Strikeforce Challengers 8: 'Lindland vs Casey' recap and final thoughts Posted: 21 May 2010 11:39 PM PDT The eighth edition of the Strikeforce Challenger Series has come to a close from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. While these shows are traditionally used to promote up and comers and lesser known talent, that didn't stop well traveled and accomplished mixed martial arts veteran Matt "The Law" Lindland from jumping at the opportunity to get a fight in his own backyard. The Portland native headlined the event opposite young Brazilian jiu jitsu ace "King" Kevin Casey, and there was no way "The Law" was going to disappoint his hometown faithful on this night. Coming in on the heels of back to back losses for the first time in his career, the former Olympic Greco Roman Wrestling silver medalist needed a win badly. Mission accomplished. Lindland schooled and punished his inexperienced counterpart with his trademark wrestling attack. He controlled the majority of the fight from the top position on the ground, and he picked the Rickson Gracie trained fighter apart with punches and elbows from there, much to the delight of the Oregonians in attendance. Casey flashed some solid jiu jitsu in the first round, taking Lindland's back and maintaining that position for most of the round. However, once Lindland reversed the hold, the fight went in a completely different direction. From then on, it was basically a one-sided fight. Lindland pounded away at the youngster until the referee finally put an end to the beating midway through the third round. In the co-main event of the night, highly regarded welterweight prospect Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley eked out a split decision by the skin of his teeth over hometown favorite Nathan Coy. Needless to say, the Portland fans weren't too happy with the outcome. Coy set a high pace at the start of the fight and carried it throughout the full fifteen minutes. He executed his gameplan well. He established the leg kick early and worked his takedowns off of that. I thought he had done enough to win the fight, too. Woodley was clearly bothered by the kicks, and the stand-out collegiate wrestler looked frustrated and confused in the cage for the first time in his young career. He continued to battle and score points of his own, though. "T-Wood" was active and successful on the ground. He was able to take Coy's back more than once in the first and second round, and very nearly finished the fight with submissions a few times as well. That positioning and aggression on the ground, along with a few timely takedowns and well placed counter strikes are likely what stood out to the judges who scored him the first two rounds. This was a step up in competition for him, and he struggled for the first time in his career. It's going to be interesting to see how this fight affects "T-Wood" going forward. In a fight that eerily resembled the first encounter between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith two years ago, hard hitting welterweights Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker put on a fantastic show for two and a half rounds before the fight was prematurely called midway through the third due to an incidental eye poke from Voelker. Bowling was an animal in this fight, refusing to let up from his frantic pace of punch combinations and takedowns. He punished Voelker early and often, and the fight appeared to be on the verge of being stopped several times in the first two rounds. But Voelker stood tough throughout and showed a ridiculously tough chin. He took a massive beating in this fight but he never stopped moving forward and throwing punches of his own. Bowling was relentless, too. He didn't let up off of Voelker for one minute, but the American jiu jitsu fighter was still right there fighting back the entire time. The end wasn't fulfilling, but this was still a great fight. I don't know what was more impressive, Voelker's chin, or Bowling's ability to keep up that insane pace for two and a half rounds. Both were equally sickening. Hopefully we'll get a rematch, even though Bowling clearly won the fight. In a entertaining middleweight contest, Belgium fighter Tarec "Sponge" Saffiedine stopped American Kickboxing Academy trainee Nate Moore with a fight ending overhand right midway through the second round. "Sponge" out-worked Moore for the first five minutes of the fight and likely was ahead on the cards after the first round. That didn't matter, though. Saffiedine made him pay with several leg kicks and punches early in the second round before ending the fight with a brutal right hand punch. The Team Quest trainee moved to 2-0 under the Strikeforce banner. And finally, in the fight that kicked off the Showtime portion of the card, local favorite Pat "Bam Bam" Healy out-pointed Bryan Travers on the scorecards for a unanimous decision victory. "Bam Bam" manhandled Travers in the clinch and battered the Strikeforce newcomer with numerous knees and punches to the body. Travers stayed competitive throughout the three round battle, but Healy's work inside the clinch was the difference when the scores came in. That's a wrap from Portland. Next up for Strikeforce is a trip south to the "City of Angles" for Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" on June 16 from the Nokia Theatre. Former Elite XC middleweight title holder "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler will headline the Showtime televised event opposite former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral in a 195 pound catchweight bout. Former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley will also be in action, as will Marius Zaromskis, Shane Del Rosario, Lolohea Mahe, Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos and others. Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for more on that developing fight card and all your Strikeforce news and notes. Many of our readers check-in before, during and after the event to share their thoughts on the action. Without further ado, here are the Moosin "Gods of Martial Arts" QUICK RESULTS: Main card: Travis Wiuff defeats Josh Barnes via KO at 0:34 of round 1 Rafael Natal defeats Travis Lutter via KO at 4:12 of round 1 Mike Campbell defeats Yves Edwards via unanimous decision Roxy Modafferi defeats Tara LaRosa via split decision Preliminary card: Forrest Petz defeats Ralph Johnson via unanimous decision Matt Lee defeats Brett Oteri via TKO at 1:46 of round 2 Anthony Lapsley defeats Fred Belleton via submission (kneebar) at 0:59 of round 1 Stipe Miocic defeats Paul Barry via TKO at 1:52 of round 2
Moosin "Gods of Martial Arts fight recaps: Jeremy Jackson here! Time to rock and roll, Maniacs! Tim Sylvia vs. Marius Pudzianowski Fight recap: Sylvia is listed at 260. Nice try, guys. Pudzianowski is serenaded to the cage by a Polish rapper. The fighters' respective anthems are sung and it's time to get it on. Big leg kick by Marius and he's going for the takedown. He's got it! Sylvia gets back to his feet and Marius has him clinched against the fence. Sylvia lands some shots and a knee to the body. Marius is looking tired already. Sylvia is controlling the clinch with knees now and Marius is bright red. Hard jab by Tim and he tosses Marius to the mat and lands in guard. Side control for Sylvia and a thoroughly gassed Marius looks to be in big trouble as the round ends. Big knees by Sylvia and a hard right hand. Pudzianowski is warned for grabbing the fence. Now Marius collapses from a weak-looking uppercut! Sylvia takes side control and starts dropping shots and Marius is tapping enthusiastically. Tim announces that he's back, but in this observer's opinion that has yet to be determined. Marius might want to stick to carrying Volkswagons around. They don't hit back. Sylvia wins by submission to top off an exciting night of action.
Travis Wiuff vs. Josh Barnes Fight recap: Don't blink, folks. These big boys are swinging. Both fighters trade bombs and Wiuff lands a huge left hook that sends Barnes reeling backwards into the cage. Wiuff pounces and starts dropping unchecked blows to the head. This one is over in a hurry. Wiuff by KO. Travis Lutter vs. Rafael Natal Fight recap: Lutter looks doughy. Big surprise. He misses an overhand right and gets clipped with a head kick. Lutter can't get the double-leg and that's a recurring theme in round 1. Lutter looks to already be tiring. Natal catches Lutter with a straight left and smashes him with an uppercut. The finishing ground strikes are elementary. Lutter's crappy conditioning costs him yet again. Natal by KO. Yves Edwards vs. Mike Campbell Fight recap: Crisp exchanges. Sweet body kick from Campbell. Campbell pushes forward while Edwards tries to counter. Campbell with a couple leg kicks. Edwards bobs and weaves and shoots in. Campbell reverses him and gets on top but Yves gets up. Campbell gets him down again, slips into half guard. Yves misses a big knee. Campbell's right eye is cut but he looked good in round 1. Yves comes out firing punches and kicks in round 2. Yves takes Campbell's back. Campbell reverses a rear naked choke attempt and both fighters spring to their feet. Big slam for Edwards and he's got Campbell's back once more. Again Campbell turns out of it. Campbell lands a left hook. Now they're exchanging some hard strikes. Edwards probably takes round 2. Good fight. Edwards jukes and jives while Campbell presses. Now Edwards is the aggressor. He lands a couple punches and misses a knee. Campbell elects to attempt a single-leg, but Edwards defends and ends up on top. Campbell sweeps him and briefly gains top position. Edwards with a half-piledriver and the fight ends on the ground. Another ridiculously close fight. I give the edge to Edwards but the judges disagree. Unanimous decision for Campbell. Tara LaRosa vs. Roxy Modafferi Fight recap: Roxy looks slow and tentative. LaRosa lands a right hand. La Rosa clinches Roxy against the cage but can't secure the takedown. Now Roxy has Tara pinned against the fence. Tara finally gets back to her feet. Tara lands a nice punch but Roxy lands her own BIG shot to end the round. Roxy gets a takedown early in round 2. Now both fighters are very tentative on their feet. Roxy lands a knee to the body and now LaRosa finds a home for a hard three-punch combination. Takedown for Larosa. LaRosa counters Roxy and drops her with a right hand early in round 3. Roxy sinks in a triangle form the bottom! After an eternity Tara escapes. Now Tara gets a takedown. The fight ends with both combatants stalled against the cage. Very tough to call. The judges award Roxy the split decision victory.

