Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua: 'I saw Machida dazed and took the opportunity to knock him out'

Quoteworthy:

"I'm very happy, this belt is my big dream! This is my life. I trained hard every day for this. I saw that (Machida) got dazed and was about to go down so I took the opportunity to knock him out. Everything that happened [after UFC 104] just gave me more motivation to win this belt. "

Newly crowned Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua is ecstatic after knocking out the previously undefeated Lyoto Machida to usurp the 205-pound throne. "Shogun" came up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision at their first encounter last October, but had no intentions of letting the judges have their say in the rematch. After knocking out "The Dragon," the entire UFC light heavyweight division is going to be lining up. Could a Shogun vs. Rampage rematch be in the works? Only if "B.A. Baracus" holds up his end of the bargain against Rashad Evans at UFC 114.

Following his submission loss to "The Talent," Cote called the move "illegal." Where do you stand on these types of offensive moves in a mixed martial arts bout?

Dana White: 'Paul Daley will never fight in the UFC again'

Quoteworthy:

"He's done. I don't give a s--t if he's the best 170-pounder in the world. He'll never come back here again. I'm probably the most lenient guy in sports. And this is probably one of the most lenient organizations. We're all human, we all mistakes, things happen. There's no excuse for that. These guys are professional athletes. You don't ever hit a guy blatantly after the bell like that whether you're frustrated or not. It was probably one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. I don't care if he fights in every show all over the world and becomes the best and everybody thinks he's the pound-for-pound best in the world. He will never fight in the UFC ever again."

UFC President Dana White ends what could have been a promising Octagon career for Paul Daley, after the trash talking Brit took a swipe at UFC 113 opponent Josh Koscheck after the bell at last night's "Machida vs. Shogun II" event at the Bell Centre in Montreal. "Kos" utilized his wrestling to outpoint "Semtex" en route to a unanimous decision victory and a spot opposite Georges St. Pierre on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 12) this September. Anyone think the punishment doesn't fit the crime? Or did Daley get what he deserved?

UFC 113 bonuses and awards for 'Machida vs Shogun II' PPV fights

UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $65,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it may not surprise you which combatants are leaving the "The 5-1-4" with a little extra green.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded lightweight competitors Jeremy Stephens and Sam Stout "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling three rounds of wall-to-wall action.

The "Lil' Heathen" threw his own "Hands of Stone," earning the split decision victory and taking home a nice fat check for 65k -- the same check that may ease the pain of losing for Stout.

Representing the 185-pound weight class was the resurgent Alan Belcher. "The Talent" shrugged off an aggressive Patrick Cote with a brutal pile-driver that set up a rear naked choke win and a windfall of cash for his slick "Submission of the Night."

Also bringing home the proverbial bacon was new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua. "Shogun" pulled the trigger on Saturday night, turning Lyoto Machida inside-out to grab "Knockout of the Night" after making his fellow Brazilian go stiff in the opening frame.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 113:

Fight of the Night — Jeremy Stephens vs. Sam Stout
Submission of the Night — Alan Belcher
Knockout of the Night — Mauricio Rua

Again, each fighter received $65,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC 113 results recap for 'Machida vs Shogun 2'

Ufc113recap_medium

UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun 2" tonight (Sat., May 8) blew the roof off the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Not even a "Habs" loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins could derail the massive crowd from going absolutely bananas all night long.

In the main event of the evening, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida was out to prove that his controversial unanimous decision win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in Oct. 2009 was no mistake.

Apparently, it was.

Shogun came out aggressive early, as usual, and stunned the Brazilian with a punch to the top of the head in round one. Machida fell and Shogun smelled the chum in the water, finishing him with a mix of punches that had "The Dragon" out cold on the canvas.

It was the first loss ever for the seemingly indestructible and elusive Machida and a massive performance from the Pride FC star. Shogun is back, folks, but was he ever really gone?

Don't think so.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua ... your new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Get used to the sound of that.

Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley talked up one helluva co main event welterweight showdown. And when Dana White threw down the gauntlet with a spot on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 and a shot at division champion Georges St. Pierre just a day before the fight, it added more fuel to the fire.

