Andrei Arlovski: 'I just can't lose again' Posted: 14 May 2010 06:04 AM PDT Props: GantDaily.com Quoteworthy:
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski tries to crawl out of the 0-2 hole he finds himself in after back-to-back losses to Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers in 2009. "The Pitbull" faces the dangerous Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva at Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" tomorrow night (May 15) in St. Louis and could find himself difficult to employ with another disappointing loss. It should be noted the Belarusian has never lost three straight fights and may have finally gotten the wake up call he needed against "The Grim" last June. Can he return to form and climb his way back into contention? Or is it too little, too late? |

Shine Fights preview and quick picks for Worlds Collide: 'Mayorga vs Thomas' on May 15 Posted: 13 May 2010 09:54 PM PDT Upstart mixed martial arts promotion Shine Fights is all set to host the third event of its young history this weekend. "Worlds Collide" will air live on pay-per-view from the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina, this Saturday night (May 15) beginning at 9 p.m. ET. Featured in the main event will be a highly anticipated battle between boxer and mixed martial artist as 36-year-old former professional boxing champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga steps into the MMA cage for the first time opposite Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Din "Dinyero" Thomas. Several other highly respected fighters will be in action on the card as well, including Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Nick "The Goat" Thompson, Eduardo Pamplona, David Heath and others. Fan favorite Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett is also scheduled to compete on the seven-fight PPV broadcast. To help get you better prepared for the festivities, I've given some quick analysis and predictions for the three most anticipated fights on the card. Check it out below. Din "Dinyero" Thomas vs. Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga Whoever it was from the Mayorga camp that thought taking this fight was a good idea should be fired immediately. I'm actually sort of surprised this is even being allowed to take place. On one side, there's a 36 year old retired boxer making his MMA debut, who has been knocked out in three of his last five boxing matches and hasn't competed since 2008. On the other, there's a 33 fight mixed martial arts veteran with a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, who is riding a hot streak of three straight wins and has experience against guys like BJ Penn, Matt Serra, Jens Pulver, Kenny Florian, Clay Guida, Caol Uno and several others. Doesn't really seem like a fair fight. Mayorga should have taken a page out of Herschel Walker's book and fought a fellow newcomer his first time out. Instead he opts to debut against a 33 fight MMA veteran with a black belt in jiu jitsu and 14 career submission wins? Come on, man. A high level mixed martial artist like Din Thomas isn't going to allow an over the hill boxer like Ricardo Mayorga to come over and make his sport look bad. Mayorga is going to be made an example of on Saturday night, and James Toney won't be too far behind him. This one's going to get ugly, which is why I can't wait to see it. Final Prediction: Din Thomas via submission.
I liked "Ninja's" chances against Galbraith, and I like them even more now against Heath. Heath has decent power, but Rua is easily the better overall striker. Like his brother, he can end fights with his hands, his feet and his knees. He brings a versatile Muay Thai attack and he has nine career wins by (T)KO to his credit. If Heath elects to stand with "Ninja," I don't think he'll last past the first two rounds, unless he takes an extremely conservative approach. On the other hand, if he takes Rua down, he probably won't last too long there either. "Ninja" is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu with seven career wins by submission. And it's worth noting that three of Heath's career losses were tap outs. Heath is sort of going to have to pick his poison in this fight, which is never a good thing. Like I said, though, it shouldn't matter all that much. As long as "Ninja" comes in focused on Saturday night, he should be able to pull off the win. I do think that Heath will try to keep the fight standing, which will ultimately lead to one of two outcomes: Either he'll get dropped with strikes and finished off with some type of choke, or he'll get dropped with strikes and finished off with more strikes. Either way, "Ninja" for the win. Final Prediction: Murilo "Ninja" Rua via submission
