Bellator 17 recap and post-fight discussion for May 6 Boston event

Posted: 06 May 2010 07:16 PM PDT

Bellator17recap_medium

Bellator 17 from the Wang City Theatre in Boston Massachusetts, has come to a close.

Capping off the televised portion of the card was blue-chip prospect and heavyweight up-and-comer Cole Konrad, who's being billed as the future of the 265-pound division.

If Cole Konrad is the future, then call me Marty McFly because I'm heading back to the past.

They announced him as one of the heavy hitters coming from the Brock Lesnar camp, which did nothing but remind me of how special Lesnar is as an athlete. That's not to take away from Konrad's wrestling accomplishments, but he was gassed after one round of action.

And he had the physique to prove it.

Bennett was mugged for the first five minutes but remained upright for the duration of the fight. He picked his shots and seemed to get the better of what little striking there was, but the judges saw differently. Konrad remains undefeated at 2-0, but still has a long way to go.

Eddie Alvarez and Josh Neer were paired up in what was advertised as a "super fight." What wasn't so super was Neer's complete disregard for the takedown, which has become an all too common theme in the upper echelon of mixed martial arts competitors.

Neer was more than game and put Alvarez on notice with a couple of combinations; however, the champion didn't get his belt (or a consensus top ten ranking) by getting into reckless brawls.

Alvarez had the takedown anytime he wanted it and used his significant strength advantage to ground and pound "The Dentist" back into the waiting room. Up next for Alvarez is the winner of Pat Curran vs. Toby Imada.

Up next for Neer? More of the same if he doesn't change his game.

Former UFC competitor and highly regarded lightweight veteran Roger Huerta signed with Bellator Fighting Championships to quite a bit of fanfare and very high expectations.

Pat Curran must have been a Snap! fan, because he didn't believe the hype.

The Lil' Frog came out with a very calculated attack that kept "El Matador" on the defense throughout most of rounds one and two. Huerta was effective when he picked his spots, unfortunately they were too few and far between for the ringside judges, who advance Curran to the lightweight finals against Toby Imada.

Sorry, Telemundo.

Toby Imada made a name for himself at last year's Bellator tournament with his inverted triangle choke over Jorge Masvidal. While he won't be setting any YouTube records in Season 2, there is no denying that his submission skills are enough to carry him to the finals (again).

Just ask Carey Vanier.

The wrestler came out with quick, crisp hands that kept Imada at a distance early on. Vanier also managed to scurry out of submission danger throughout most of round one.

Unfortunately for the Greg Jackson disciple, it was just a matter of time for Imada, who used a late scramble in the final minutes of the second frame to lock up a loose limb and crank it. Vanier taps, and Imada moves on to face Pat Curran for all the marbles.

That's a wrap from Boston.

Anyone watching the televised presentation of Bellator 17 that saw things differently? Who impressed you the most? Imada? Alvarez? Curran?

Let's hear your take, Maniacs.

Now without further adieu, Bellator 17 live results after the jump.

BELLATOR 17 PLAY-BY-PLAY LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
Nostradumbass here live in "Bean Town."

160 lbs.: Eddie Alvarez vs. Josh Neer

Round one: Crowd pro-Alvarez. They come out throwing hard and Alvarez scores a huge takedown. Neer doing a good job of defending with his legs as Alvarez looks to posture up. Miragliotta warns him for fence-grabbing. Alvarez using his strength advantage to ground and pound him but Neer survives and reverses. They get back to their feet and Alvarez again scores a big takedown. Neer mounted again and pounded on until the bell.

Round two: Leg kicks by Neer but Alvarez goes right to the takedown since Neer has obviously neglected to learn from his past losses. He does manage to get to his feet and but Alvarez continues to abuse his lack of takedown defense. Neer gives up his back in the scramble and Alvarez locks in the rear naked choke. Nothing "super" about this fight.

Final result: Eddie Alvarez def. Josh Neer via submission (rear naked choke) 2:08 R2

265 lbs.: Pat Bennett vs. Cole Konrad

Round one: Bennett opens up with his hands but Konrad uses his momentum to lock up a big takedown. Not much happening here, Konrad hits the body a few times. He postures but Bennett is keeping him tangled up. Konrad drags him to the center of the cage and uses his weight to keep Bennett pinned. He rattles off some ground and pound until the bell.

