UFC 114 video trailer for 'Jackson vs Evans' on May 29

UFC Quick Quote: Rashad Evans is a 'step backward,' but a nice 'warm up' for Rampage Jackson

Posted: 11 May 2010 08:22 PM PDT

Rampage_medium

"I want to go get Rashad. Nice warm-up fight, kick his ass. Fight Shogun, redeem myself for my sleep, for my mind. Then go and beat the hell out of Forrest, retire him.... I feel like fighting Rashad is a step backwards, because he doesn’t have the belt anymore. But if things go right, this will be a nice warm-up fight for Shogun. If everything works out it will be nice. Everybody knows I took time off, it would be stupid to go right into a title fight with Shogun so this will be a good test for me. If I lose to Rashad I don’t even deserve to get my belt back!"

-- Former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson maps out his road back to the top of the 205-pound heap, as well as his plans afterward, in a recent interview with Fighters Only magazine. It's rather ambitious, considering that the new B.A. Barracus "retired" not too long ago to pursue a high-profile role in the "A-Team" remake. Perhaps he realizes that there is a bit of unfinished business to tend to before he heads back to Hollywood. First up is his coaching counterpart on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Rashad Evans, in the main event at UFC 114 later this month. After that tune up, Jackson plans to exact revenge on reigning division champion, Shogun Rua, who punted his head into the Japanese crowd under the Pride FC banner in 2005, and then Forrest Griffin, who he dropped a decision to in 2008. Will Jackson's plan come together when all is said and done or does "Sugar" have what it takes to send him back to the silver screen?

Bruce Beck, Bobby Czyz and Jason Chambers tapped to announce Shine Fights: 'Worlds Collide'

Not only will MMA fans see a great evening of mixed martial arts competition on May 15, but they will also hear expert commentary from the broadcast team brought on-board to announce the event.

Shine Fights Promotion CEO Devin Price today announced that 2006 New York Emmy Award Winner for Outstanding Sports Anchor Bruce Beck and three-time world champion Bobby Czyz have joined MMA star Jason Chambers to form the broadcast team for the May 15 PPV broadcast of "Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs. Thomas."

In addition, Karyn Bryant will serve as a correspondent for the broadcast. Bryant's lengthy television experience includes assignments with SHOWTIME's Championship Boxing series, CBS' "The Early Show" (Guest Anchor), CNN's "77th Academy Awards Red Carpet" program (Host), and TNT's "Super Bowl 98" (Host/Reporter).

Beck is a household name among sports fans, having hosted an array of sports programs and covered a multitude of major sporting events. He is in his thirteenth year with News 4 New York, and is the station's lead sports anchor.

In 2006 he received the New York Emmy for Outstanding Sports Anchor, and for three consecutive years (2007-2009) he was selected as New York State Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Among the sports programs he has hosted are Mike'd Up, News 4 New York's Sunday Night Sports Show, the Toyota Giants Report with Coach Tom Coughlin, and The Rutgers Report with Coach Greg Schiano.

The list of sporting events he has covered for News 4 New York reads like a grocery list of the world's premier competitions: Super Bowl's XLII and XLIII, the World Series, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Finals, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, the U.S. Open Golf Championship, the NCAA Final Four, the Kentucky Derby and the 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 Olympic Games.

Beck also served as the blow-by-blow announcer for numerous UFC events, including UFC 4 thru UFC 15.

"I am looking forward to calling the action on this exciting presentation by Shine Fights," said Beck. "And I can't wait to see Ricardo Mayorga. This warrior has battled the likes of Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad in a boxing ring. Now he makes the transition to MMA in 'Worlds Collide.' Does he have the goods? We'll find out soon enough!"

Czyz compiled a record of 44-8 (28 Kos) and won three world championships during his successful 18-year boxing career. A member of the "International High IQ Society" (Mensa) Czyz was also ranked in the top 10 in six different weight classes.

Among the boxers he fought were Evander Holyfield, Prince Charles Williams, Donnie Lalonde, Virgil Hill, and Dennis Andries. Since retiring from boxing, Czyz has built a successful career as a broadcaster, most notably as a commentator for SHOWTIME's "Championship Boxing" series.

"Ricardo Mayorga was an 'ANIMAL' in the boxing world and claims to have some grappling skills," said Czyz. "We know that Din Thomas can grapple, so this may come down TO WHO LANDS WELL FIRST and WHO HAS THE BEST CHIN! I think this has to be an exciting fight based on the styles and tenacity of these two fighters!"

"We are very proud to announce this dynamic and well-rounded broadcast team," said executive producer Brian Ricco. "'Worlds Collide' is a very unique event and we have assembled a diversified team of talented announcers, with both boxing and MMA backgrounds, that will reflect this cutting edge event."

Beck and Czyz will join previously announced Jason Chambers as part of the Shine Fights commentary team. Their debut will take place on the "Worlds Collide" fight card that will feature a 160-pound catchweight main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas.

The co-main event will showcase a 185 lb. bout between former Elite XC Middleweight Champion Murilo "Ninja" Rua and Canadian warrior Travis "The Gladiator" Galbraith. Also showcased will be a welterweight contest between MMA veteran Nick "The Goat" Thompson and Brazilian star Eduardo Pamplona.

In addition, a surefire ground war is set to take place at 175 pounds between 2009 ADCC Absolute Champion Braulio Estima and former Olympic Judo competitor Rick Hawn. Also, a 205-pound grappler’s dream will also take place between Brazilian star Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira and IFL veteran and BJJ black belt Jamal "The Suit" Patterson, and a simmering slugfest between PRIDE veterans Charles "Kid Khaos" Bennett and Brazilian star Luiz Azeredo will round out the PPV-broadcast main card.

"WORLDS COLLIDE" is taking place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, NC, and will be beamed on PPV on cable and satellite in the United States and Canada. The event will be broadcasted in High-Definition, and it will be available in both English and Spanish (where available). The broadcast will start at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT and will be produced by MultiVision Media, Inc.

There will be a 30-minute countdown show prior to the live event at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT. The event will be available for $29.95. Tickets may be obtained by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420, or online at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the Crown Coliseum Box Office. Thiago Tavares forced out of UFC 114 fight with Melvin Guillard due to injury -- Waylon Lowe tapped as replacement

Updating a previous report on BJPenn.com that Thiago Tavares was forced to pull out of his UFC 114 bout with Melvin Guillard due to an elbow injury, MMA Weekly now confirms Heavy.com's report that Waylon Lowe has stepped in to face "The Young Assassin."

Guillard (23-8-2, 1 NC) has won four of his last five fights and is coming off a unanimous decision win over Ronnys Torres at UFC 109: "Relentless" back in February.

Melvin recently took to the tutelage of famed mixed martial trainer Greg Jackson for his last fight against Torres and looks to have turned the corner in what was a precarious couple years of his once promising career.

He will undoubtedly come into this match up as a heavy favorite against UFC newcomer Lowe.

Waylon Lowe will take an 8-2 professional mark into this contest with Guillard, having spent his entire career competing in smaller shows such as King of the Cage, Bellator, and Fightfest.

He finished his last two opponents in the opening frame via strikes and is currently riding a six-fight win streak.

UFC 114 will run in conjunction with this year's Fan Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and feature a 205-pound grudge match between former light heavyweight champions and Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 coaches "Sugar" Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Strikeforce: Roger Gracie 'prepared for whatever happens' against Kevin Randleman at 'Heavy Artillery'

Quoteworthy:

"Of course there’s a lot of weight behind the (Gracie) name. Many fighters carried the name around for many years. In the same way it gives me a lot of pressure, it pushes me forward a lot. I feel like I have to train that much harder and perform that much better because I have the name. It’s as almost as if it gives you extra strength. My boxing isn’t on a high level. I have decent hands, but my jiu-jitsu is what I’m going to use. My other skills will never be on par with my grappling, so I have to do what I have to do. I believe I’m prepared for whatever happens. I think it makes it harder to win because everyone is going to try their best to get away from the ground (against me). Again, I think that it’s my strength. If I can use it, I’ll be fine, but of course, it’s going to be hard. I’m excited for the fight. Kevin is going to be my toughest opponent yet."

Celebrated ADCC and CBJJ jiu-jitsu champion Roger Gracie puts his family's name on the line when he tangles with mixed martial arts veteran Kevin Randleman at Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" from the Scottstrade Center in St. Lois, Missouri, this Saturday night (May 15) on Showtime. Despite showing much promise, Gracie has only competed once since his victorious 2006 debut  -- a submission win over fading Japanese star Yuki Kondo at Sengoku 2 in May of 2008. Will his grappling skill be enough to overcome the ice-cold but always dangerous "Monster" -- who's dropped a staggering 9 of his last 12?

UFC 113 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Machida vs. Shogun II'

Posted: 11 May 2010 09:22 AM PDT

Ouch

Medical suspensions have been released for the fighters competing at UFC 113: "Machida vs. Shogun II," which took place on Saturday, May 8, 2010, from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

With several of the bouts ending early (and violently), there were a handful of fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors -- though the entire roster was benched for at least seven days.

Chief among them is Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (30 days) for the damage he sustained after Mauricio "Shogun" Rua sent him ass over tin cups in the first round of their main event rematch.

Joining him on the injured reserves is welterweight Jonathan Goulet (30 days) after "The Road Warrior" accidentally pulled the pin of "The Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis.

What comes as a complete surprise is that Jason "The Athlete" MacDonald received just a seven-day suspension despite shattering his leg against John Salter.

Patrick "The Predator" Cote, also getting popped for just a week, broke his hand in a losing effort to Alan "The Talent" Belcher.

All other combatants competing on the May 8 fight card were issued seven or 14 day suspensions and are as follows:

Seven day suspensions

Alan Belcher
Jason MacDonald
Joe Doerksen
John Salter
Kimbo Slice
Marcus Davis
Matthew Mitrione
Mauricio Rua
Patrick Cote
Tom Lawlor

Fourteen day suspensions

Jeremy Stephens
John Hendricks
Jose Beltran
Josh Koscheck
Michael Guymon
Paul Daley
Sam Stout
Tim Grant
Tim Hague
Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Bellator 18: Paulo Filho out, Jay Silva in against Hector Lombard on May 13

Posted: 11 May 2010 08:54 AM PDT

Maligned middleweight enigma Paulo Filho (19-1) has withdrawn from his upcoming Bellator 18 non-title fight against Hector Lombard on May 13 due to "Visa issues" according to GracieFighter.com.

From "Ely:"

"It seems the event took too long in sending out the letter I needed to present at the consulate and I’m not sure but it could be there was some kind of failure on the part of my managers. So, I won’t get my visa in time. I’m really upset because I’ve been training a lot. I did everything just right; I don’t know what to say."

Somehow I don't think anyone is that shocked.

The former WEC Middleweight Champion recently bailed on a scheduled appearance against Yuki Sasaki at Bitetti Combat 6 back on Feb. 25 after insisting his financial agreement wasn't worked out with the promoters beforehand and the terms were unfavorable.

He also blamed Visa issues when he no-showed the DREAM 12 event in October 2009.

SI.com is reporting that former UFC 185-pound up-and-comer Jay Silva (5-3) has agreed to step in on short notice and take his place against "Hektor" this Thursday from the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, Louisiana.

The talented-but-troubled Filho has been all over the map, both figuratively and literally since his bizarre loss to Chael Sonnen at WEC 36 in November 2008 and hasn't faced a competitor even remotely close to his level of skill in over two years.

Now he may be looking at another lengthy layoff if fight promotions choose not to book him based on his erratic behavior and history of pulling out of fights.

UFC 115 prelims on Spike TV to feature Griffin vs Dunham and Danzig vs Wiman

Posted: 11 May 2010 06:37 AM PDT

Griffin-dunham_medium_medium

Spike TV will once again offer mixed martial arts fans a look at select preliminary bouts when it airs live under card action from the upcoming UFC 115: "Liddell vs. Franklin" pay-per-view on June 12 from the GM Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

UFC lightweight stars Mac Danzig and Matt Wiman will bring their bout to the airwaves alongside the 155-pound scrap between Evan Dunham and Tyson Griffin. The action begins with limited-commercial interruption at 9 p.m. ET on Spike.

For longevity's sake, hopefully the televised prelims for UFC 115 will outperform the televised portion of UFC 111 and the 1.2 million viewers it garnered -- an all-time low for the series since its 2009 debut.

UFC 115 will feature a reworked main event of Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11 coaches Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell and Rich "Ace" Franklin as well as a main card bout between Pat "Get Hype" Barry and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

To get up to speed on the "Liddell vs. Franklin" event be sure to check out the complete UFC 115 archive by clicking here.