This is easily the most difficult fight of the three to predict. Both guys are very underrated mixed martial artists and each has his own style. "The Goat" went twelve consecutive fights without a loss between June of 2006 and June of 2008. Since then, however, he's dropped three of five, including being stopped from strikes in both of his two most recent outings. His most recent win was a unanimous decision over feared British striker Paul Daley, which is impressive, but there's still no denying that he's in a big slump right now. Pamplona, on the other hand, has been filling up the win column. The Brazilian has won seven straight fights since losing by technical knockout in the third round to Robbie Lawler back in early 2007 at an IFL event. He's a bit of a grinder. Most of his fights end up going to the scorecards, but he has a good motor and a solid all-around game, so he wins most of the decisions. I think "The Goat" is better technically as both a striker and grappler, though, and he's certainly got more of a killer instinct. I think this is his fight to win, as long as he fights at his best, which has been a concern with him lately. But with a potential third straight loss staring him in the face, I'm confident we'll see the best possible Nick Thompson on Saturday night. Pamplona should have a slight strength advantage on fight night, but that might lure him into a false sense of security in thinking that he'll be able to grind out a decision on top of Thompson. That's unlikely, though. In over fifty fights, Thompson has never lost a fight on the cards. I like "The Goat's" length on his feet and I like his finishing ability in all areas. He'll get taken to the ground at some point in this fight, and I expect him to work his way into a submission of some sort from there. Final Prediction: Nick "The Goat" Thompson via submission That's all from us. Here's a look at the full lineup for the pay-per-view telecast for Saturday night:
Check in early and often -- it should be an exciting night of fights! In the meantime, feel free to share your Shine Fights-related thoughts and predictions in the comments section below. |
Bellator 18 results: Lombard KO's Silva in six seconds; Warren and 'Pitbull' victorious Posted: 13 May 2010 09:51 PM PDT MONROE, La. (May 13, 2010) - World Champion wrestler Joe Warren and undefeated jiu-jitsu black belt Patricio Pitbull punched their tickets to the Bellator Featherweight Tournament Finals on Thursday while reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard made yet another statement that he is one of the world's top 185-pounders during a thrilling night of fights at Bellator 18. Lombard used a vicious right-left combo to the chin to KO former UFC fighter Jay Silva just 6.1 seconds into their fight, bringing the capacity crowd at the Monroe Civic Center in Monroe, La. - and Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney - to their feet. "That's the Hector Lombard I expected to see tonight," Rebney said afterward. "He is a tremendously talented middleweight who I believe is one of the best in the world and now American MMA fans are getting to see what some of us already know." Lombard, who improved his stellar pro record to 25-2-1 with the win, summed up his performance in three words: "That was beautiful," he said. But while Lombard's knockout will undoubtedly be the most-talked-about moment from Bellator 18, the victories by Warren and Pitbull had more immediate implications, setting up an intriguing final-round fight between one of America's top wrestlers and an incredibly well-rounded and pedigreed jiu-jitsu and muay thai specialist. In his fight, Warren used sheer strength and determination to slip out of no less than five submission attempts - two armbars, a heel hook and two guillotines - to win a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over up-and-comer and former pro soccer player Georgi Karakhanyan (13-2). Warren (4-1), the 2006 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Champion and a former NCAA all-American at the University of Michigan, used a series of powerful wrestling takedowns to control the cage for all three rounds, wearing Karakhanyan down with a relentless ground-and-pound. "I knew that he was good with the knees, so I thought I'd take him down," an amped-up Warren told Bellator color commentator Jimmy Smith after the fight. "I'm one step closer to that belt now and that's what I'm here for." Later, in a battle of two Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts, Pitbull used his superior standup game to score points with leg kicks, jabs and knees to the head to withstand a strong challenge from Bellator Season 1 runner up Wilson Reis (10-2). With the win, Pitbull improved his overall pro record to a perfect 14-0 and booked passage into the Season 2 finals along with Warren, who said of Pitbull afterward: "He's a great fighter ... he's going to be a great win on my record." Pitbull, wearing the Brazilian flag as a cape, disagreed. "Everyone wants to talk, talk, talk," he said through his translator. "I want to see what happens in the cage. I'm looking forward to the next round." Rebney, for his part, sang Pitbull's praises, calling him "a true phenom." "He's done some amazing things in Brazil that nobody's gotten to see, and now we're all getting a chance to see it," Rebney said. "And Joe Warren proved yet again what a great, determined fighter he is with another gutsy performance. It's gonna be a great final round." In the final televised fight of the night - a match-up between two former all-state wrestlers from Louisiana - New Orleans-area native Charlie Rader (11-4) scored the sixth KO of his career with a first round knockout (3:20) of former TUF competitor Christian Fulgium. "From beginning to end, it was a spectacular night of fights," Rebney said. "It was great being back in the city of Monroe and putting on a great show. We'll be back again soon." Fans who missed Thursday night's action can watch all the best moments this weekend during special highlight shows on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2. Check your local listings for