Round two: Konrad bumrushes him to the fence and Bennett escapes. Both fighters sucking wind. Ah, the joys of heavyweight. Nothing is happening. The referee claps his hands and they ignore him. Konrad rushes in for the takedown and Bennett denies him. They swing wildly from ten feet away and (surprise) hit nothing. Konrad can't keep his hands up he's so gassed. He tags him with a right and the crowd boos. After a minute of huffing and puffing he hits him again. Crowd not happy. Round over.

Round three: Bennett lands a clean kick and a right hand and the crowd gives him a Bronx cheer. More wind sucking and Konrad bumrushes. He can't get the takedown and eats a few on the break away. No action as they catch their breath. Right hand lands for Bennett. They stall. Crowd furious. Low kick for Bennett. Sloppy striking ends the fight. Reprehensible display.

Final result: Cole Konrad defeats Pat Bennett via unanimous decision (30-26, 29-28, 30-27)

155 lbs.: Roger Huerta vs. Pat Curran

Round one: Leg kicks from both men start us off. Nothing happens for a minute. Huge body kick lands for Curran. Inside leg kick for Huerta. Slow pace so far. Another hard body kick for Curran. Again. Huerta head kick gets nothing. Body kick for Huerta who can't get the shoot. They clinch and go to the cage. Huerta drops a level and knees the thigh. Nice knee to the body lands for each fighter. They break away and trade kicks until the round ends.

Round two: Quick clinch and knees are flying. They separate. Head kick from Huerta blocked. Low kick isn't. Curran stalking. Huerta busy with low kicks. Huerta 1-2 backs Curran up. Now Huerta stalking. Overhand right lands for Curran who tries for the take down but Huerta gets out of it. They unload on each other and the crowd roars. Then they stop and so does the crowd. Huerta presses him to the cage and can't get the takedown. He knees the thighs again. Curran pushes him off and rushes in with a Superman punch at the bell.

Round three: Both fighters sense urgency and strike early and often. They clinch and Huerta working over the thighs. They separate and Curran lands a head kick then stuffs a takedown. Curran lets the hands go. Huerta is game. Huerta with a takedown. He softens him up then Curran escapes and reverses. Huerta to his feet and they separate. Another clinch. Curran with a takedown. Huerta up. Curran landing cleanly. Huerta answers but seems to be getting beat to the punch. They throw leather to the bell. Slow start, great finish.

Final result: Pat Curran def. Roger Huerta via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

155 lbs.: Carey Vanier vs. Toby Imada

Round one: Vanier finds his range early. Imada wants the ground and gets it -- but ends up on his back. Imada gets to his feet without damage. Vanier whiffs and Imada goes for the shoot but again gets muscled to his back. Imada with a lightning fast leg lock but Vanier rolls out of danger and reclaims mount. Camera man's prodigious posterior blocks Nostradumbass view. Imada is on his feet, lands a left and they clinch. Greco slam by Vanier but Imada gets right back up. Imada with the Thai Plum. Vanier now shoots and pushes him to the cage. Imada with knees. Imada takes a knee to the little Toby's and doesn't blink. He tags Vanier with a left and then rocks him at the bell. Close round.

Round two: Vanier opens with a shoot but Imada defends. Both men strike cautiously with no real damage being done. Imada stalking now. Imada unloads and Vanier scoots out of danger. Imada kicks but Vanier catches it -- and Imada uses the momentum to roll him into a leg lock. Vanier escapes and in the scramble gets rolled over. Imada sets him up and locks in a TIGHT armbar. Vanier struggles valiantly but has nowhere to go but Tapsville.

Final result: Toby Imada def. Carey Vanier via submission (armbar) 3:33 R2

MFC 25 weigh-in results for 'Vindication' event on May 7

Posted: 06 May 2010 12:55 PM PDT

Mfc25_medium

The official weigh-in event for MFC 25: "Vindication" has wrapped up from the City Centre Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Seventeen of the 18 fighters set to compete at the Northlands Expo Centre tomorrow night (May 7) made their respective weights without much of a problem.

However, the one fighter who missed his mark might come as somewhat of a surprise.

Ten-fight UFC veteran Wilson Gouveia wasn't expected to have any difficult making the 206-pound limit for his light heavyweight battle against Ryan Jimmo, considering the American Top Team member's last five fights have all been contested in the 185-pound middleweight division.

That wasn't the case though. Gouveia tipped the scale at 207.9 pounds -- almost two pounds over the limit. The Brazilian will have to forfeit a quarter of his payday and the fight will go on as expected.