Too bad the fuse fizzled.

Koscheck went back to his wrestling roots and rode the takedown-prone British brawler en route to a dominating unanimous decision. It wasn't pretty, and the crowd let them know it throughout the 15-minute fight, but Koscheck was completely in control at every turn.

Even a controversial phantom illegal knee from "Semtex" in the first round for which referee Dan Miragliotta docked him a point, and then magically took back after watching the replay, couldn't stop the American Kickboxing Academy standout from getting a huge win.

Daley, clearly frustrated at the end of the bout, threw a left hook way after the final bell that Koscheck was able to partially defend. Horrible sportsmanship for sure, which will likely hurt his chances of getting back to the top of the 170-pound ladder in the future sooner rather than later.

And that's a good thing ... he needs to grow up.

Lightweights Jeremy Stephens and Sam Stout next touched 'em up in what was billed as a strikefest.

It didn't disappoint.

Stephens, the power puncher, came out aggressive early against the much more technical kickboxer. And sans a body shot that sent him south in the third and final round, it appeared to win over the judges sitting ringside.

But it certainly didn't appear to be so clear-cut -- Stout had his moments.

He just got stung way too many times with big punches. In fact, his face was so swollen and battered after 15 minutes that it looked like he was about to go into anaphylactic shock because of too many bee stings.

That's never a barometer of success inside the Octagon, but in this case, it was certainly telling of the final result.

YouTube sensation Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson made his long-awaited PPV debut against his The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) castmate and NFL wash up, Matt Mitrione.

Slice, a former Miami street brawler, was out to prove that he was an evolving mixed marital artist. Unfortunately for the Bahamian brawler, tonight he was completely shut down.

Despite a few powerful takedowns in round one, "Meathead" proved tonight that the former Elite XC posterboy still has a long was to go.

Mitrione chopped down Kimbo with leg kicks, as well as mixed in some impressive submission attempts, en route to a second round technical knockout finish.

He wasn't battering Kimbo to oblivion, but he poured it on so thick toward the end of the second frame that the referee has no choice but to call a halt to the action. Kimbo didn't appear to mind the stoppage, taking his time to recover and get to his feet when all was said and done.

Mitrione is no world beater, but he definitely outclassed Kimbo tonight, calling into question whether or not he really is cut out for the big show.

Time will tell -- Kimbo is officially on the clock.

In the opening fight of the night, middleweight strikers Alan Belcher took on hometown favorite Patrick Cote, who was returning after two major knee surgeries since a technical knockout loss to division champion Anderson Silva in Oct. 2008.

And as most expected, it wasn't much of a ground battle until "The Talent" pile-drived "The Predator" in round two and cinched-in a lightening-fast rear naked choke on a stunned Cote.

Cote had no other option but to nap or tap, choosing the latter rather than going unconscious. He immediately protested the Hulk Hogan-esque (and illegal) maneuver, but replays showed that Cote landed face-first on the mat.

Belcher, once again, immediately called out "The Spider" in his post-fight remarks. And at this point, I wouldn't mind seeing the promotion but it together ... it still owes us something for the UFC 112 debacle!

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Shogun vs, Rua 2" in the comments section below. Sound off, Maniacs.

Let’s hear what you have to say: Can anyone stop Shogun? Does "Kos" have a chance against St. Pierre? Does Kimbo does he deserve more airtime?

Josh Koscheck defeats Paul Daley, becomes TUF 12 coach, earns title shot vs Georges St. Pierre

Posted: 08 May 2010 09:16 PM PDT

Joshkoscheckinterview_medium

As it was officially announced this past Thursday by Dana White at the UFC 113 pre-fight press conference, the winner of the night's co-main event in Montreal between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley would indeed receive the shot to face welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre as well as earn a gig on reality TV alongside GSP as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12.

It looks like Koscheck heard the UFC President's message loud and clear.

The TUF 1 competitor/Oscar nominated athlete took the opportunity and ran with it in a one-sided unanimous decision victory over Daley.