exact dates and times. Bellator returns to action next week from the Verizon Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas, with two semifinal fights in the Season 2 Welterweight Tournament: former two-time NCAA wrestling champion and U.S. Olympian Ben Askren vs. UFC veteran Ryan Thomas and fast-rising MMA star Dan Hornbuckle vs. Iraq war veteran Steve Carl. The evening also features another Bellator "Super Fight," with reigning Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Soto taking on UFC veteran Diego Saraiva.. UFC 'Primetime' ratings on Spike TV for 'Rampage vs Evans' the best ever Posted: 13 May 2010 06:28 PM PDT Move over pay-per-view (PPV) powerhouses Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn, the UFC 114 main event is where it's at ... if television ratings are any indicator, anyway. The first of three episodes for the latest UFC "Primetime," featuring former light heavyweight champions -- and arch enemies -- Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rashad Evans, reeled in approximately 1.2 million viewers for Spike TV last night (May 12). By comparison, the first series (Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn) in early 2009 never eclipsed the million mark, and the second (with Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy) earlier this year maxed out with around 1 million viewers for its premiere. Episodes two and three are scheduled to run prior to UFC 114: "Rampage vs. Evans," which is set to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 29. In fact, you can catch them on May 19 and 26, respectively, at 11 p.m. ET on Spike TV. If you haven't got your UFC 114 fix yet, or need to catch up, remember to hit up our event archive right here. |
Brett Rogers is looking to finish what Alistair Overeem started at Strikeforce: 'Heavy Artillery' Posted: 13 May 2010 01:31 PM PDT The main event of this weekend's Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" card is a heavyweight match up that fight fans are salivating over. When Brett Rogers and Alistair Overeem step inside the cage on May 15 in St. Louis, Missouri to compete for the promotion's heavyweight title, two of the best strikers in the division are gonna go toe to toe, likely not for the full five rounds, with only one athlete walking away with the belt around their waist. As if the battle inside the cage wasn't enough to get fans hyped for the fight, the disdain that each guy has for the other is well documented, and an absolute welcome side story to a contest that what will most assuredly end in a highlight reel knockout. As the heavyweight title fight quickly approaches, Brett Rogers joined Larry Pepe on this week's edition of Pro MMA Radio, presented exclusively by MMAmania.com. "The Grim" talked about his fight with Fedor Emelianenko, the lack of respect between himself and Alistair Overeem, and how he sees the title fight playing out. Here's a hint, he doesn't foresee the judges having to do much work. If there was ever a fight where the loser could come out of the bout with more confidence than he had coming into it, it was Brett's fight against Fedor last fall. Though he was knocked out in the second round, Rogers undoubtedly won the opening frame and looked good doing it. Not many opponents of the Russian heavyweight can say that. "The first round went great; the wheels were rolling. But in the second round, I just started thinking too much. I was worried about what he was doing instead of what I was doing. I just got caught sleeping, and, well, he caught me. But it's a lesson learned, now I know I just gotta go in the there and whoop ass." "The Grim" went on to detail what was so different in fighting Fedor. "He wasn't as aggressive as I thought he was gonna be. Plus, he's the number one guy in the world. I thought he was gonna try to teach me a lesson right away. And holding him when we were grappling, it was like holding dead weight. It was nothing that I've ever felt before. If I moved a certain way, he would move right with me, I couldn't manipulate where he would go. It was strange, it threw me off." And though he felt like he accomplished some good things in the fight, he admits that the loss stuck with him for a while and says he can't wait to get his rematch. "It ate me up a little. But Fedor is a veteran of the game and he has won tons of fights. It was just my first loss. I reviewed the tape about 100 times and saw some things I can do better in my next fight. I want a rematch with him bad. On a scale of 1-10, it's about a 20. I'm gonna go in there [against Overeem] and snatch this title, and he'll have no choice but to fight me again." As for his title fight against Alistair Overeem, Rogers stated that he's coming into the fight with some pent-up anger toward the Dutch striker. Brett detailed a not-so-pleasant encounter he had with "The Demolition Man" a couple years back. "We bumped into each other in an elevator a while ago. I knew his name but I don't know his face. Everybody told me he was a real cocky and arrogant dude. And I could see that right away. It was like I was supposed to know him and bow down to him. His demeanor was, ‘I'm the top dog, respect me,' you know? I caught that vibe from him and I never forgot it. And there's been some articles written where he was talking a lot of smack and talking about knocking me out to shut me up. I'm absolutely using that for motivation." And though the general rule of thumb