Georges St. Pierre defeats Georges Laraque in 'Off the Record' grappling match Posted: 21 May 2010 06:33 PM PDT Be careful what you wish for. UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre accepted a challenge from friend and fellow Canadian Georges Laraque for a grappling match that took place earlier today (May 21) at the Tristar Gym in Montreal. The 33-year old heavyweight hockey player, who last skated for the Montreal Canadiens, appeared with "Rush" on a recent episode of "Off the Record," where he promised to use his weight advantage against GSP and "pick him up and body slam him." Didn't quite work out that way. "Rush" used his speed and technique to upend the big man early and often and by the third round, all he needed was cardio to keep the party going. From St. Pierre, courtesy of TSN.ca: "I'm sure that if I had shown him a couple of techniques and if he had trained as long as me, with his size, strength and power, he would beat me. But the knowledge that I have that he does not, that was the difference. I was surprised. He's better than I thought he would be. I respect him a lot because he showed up. A lot of guys talk but don't show up." GSP is considered one of the sport's finest wrestlers despite having no collegiate background -- something that surprised Laraque after going three rounds against the smaller opponent.
St. Pierre can be seen on the upcoming twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) coaching opposite Josh Koscheck as the two count down to their 170-pound rematch. In the meantime, you can check out the video of him grappling with Laraque over at TSN by clicking here.

Moosin odds and betting lines for 'Gods of Martial Arts' Posted: 21 May 2010 03:16 PM PDT Moosin MMA: "Gods of Martial Arts" is set to go down tonight (Friday, May 21) live on pay-per-view from the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, featuring a main event between Tim Sylvia and Mariusz Pudzianowski. And I think it can be said we officially have the world's strongest underdog. "Dominator" is coming in at +200, which tells me the oddsmakers must have missed the weigh ins...and the Ray Mercer fight...and the weigh ins. Did I mention the weigh ins? Sylvia tipped the scales at a paunchy 305-pounds. He must have been a "Maniac" at the buffet table heading into this contest, which indicates he's either completely out of touch with his training or he's not taking the Polish powerhouse seriously. Either way, +200 looks tempting, even for a cardio-depraved gorilla like Pudzianowski. Then again, anything is possible in this sport and there's a reason they call me Nostradumbass and not Nostragenius. Still, those who lay down some cheddar on the underdogs tonight stand to make a healthy profit. Assuming you win, of course. Here are the latest "Gods of Martial Arts" odds (- = favorite; + = underdog):

Alistair Overeem, five other fighters pass Strikeforce drug testing for 'Heavy Artillery' Posted: 21 May 2010 12:52 PM PDT "The Reem" is clean. At least so says Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. First reported by Loretta Hunt, Strikeforce has since confirmed the test results with MMAmania.com. Six of the ten fighters from the "Heavy Artillery" main card who were tested for anabolic steroids passed a urinalysis administered by an independent local laboratory contracted by Strikeforce after the pre-fight weigh-ins. Those fighters include the aforementioned Overeem, Antonio Silva, Joey Villasenor, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and Antwain Britt. Results for Brett Rogers, Andrei Arlovski, Roger Gracie, and Kevin Randleman are still pending. Speculation of the event's pre and post-fight drug testing surfaced in the weeks leading up to the event as the Missouri Office of Athletics announced it would only administer random drug testing for the event, potentially leaving some doubt as to whether Overeem would indeed be tested. "When the commission here said they'd only be random testing, I didn't want there to be an ounce of doubt and have all these critics say, ‘Ah, Alistair didn't get tested, Feijao didn't get tested,'" Coker told Sherdog.com. So there you have it, the critics have been silenced... for the time being anyway. Though haters are gonna hate, any Alistair naysayers out there want to make amends for their pre-fight "Demolition Man" dissing?