After his brilliant acting performance in the opening frame, Koscheck settled nicely into his comfort zone on the ground to grind out each and every round. In a fight marred by amateurish actions, one fighter had to walk away a winner, and it was Montreal's new favorite son.

Koscheck has gone on to score three impressive wins since a surprise loss to Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson," stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" back in September and then choking out Anthony Johnson at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2."

With his win over the Brit at UFC 113, Koscheck will soon be experiencing some deja vu as he will once again get a crack at defeating Georges St. Pierre (GSP beat Josh at UFC 74) and will find himself back on Spike TV as a coach opposite St. Pierre on TUF 12.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 is expected to premiere this September followed by the UFC welterweight title fight in December of this year.

UFC 113: Did Kimbo Slice win last night against Matt Mitrione?

Posted: 08 May 2010 08:00 PM PDT

Slice-mitrione_medium

An undefeated career inside the Octagon just wasn't meant to be for the Youtube-brawler-turned professional mixed martial artist.

Matched up against fellow The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 competitor Matt Mitrione, Kimbo Slice suffered his first official loss under the Zuffa banner at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun."

Though the first round was far from technical, it didn't lack in action. A failed triangle and anaconda choke on the part of Mitrione opened and closed what was a back and forth first five minutes.

The second round saw "Meathead" channel his inner Jose Aldo and leg kick Kimbo literally to the ground. From there, Mitrione just overwhelmed Slice with strikes from mount position until referee Dan Miragliotta called a stop to the fight in what was a dominant victory for Matt.

Slice's only highlight of the night came when he Kanye West'd Mitrione during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

Slice made his way into the UFC the only way Dana White would let him -- as a contestant on the aforementioned Spike TV reality show. Unfortunately, the former YouTube brawler was an early victim to Roy Nelson's belly-to-beard crucifix and was eliminated from the competition in episode three.

Nevertheless, he was given a second chance at UFC stardom (and an opportunity to pad the numbers for key demographics at the Dec. 5 TUF 10 Finale) when he squared off against Houston Alexander in a fight that saw "The Assassin" play ring-around-the-rosy for three rounds with Slice in pursuit.

After huffing and puffing his way to a unanimous decision win, he got another chance to slug it out with power, this time in Montreal.

The defeat to Mitrione coupled with a less than thrilling win over Alexander late last year leaves the Bahamian in a bit of a precarious position. Is he still main card worthy and capable of competing against mid-level heavyweights in the promotion?

Or does this loss send Slice to the unaired prelims portion of UFC events going forward until he eventually finds himself a fan of, rather than a fighter in the UFC?

UFC Quick Quote: Will 'stubborn' or 'smart' Josh Koscheck show up against Paul Daley?

Posted: 08 May 2010 06:05 AM PDT

Koscheck_thiago_medium

"Which Koscheck is going to show up, the stubborn Koscheck that wants to prove a point or the smart Koscheck that knows how to play strategies and beat people to get the win? It depends. You don’t know what’s going on in his head sometimes. Like when he fought Thiago, it was his goal to stand and trade with him. But I think we’ve seen the clear path to beating Paul Daley, when Jake Shields fought and beat him. (Daley) probably is the most dynamic striker in the weight class. He is the most technical and probably the most explosive and powerful. So there’s not too many guys who would do well in a stand up fight with him. It all depends on what Josh decides to do the night of the fight. I think the grappling aspect would fare fairly well."

-- Perennial welterweight contender Jon Fitch weighs in on his American Kickboxing Academy teammate’s chances at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II" against surging slugger Paul Daley. In an MMAmania.com exclusive March interview (which was never published, since the next day Fitch’s would-be opponent, Thiago Alves, the focus of the interview, was forced to pull out of the fight because of a brain irregularity), Fitch addressed the question, "If a potential title shot is on the line for the winner of the fight, should Koscheck take Daley down and grind it out, and do you think he will actually stick with that game plan?" Although it wasn’t known at the time of the interview, MMAmania.com confirmed yesterday that the Koscheck vs. Daley co-main event will, in fact, be for a shot against UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. So, Maniacs, which Kos do you think shows up against "Semtex," the one who plays it smart, or the one out to prove a point?