MFC 25 will feature a 185-pound middleweight scrap between UFC castoffs Thales Leites and Jesse Taylor as its main event. Fellow ex-UFC stars Luigi Fiorivanti, Pete Spratt, Richie Hightower and Gouveia will also be in action tomorrow night.

Complete "Vindication" weigh-in results after the jump.

Main Event:

185 lbs.: Thales Leites (185.6) vs. Jesse Taylor (184.6)

Main Card (HDNet):

205 lbs: Wilson Gouveia (207.9) vs. Ryan Jimmo (205.1)

170 lbs: Pete Spratt (169.6) vs. Luigi Fioravanti (170.6)

205 lbs: Emanuel Newton (205) vs. Dwayne Lewis (204.4)

155 lbs: Richie Hightower (156) vs. Gavin Neil (154.3)

Preliminary Card:

265 lbs: Chase Gormley (264.5) vs. Ryan Fortin (263.1)

170 lbs: Chad Freeman (170.2) vs. Mike Froese (169.8)

170 lbs: Aaron Berke (168.8) vs. Keto Allen (168.5)

155 lbs: Garret Nybakken (155.8) vs. Jevon Marshall (154)

It's going to be a fun night of fights so don't miss it. And remember to check us out for a recap of the festivities shortly after the event has wrapped up from Edmonton tomorrow night.

UFC on Versus 2: James Irvin vs Igor Pokrajac set for Salt Lake City

Posted: 06 May 2010 12:24 PM PDT

James-irvin2_medium

It's one and done for James Irvin at middleweight.

After dropping down to 185 to take on Alessio Sakara at UFC on Versus 1 in which "The Sandman" looked like a shell of his former self, Irvin has rethought his career path and moved back up to light heavyweight.

The match up between Irvin and Igor Pokrajac was confirmed by MMA Weekly earlier today.

Prior to his loss against Sakara back in March, James had battled numerous injuries, a suspension due to drug use, and a self-admitted addiction to prescription pain medicine keeping him out of action for nearly two years.

Having gone just 2-3 in his last five contests, Irvin is hoping a move back to his natural weight class can rejuvenate his MMA career.

Pokrajac (21-7) will be looking to get his first win inside the Octagon when he takes on Irvin in August.

The Croation wrestler made his debut at UFC 103 where he lost a unanimous decision to Vladimir Matyushenko. At UFC 110 earlier this year, Igor was finished by James Te-Huna via technical knockout due to strikes in the final frame.

The 31-year old will need a win here or he could be looking at strike three.

UFC on Versus 2 is expected to feature contests between Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko as well as Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson.

Winner of Paul Daley vs Josh Koscheck at UFC 113 will get shot at Georges St. Pierre's title

What was widely figured to be the welterweight number one contender bout has now been made official.

The winner of the UFC 113 co-main event fight between Paul Daley and Josh Koscheck will be next in line to battle Georges St. Pierre for his welterweight crown. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news during today's press conference in Montreal.

Daley is as confident as they come and the heavy-handed welterweight striker has been able to back it up with two lethal performances since making his promotional debut.

He torched the title hopes of Martin Kampmann with a first round technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" and then brutalized grappling whiz Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" with a crushing knockout in hos most recent performance.

Koscheck, meanwhile, has been recovering for an injury that forced him out of a planned rematch against Paulo Thiago at UFC 109: "Relentless" next month.

He has gone on to score two impressive wins since the surprise loss to the Brazilian, stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" back in September and then choking out Anthony Johnson just last month at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2."

He called you too? Yeah, I figured I wasn't getting any "special" treatment.

If you attended the first ever UFC Fan Expo last July coinciding with UFC 100, then you have received, or will soon be receiving, a phone call from none other than Dana White himself.

With this "robo-call," D.W. and the UFC have embarked on an ambitious telephone marketing campaign contacting fans who attended the inagural UFC Fan Expo and encouraging them to purchase tickets to the encore event, scheduled for May 28-29 from the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The expo is running in conjucntion with UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans."

The two-day fan exposition of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) activities includes meet and greets with legendary UFC and WEC fighters, MMA demonstrations, fan-inspired special events, training and development sessions as well as other combat related opportunities and entertainment.

And don't delay, a second ring from White is not something you want.