Bellator 21: Toby Imada vs Pat Curran set for June 10 lightweight final Posted: 21 May 2010 09:58 AM PDT HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (May 21, 2010) - South Florida native and MMA rising star Pat Curran will return to fight in his home state for the first time next month since two upset victories in Bellator Fighting Championships' Season 2 Lightweight Tournament catapulted him into the tournament's championship round and national MMA stardom. Curran, who grew up in Delray Beach and Boca Raton, will face off with MMA veteran and 2009 "Sumbission of the Year" title-holder Toby Imada during the Main Event fight when Bellator returns for the fourth time to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on June 10th. The winner will take home Bellator's Season 2 155-lbs. Tournament title and will become the No.1 contender to reigning Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. The much-anticipated Curran-Imada fight is just part of the eight-fight Bellator 21 card, which will also be televised LIVE on FOX Sports Net and during special taped highlight shows on NBC and Telemundo. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets and at Ticketmaster.com. "We can't wait to return to South Florida and bring our Lightweight Tournament Championship fight with us," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebeney. "I am especially happy that Pat Curran will have a chance to fight in front of his hometown crowd. He has gone on a tremendous run in our Lightweight Tournament and has made a substantial name for himself in the world of MMA. His fight against Toby Imada, a crafty MMA veteran, is going to be a great fight to watch and a great Main Event at the Hard Rock." Curran, who now lives and trains outside of Chicago , was standout wrestler for Olympic Heights Community High School, finishing fourth at the state finals during his senior year. After graduating, he studied for and received his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in South Florida before being convinced by his older cousin, MMA legend Jeff "Big Frog" Curran, to move to Illinois to begin a career in MMA. He took his first pro fight in February of 2008 and quickly compiled an impressive record of 9-3. He made his Bellator debut in impressive and dramatic fashion on April 15th in Chicago with a first-round KO of Georges Saint-Pierre training partner Mike Ricci. Curran then followed that up with one of the biggest upsets of the year in all of MMA, a unanimous decision win over superstar Roger Huerta in Bellator's Lightweight Tournament semifinal round Boston. The wins have helped turn Curran into an overnight star. Imada (25-12) is perhaps best known for the remarkable inverted triangle choke submission that he used to dispatch the heavily favored Jorge Masvidal during the semifinals of Bellator's Season 1 Lightweight Tournament. The submission has now been viewed more than 700,000 times on YouTube and won Imada "Submission of the Year" honors from nearly every MMA media outlet. But the submission has also served to overshadow the magnitude of an impressive three-year run that has seen Imada win 11 of his last 12 pro fights including a Bellator quarterfinal submission of WEC veteran James Krause and a semifinal submission of up-and-comer Carey Vanier. Details on the other seven fights will be released in the coming weeks. Matt Lindland: Kevin Casey should stop rapping and hanging out with douchebags Posted: 21 May 2010 08:40 AM PDT Props: MMA Fighting Quoteworthy:
Former Olympic wrestling silver medalist and aging mixed martial arts veteran Matt Lindland hopes to stage an intervention with Kevin Casey after their Strikeforce Challengers 8 main event from the Rose Garden tonight (May 21) on Showtime. "The Law" has been broken in his previous two fights and may not have much left to offer MMA's big leagues; however, a win over the aspiring rapper might give his career a new set of legs. Anyone taking Spencer's "bro" in this one? Or is Lindland too experienced?

UFC 115: Will we see the best Rich Franklin vs the best Chuck Liddell? Posted: 21 May 2010 07:45 AM PDT "Ace" seems to think so, in his conversation with the Springfield News Sun:
The former middleweight champion returns from a self-imposed sabbatical to take on another former division kingpin when he throws hands with Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 on June 12 in Vancouver. Like Franklin, "The Iceman" may not be the fighter he once was, but that doesn't mean these two veterans can't put forth an exciting battle from the GM Place. Anyone expecting a gritty, three round war? Or a flash KO to open the first frame?
Posted: 21 May 2010 07:40 AM PDT Ryan "Lion" Diaz, challenger to Mike "The Hulk" Easton, has been diagnosed with parotitis, an infection that blocks the salivary glands causing swelling and pain, that will prevent him from competing at UWC 8: Judgment Day on May 22, UWC CEO Marcello Foran announced today. "Ryan became ill shortly before or during his return to the States after spending that last two months training in Thailand for his fight with Mike Easton. Upon his return he visited the emergency room where he was diagnosed with infected salivary glands," said Foran. "We were hopeful that he would recover in time to fight, but unfortunately that hasn't been the case. I know he's very disappointed, as we all are that he can't fight Mike this Saturday night. Both camps understand that these situations can occur and are simply out of anyone's control. We wish Ryan the best and hope he gets healthy soon." The event still has a world-class lineup of nine fights led by the flyweight showdown between Greg Jackson MMA's high-flying John "The Magician" Dodson and undefeated Jesse "Mountain Man" Riggleman fighting out of MMA Institute.
Former Green Power Ranger actor-turned-MMA artist Jason "Fearless" Frank and top local 145-pound prospect Justin Hickey fighting out of Lloyd Irvin Mixed Martial Arts/Gold Medal Grappling will make their highly-anticipated UWC debuts. Popular UWC fighters returning to action are Lloyd Irvin teammates Timothy "The Good Soldier" Woods and Ron "Choir Boy" Stallings, plus unbeaten female fan favorite Iman "The Predator" Achhal. UFC Quick Quote: Ricardo Almeida asked for Matt Hughes immediately after the Renzo Gracie fight Posted: 21 May 2010 05:55 AM PDT
Ricardo Almeida tells the gang at Versus.com that he's eager to face Matt Hughes in their welterweight showdown at the upcoming UFC 117 event planned for Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. "Cachorrao" is the winner of three straight, including a submission win over Matt Brown at UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" last March. His celebration was short lived however, as his Master and longtime friend Renzo Gracie was stopped by the flinty farmboy at UFC 112: "Invincible" just a month later. Is Almeida the last chance for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to exact revenge on Matt Hughes? Or will the "Big Dog" get housebroken in Oakland? |
