. I finally have a chance to stand across the cage from the man who beat my brother, and to make that loss right.

And as "Vai Cavalo" will tell you, good things come to those who wait.

Werdum was already calling out the Russian Sambo champion after his Nov. 7 decision win over Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, also on CBS.

The Brazilian submission specialist has notched two wins under the Strikeforce banner since debuting for the San Jose-based promotion at "Carano vs Cyborg" back in August 2009.

Werdum's ultimate goal is to hold the division title and a win over Emelianenko will surely guarantee him the winner of Alistair Overeem vs. Brett Rogers, who collide at "Heavy Artillery" on May 15.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on the upcoming Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" Showtime event as they develop.

Jim Miller vs Gleison Tibau possible for UFC event in Fall 2010

Posted: 04 May 2010 07:56 AM PDT

Miller-tibau_medium

A lightweight battle in the form of Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau is in the works for an upcoming UFC event in late summer/early fall at an event and venue to be named, according to a May 3 report from MMA Die Hards.

Miller will be coming into this contest riding an impressive four-fight win streak after suffering his only loss inside the Octagon to Gray Maynard at UFC 96. During that time Miller has knocked off Mac Danzig, Steve Lopez, Duane Ludwig, and most recently Mark Bocek at UFC 111.

Carrying a record of 17-2 with his only losses coming to the aforementioned Maynard and to current UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, a win against Tibau could vault Miller into the upper echelon of the 155 pound division.

Gleison (21-6), fighting out of American Top Team, has reeled off back-to-back wins against Josh Neer at UFC 104 and against Caol Uno at UFC Fight Night 21: "Florian vs. Gomi," and has won four of his last five fights with his only loss coming to Melvin Guillard at The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale last summer.

Prior to his most recent string of success, Tibau struggled competing with some of the tops guys in the division losing to Tyson Griffin at UFC 81 and Joe Stevenson at UFC 86.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for a future announcement regarding the date and venue for this 155-pound match-up.

Manny Gamburyan: It doesn't make sense for me to fight anyone other than Jose Aldo

Quoteworthy:

"Right now I'm not thinking about anything else. My eye is right on him. That's the only guy I really want to fight right now. It doesn't make sense to fight anybody else. Even if they offered me Nate Diaz, that wouldn't make sense to me. The next fight should be Jose Aldo. I'm going to have a good game plan. I'll talk to my coaches and train hard and train a smart way. It's going to be a big, huge puzzle. That's for sure. He's a phenom. He's a great fighter, a great athlete. If anybody fights Jose Aldo, you can't be scared of him. I won't be scared, I promise you. When I walk into the cage, I'm going to look in his eyes and I'm going to say, ‘I'm going to take the belt from you.'"

Fresh off his WEC 48 upset win over former featherweight champion Mike Brown, Manny Gamburyan sets his sights on division title holder Jose Aldo, who also competed on the April 24, defeating former 145-pound kingpin Urijah Faber. There has been a lot of talk about "Junior" switching weight classes but "Manvil" doesn't want him going anywhere just yet. Any Maniacs out there think he's biting off more than he can chew?