Vitor Belfort: 'Chael Sonnen will be a great challenge for Anderson Silva at UFC 117'

Quoteworthy:

"Each fight is different; I can't say how it is going to be. For sure Sonnen will be a great challenge, and I'm pretty sure the fight will be tied. They are two good fighters, now it is up to us to wait... I, for sure, will be one [a challenge for Silva] too. For now, I'll just wait for my chance and make it worth it. They [doctors] said I could work on my fitness, I'm almost released to train. I'll be ready in September."

The man who was originally tapped to take on UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 112, Vitor Belfort, shared his thoughts on the upcoming title bout between Silva and Chael Sonnen. "The Phenom" appears to think Sonnen has a more than decent chance to dethrone the champ, but is also counting down the days until he'll be ready to return to the Octagon following shoulder surgery. So, simple question for you. Who has the better chance, if either of them, to beat "The Spider," Sonnen or Belfort? And, go...

UFC 118: Nick Osipczak vs Greg Soto signed for Boston on August 28

Posted: 06 May 2010 09:15 AM PDT

Picture_1_medium

A welterweight match up between Nick Osipczak and Greg Soto has been signed for UFC 118, which is set to take place on August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Soto tweeted the news yesterday.

Osipczak, a semi-finalist on The Ultimate Fighter 9, has gone 2-1 in the UFC since leaving the TUF house. Nick defeated fellow TUF 9 competitor Frank Lester at The Ultimate Fight 9 Finale and finished the rugged Matt Riddle via technical knockout in the third round of their bout at UFC 105: "Couture vs. Vera" last November.

The Team Rough House product will be looking to run his overall record to 6-1 with a win over Soto this August.

Greg Soto, a Team Pellegrino fighter, made his UFC debut earlier this year at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" where he was disqualified due to an illegal upkick against the aforementioned Riddle.

The New York native and New Jersey State Police officer in training had been undefeated, going 7-0, prior to that loss.

UFC 118 is shaping up to be a sick (insert Boston accent here) card. Expected to be headlined by a rematch for the lightweight title between B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar, UFC's Boston debut will also feature Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard and Randy Couture vs. James Toney.

MMAmania.com will have more news on UFC 118 as it breaks.

"The preparation for every fight is the same, it's intense. I peak to the highest level of my performance a week before the fight. I'm ready for it. I hope [Mitrione's] biggest strength would be his ground game because if he wants to stand and bang, that's my world. If I see a submission and he slip -- I'll grip. I don't predict the fights but I'm not getting knocked out, I'll tell you that."

Former Elite XC headliner, YouTube brawler and now Ultimate Fighter contestant Kimbo Slice, looks to notch consecutive wins under the Zuffa banner when he tangles with fellow TUF 10 cast mate Matt Mitrione at UFC 113 on May 8 from the Bell Centre in Montreal. Kimbo was stopped by Roy Nelson on the Spike TV reality show but kept himself employed with a unanimous decision win over Houston Alexander at the Dec. 5 Finale. Can he survive the heavy hands of the former Minnesota Viking? Or will "Meathead" find out just how far Slice has improved his ground game? What's your take Maniacs?

MMA Quick Quote: Josh Neer knows he can beat Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 17

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:31 AM PDT

Josh_20neer_2001_medium

"Eddie's style is a great match up for me. I always match up well with technical fighters, and from the footage I have seen on Eddie, he is a real technical fighter. He doesn't back down, and this is the thing I love about this fight. He is always coming forward, and he never takes a step backward. I am used to being the one moving forward and having to chase everyone around. In this fight we are going to clash right in the middle of the cage. I am not going to back down, I am not going to want to go backward. I am going to want to go forward, and from what I have seen from Eddie, he wants to move forward, and he wants to be the aggressor. That first sequence in the fight, the first trade is going to be key. I look at this fight in particular as I have a huge opportunity to upset a guy, and I definitely am capable of beating him. I love coming into fights as the underdog because there is no pressure. There is no doubt in my mind that I can beat Eddie. I am going in there to win, not to collect a paycheck. I am going in there to win the fight and that is how I approach every fight."

Former UFC lightweight Josh Neer spoke to MMAmania.com about his fight with top-five ranked lightweight Eddie Alvarez at Bellator 17 on Thursday, May 6. "The Dentist" and Alvarez will be the first combatants in Bellator's string of "super fights" during the promotion's second season. And after just being released by the UFC last year, Neer is fully aware of the great chance to make a statement that awaits him. So who do we like in this match up? Will Eddie be too much for Josh to handle, or will Neer pull of the surprising upset? Opinions please.