is that it's better not to fight on emotion, Rogers says it's actually something that helps him. "I fight better with emotion believe it or not. When I'm in training and I hear negative things, it turns into a great training day. If I go in there with someone who is disrespecting me, they're gonna get the best of me. That's just how it is." Brett later added that he had the same type of negative feelings toward Andrei Arlovski coming into his bout with the Belarusian heavyweight, but couldn't say the same thing about Fedor. "Andrei Arlovski is the only other fighter that I've been in the cage with that I disliked as much as Overeem. I don't want to make it appear that I'm disrespecting my opponents. But I'm used to coming in as an underdog, and like Overeem has been, Arlovski was just very disrespectful in the lead up to the fight. He had no respect for me. And if I don't like you, I'm gonna let it be known. I didn't have any of that with Fedor. Fedor is hard to hate. I couldn't push any buttons with him. I couldn't hate him if I tried." "The Grim" also wants everyone to know that he is well of aware of the fact that Overeem really wants to fight "The Last Emperor" and is likely looking past him. "I know he just wants to fight Fedor. He only wants to fight him. But we gotta fight first. He's just pushing me to the side like I'm nothing. I notice that, believe me." So how does Rogers size this fight up? Well, speaking of size, that's the only thing he's giving Overeem an advantage in. Besides that, Brett points to the fact that in this fight, a mixed martial arts contest, Alistair won't be the same fighter he is when he's knocking out people left and right in K-1. "Well, I give him the size advantage. He definitely worked hard to get there [laughs]. But I don't get intimidated. The thing with him is that, in K-1 he fights real confident, real aggressive. But in MMA, he's way more cautious. His chin is suspect too. Once I put these hands on him, he's gonna be backing up the whole time. He won't want no part of it." Of course one of the main story lines coming into this bout has been Alistair and his "questionable" body transformation over the last few years. And Rogers isn't making any bones about it. He thinks something is up, and he wants to get to the bottom of it. "That's the rumor man [Overeem has used performance enhancing drugs]. I hear there's a lot of horse meat in that eastern diet he is on. Look, I'm gonna take a full out steroid test and so will he; we'll see how it goes. Everyone is assuming that there is something going on with him and steroids, so I want to find out. He better know he's gonna get tested, so he best put down the needles and come over here to America to get this ass whooping." There has been some recent talk that neither fighter will get tested coming into the match up, which is absurd and a story for another day. But either way, Brett says it won't make a difference. As to Overeem's claims that he's putting Rogers to sleep early in the fight, well let's just say he has a different opinion on how the bout is ending. "Please. There's no way. It's all talk from him. I'm gonna put him to the test. I'm gonna come right at him. Wherever I see him I'm coming right at him. I ain't gonna flinch. I'm knocking him out in the first two minutes of this fight." |
Chuck Liddell: 'If I haven’t got good jiu-jitsu and wrestling then I won’t be a good striker' Posted: 13 May 2010 01:18 PM PDT Props: NOCAUTE Quoteworthy:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt Chuck Liddell reinforces the retirement matter was up to president Dana White and as far as we can notice the veteran is ready to be back inside the Octagon. "The Iceman" has been training the sweet art for thirteen years and it's part of his preparation to be a complete mixed martial artist. Known for his heavy punches, Chuck would surprise the audience of UFC 115 with a submission win over Rich "Ace" Franklin. Would you also like to see it, Maniacs? |
Ken Shamrock vs Pedro Rizzo booked for IFC on July 17 in Australia Posted: 13 May 2010 01:09 PM PDT In case you weren't excited by today's announcement that Sean Salmon was returning to North American MMA, I present to you the next chapter in the Ken Shamrock saga, as the UFC Hall-of-Famer travels "Down Under" to face fellow fading fight monger Pedro Rizzo at Impact FC on July 17 in Australia. MMA Fighting broke the good news earlier today. Shamrock (27-13-2) hasn't been heard from since failing the world's most dangerous drug test back in early 2009. The UFC pioneer was popped for anabolic steroids — Norandrosterone, Noretiocholanolone and Stanozolol following his first round armbar submission win over the late Ross Clifton at War Gods: "Valentine’s Eve Massacre" last February. Shammy was fined $2,500 and suspended one year for the transgression. During that time, his Mexican bout with Seth Petruzelli was canceled, he was forced to endure the death of his father and slapped with a bill for $175,000 in legal fees after he was unsuccessful in suing Zuffa for breach of contract. Tough year for Shams -- but it hasn't exactly been a full-time fiesta at casa de Rizzo either. Like Shamrock, the Brazilian has seen better days as a competitor. "The Rock" (17-9) is coming off an ugly decision win over Jeff Monson at Bittetti Combat 4 last September, but prior to that was knocked clean out in back-to-back fights by Josh Barnett and Gilbert Yvel. While both men found themselves at the top of the UFC in the mid -to-late nineties, age and the evolution of MMA has unfortunately caught up to them. What's left are two men with the will to compete but very little to offer besides the memories of better days. Impact FC is expected to feature a handful of ex-PRIDE and UFC stars over the course of three events this July including Josh Barnett, Jeremy May and Murilo Rua. Paul "Semtex" Daley is also in talks to appear. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates to the July 17 event as they become available. |
UFC 118: Marcus Davis cautiously optimistic about possible Nate Diaz fight Posted: 13 May 2010 10:02 AM PDT
UFC welterweight veteran Marcus Davis gives MMAmania.com an update on his participation in a rumored UFC 118 scrap against fellow 170-pound warrior Nate Diaz. "The Irish Hand Grenade" is more than happy to throw down in the promotion's first-ever trip to Boston, but also knows the fight is far from a sure thing. Diaz is expected to face disciplinary action from the Tennessee Athletic Commission for his role in the Strikeforce/CBS televised brawl back on April 24. Nashville flooding has postponed the commission's meeting until May 27 and the repercussions could jeopardize his availability for a late summer event. Stay tuned. |
Orange County D.A. will not prosecute Tito Ortiz for domestic violence Posted: 13 May 2010 09:41 AM PDT Unlike his last couple of fights, this is one decision that Tito Ortiz won't be leaving in the hands of the judges. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" escaped criminal prosecution for felony domestic violence today after the Orange County District Attorney rejected his case based on "insufficient corroboration to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he attacked his girlfriend Jenna Jameson." TMZ passed along the not-so-surprising news earlier today. Ortiz and Jameson were photographed as recently as Mother's Day, where the reconciled couple were seen hanging out at the beach with their children. The district's decision not to move forward with prosecution likely stems from Jameson's inability to stick with her story regarding the domestic incident that took place at their house on April 26, for which Ortiz was arrested and taken into custody. There was a lot of he said/she said following the arrest. Jameson alleged he beat the crap out of her. Ortiz claimed she was addicted to Oxycontin. Both eventually retracted those statements (and the ex-porn star subsequently tested negative for drugs). Apparently it was all just a big misunderstanding. One that happened to involve a lot of police. Anyway, they're back together and reportedly working through their differences. Who said there's no such thing as a happy ending? |
UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida will be back and stronger than ever Posted: 13 May 2010 06:15 AM PDT

Fabiola Machida – The Dragon’s wife – revealed that her husband and is upset but calm because that result was fight business. The good news is Lyoto doesn’t need to undergo any surgery on his face and will be back to the camping in two months, stronger than ever. |

Ringside 7: Sean Salmon vs Tom Murphy booked for 'No Escape' on June 18 Posted: 13 May 2010 05:18 AM PDT Don't call it a comeback. Former UFC light heavyweight Sean Salmon returns to North American mixed martial arts when he takes on Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 castaway Tom Murphy at Ringside 7: "No Escape" from the Centre Pierre Charbonneau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Friday, June 18. Interestingly enough, both men are probably best known for losing to Rashad Evans. Salmon was poached by the Ohio State Athletic Commission in the latter part of 2009 for comments he made following a June 6 loss to Allan Weickert at "Fight Nite in the Flats 5." The Ohio native, who also operates his S.S. Combat & Fitness Center in the area, blogged that he "gave" Weickert an armbar submission win at the aforementioned bout to avoid further damage. The troubled fighter, who can still be seen via highlight reel sustaining a brutal knockout loss to Evans at UFC Fight Night 8, also admitted that his purpose for exiting the fight unscathed was to preserve his role as a training partner for Michael Bisping and Cheick Kongo for their upcoming fights. His admission set off a firestorm on the message boards among mixed martial arts purists and he has since attempted to clarify his incendiary remarks. Unfortunately his explanation was unsatisfactory for the Commission, who suspended and fined him following an Oct. 14 hearing. The suspension is considered retroactive and will expire on June 6, 2010 -- nearly two weeks before his appearance at Ringside 7. Still, that hasn't stopped him from competing. Salmon made two appearances under the Fight Festival banner in Finland where his suspension is not recognized. After a unanimous decision win over Yuki Sasaki last October, he was knocked out via knee to the body courtesy of Alexander Shlemenko back in March. Salmon is 5-5 in his past ten fights. Murphy on the other hand is still undefeated (the Evans loss on TUF was considered an exhibition) at 6-0. But he also only fights on an average of once a year, which explains why he's had only six professional fights since his 2004 debut. On a positive note, they've all been finishes. Will Salmon be number seven? Here is the current "No Escape" fight card:
