The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 11: Episode 6 recap and discussion

Posted: 05 May 2010 04:51 PM PDT

Tuf-liddell-1_medium

Episode six of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 11 gets underway with some unhappy campers in the Ortiz camp. They're down 1-4 in the elimination bouts and looking to play the blame game. Kyacey Uscola thinks it starts at the top and questions some of Tito's training methods.

Over at the gym, Chuck returns from his "prior obligations" and Team Liddell is all smiles.

The Minority Report takes a different slant on the workouts under Coach Ortiz. Jamie Yager thinks he's doing a great job and that some of the complainers just don't know what real work is. Tito hears the talk and rallies the troops for a pep talk and calls out Uscola for his bitching.

Coaches Challenge!

This season it's dodgeball. As usual, the winning coach gets $10,000 and $1,000 goes to each team member. Rich Attonito swears he saw smoke coming off Chuck's balls. I'm leaving that one alone. Game 1 to Team Liddell. Then Game 2. The end of Game 3 and Chuck and Tito are the last men standing. Just like in the cage, Chuck takes him out.

Just what Team Ortiz needs, another demoralizing loss.

At the fight announcement, Chuck picks Court McGee to fight Nick Ring, who goes into the staredown with some sort of bizarre Too Wong Foo finger wagging technique. Dana thinks it's a mismatch but admits Chuck is doing just fine without his advice.

McGee talks about his desire to fight and how getting beat up is one of the joys of competing. Assistant Coach John Hackleman thinks he's got the skills to beat Godzilla.

Somewhere in Japan, the ghost of Tomoyuki Tanaka executes an epic facepalm.

Speaking of giant lizards, James Hammertree gets dropped awkwardly in the gym and can't move. He's wailing in pain and the medics have to take him out on a stretcher. Not a pretty site, especially for anyone who's ever competed.

Nick Ring is happy to be back in mixed martial arts after a recovering from a severe knee injury. Coach Ortiz talks about why Ring was his number one pick and is predicting a first round finish. Both fighters make weight without incident.

James Hammertree returns with a swollen back but fortunately doesn't have any serious damage.

Prior to the fight, Coach Hackleman tell McGee that Ring doesn't have any knockout power and that he made a name for himself crushing cans in Canada. Ring apologizes ahead of time for what he's about to do in the cage.

Elimination bout #6: Court McGee (9-1) vs. Nick Ring (10-0)

Round 1: Jab lands for McGee who then takes Ring down. He does very little to advance his position and draws a few warnings from the ref for inactivity. Ring gets to his feet. They trade kicks. Then hands. Then kicks again. They lock up in the center of the cage and knee each other for a bit. They separate and Ring stuffs a takedown, locking in a guillotine then spinning to take his opponent's back. McGee turns out of it but Ring lands in half guard. He's busier on top than McGee was but conversely McGee is busier on bottom than Ring was. Round one ends with Ring on top, who probably takes the round.

Round 2: Both fighters trade cautiously. Spinning back kick for McGee is an airball. Neither fighter seems particularly eager to close the distance. McGee finally ties him up and then breaks away. Both sides throwing a lot of leather but not much damage being done. Ugly shoot by McGee gets nothing. Ring working the legs fairly well, McGee working the head in return. Ring lumbers in like Frankenstein and gets wrist control only to let it go. They start hugging and go to the cage. Exhaustion has reared its ugly head. Ring lands a few kicks at the bell as McGee peppers the head. Close fight.

Nick Ring defeats Court McGee via majority decision

After the fight, Ring is disappointed that he couldn't finish the fight. Coach Liddell can't comprehend how McGee lost the second round. Dana agrees but also says you can't ever let it go to the judges. Liddell hears that and blows his stack -- staring a hole right through Dana (who immediately sits down).

Stay tuned next week as Nick Ring faces a possible injury, Seth Baczynski and Joe Henle do battle in the final elimination fight and the wildcard spot is finally filled. Who will it be?

UFC Quick Quote: Jason Brilz ready to test himself against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

"I got home, put the kids in the bath and thought, you know, I'm going to have that beer now. I cracked the beer, had about two sips, then a Virginia number pops up on my phone. It's Joe Silva. I was like, well, I guess I'm not going to be able to finish this beer. At this point in my career, I don't really care who I fight. I just want to be tested. And Little Nog, you know, he'll definitely test me. What the heck. I'm thinking, co-main event in Vegas? Sign me up. Just like in my other fights, I'm going to come right at him. I'm going to worry about his game, but I'm not going to deviate from my game to accommodate him. I'm going to throw my game plan out there. If it works, great. If it doesn't, well, I haven't thought that far."

Late replacement Jason Brilz talks to MMA Fighting about filling in for the injured Forrest Griffin at the upcoming UFC 114 event on May 29 in Las Vegas. The Nebraska-based fighter has compiled an impressive 18-2-1 record and has notable wins over veterans such as Jason MacDonald, Alex Schoenauer and Tim Boetsch, among others. Is it enough to prepare him for the hands (and jits) of "Lil' Nog?" Anyone thinking upset? Predictions, please.

NFL star Brian Cushing details his MMA training experience

"It's been going great. We've been doing it three or four times a week. Just the conditioning and the kind of training that we've been doing is so unique and everything has really worked out. It's been a great off-season. The biggest thing is Jay [Glazer] understands the role he's taking as a guy he's training. He understands there's a ton of responsibility and accountability the coaches are giving him to train his players. He knows the situation, he knows we're not professional fighters, he knows we're professional football players. That's what he's training us for. Not for the fights but to keep us healthy, to keep us safe, and to get us more flexible and more aware of our surroundings out there on the field. I don't see why not [more NFL players would adopt MMA training]. Not only is it very good for you, but it's kind of a release now and it's different from training all year ‘round, lifting weights, and doing all that kind of stuff. Now you can go into the gym and do this and basically get a three or four hour workout done in one hour with this kind of stuff."

Houston Texans All-Pro linebacker Brian Cushing is one of the many elite NFL players to have picked up mixed martial arts training as part of their regular off-season workout routine. Conducted by MMAthletics co-founders Jay Glazer and Randy Couture, Cushing claims that the training translates especially well to football and he fully expects more and more NFL players to join the fray. Even though he's working out like a mixed martial artist, he has every intention to remain purely a football player and credits Glazer for knowing how far to push athletes that come in to his gym with a football background. Look out AFC South division... Cushing is coming!

UFC on Versus 2: Mark Munoz vs Yushin Okami set for August 1 in Salt Lake City

Posted: 05 May 2010 12:01 PM PDT

A competitive middleweight bout in the form of Mark Munoz vs. Yushin Okami has been agreed upon for UFC on Versus 2. MMA Weekly reported the fight which will take place on August 1 from Salt Lake City, Utah earlier today.

Munoz has been perfect (3-0) since his 185-pound debut against Nick Catone at UFC 102: "Couture vs. Nogueira" in August 2009. It wasn't a convincing win, however, earning a split decision nod from two of the three judges sitting ringside.

He didn't make the same mistake his next time out, smashing Ryan Jensen via verbal submission (punches) at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" earlier this year. Now 8-1, Mark most recently defeated Kendall Grove in what was a thrilling come-from-behind win at UFC 112: "Invincible."

Okami (24-5) got back in the win column at UFC Fight Night: "Florian vs. Gomi" as he defeated Lucio Linhares with a second round technical knockout (doctor's stoppage). Yushin had suffered only the second loss in his last eleven fights his last time out against now number one middleweight contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun."

The well-rounded Japanese fighter has come close to a couple title shots over the years only to have them taken away from him by either a loss or a less-than exciting performance. A win over Munoz could very well put him back on track toward that goal.

Devin Price: Don King is Mayorga's boxing promoter -- Shine Fights is his MMA promoter

Quoteworthy:

"The May 15 MMA event Worlds Collide: "Mayorga vs. Thomas" will go forward without a doubt. Shine Fights has a valid and exclusive promotional contract with Ricardo Mayorga for mixed martial arts. We are pleased to offer both MMA fans and boxing fans a great night of MMA action on Saturday, May 15. When we announced this fight I said that we think Mayorga's fans are just that, his fans, and that they will follow him to MMA. Our target is to convert many boxing fans into fans of both sports. We are his MMA promoter."

Shine Fight Promotions CEO Devin Price responded today via a press release to famed boxing promoter Don King's threat that he intended do everything in his power to ensure the May 15 "Worlds Collide" event would not take place as Shine Fights was in breach of an existing contract between Ricardo Mayorga and King. Price reassures MMA fans that the main event between Mayorga and former UFC fighter Din Thomas will indeed go on as planned citing the fact that Shine Fights is Mayorga's mixed martial arts promoter and Don King is Mayorga's boxing promoter, and with that, no contractual stipulations or terms were violated. But unfortunately, something tells me we haven't heard the last from King on this topic.

UFC 116: Stephan Bonnar vs Krzysztof Soszynski rematch set for July 3 in Las Vegas

Posted: 05 May 2010 09:41 AM PDT

Ept_sports_mma_experts-342031138-1266738038_medium_medium_medium

Former Ultimate Fighters Stephan Bonnar (11-7) and Krzysztof Soszynski (19-9-1) will finally get a chance to settle some unfinished business when the two light heavyweights collide in a rematch at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin," which is scheduled for July 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Bonnar wasn't happy with the TKO loss he suffered at the hands (or head) of "The Polish Experiment" when the pair threw leather at February's UFC 110 event from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

"The American Psycho" blames referee John Sharp for missing an inadvertent headbutt that busted him open in the third round of their 205-pound war, causing Bonnar to leak all over himself, Soszynski and the better part of the Octagon floor.

He recently lost his appeal to have the ruling reversed to a technical draw based on the nature of the stoppage.

Soszynski has been gracious throughout the ordeal and like Bonnar, wants his win to come from being the better fighter, which he may get the chance to prove (again) when the July 3 rematch comes to fruition.

While UFC President Dana White has already gone on record about keeping Bonnar on the payroll, the once formidable contender still has a lot to lose after dropping three straight bouts.

Conversely, Soszynski has won four out of five since his UFC debut in December of 2008 and could continue his rise through the light heavyweight ranks if he can finish what he started back in February.

Expect another war from these two.

UFC Quick Quote: An improved Paul Daley will send Koscheck home with his teeth in a bag

Posted: 05 May 2010 09:24 AM PDT

Kos-daley-romo-3_medium

"Koscheck has come out with a statement he's gonna now take me down and choke me out, as if that wasn't his plan from the moment he signed the contract. Of course he wants to take me down as soon as he possibly can. That's his strength, that's what he thinks is my weakness, so unless the bleach has gone to his brain, that's what he's gonna do. Even when he was saying he was standing with me and all that, I was hearing it and thinking ‘Of course you are... riiiiiiight!' It kind of annoys me that people keep asking me if my takedown defense has improved since fighting Jake Shields two years ago. Of course it has. I lost a fight, so of course I want to improve; I always want to get better. On the night against Shields I was pretty bad; I don't even like talking about it. That wasn't really me at my best, and I am still mad about it, but I moved on and I've worked hard to improve. On Saturday, all I am going for is another win. I will leave the Octagon with another KO win under my belt, and Kos will leave with his teeth in a bag."

Trash-talking teeth trouncer Paul Daley continues his verbal assault on UFC 113 opponent Josh Koscheck in anticipation of their welterweight match-up this Saturday night (May 8) from the Bell Centre in Montreal. "Semtex" blogs about his defeat at the hands of Jake Shields in Elite XC but vows to show how far his takedown defense has come since that bout over two years ago. The question is, if the big-fisted Brit can't land the knockout punch, does he have enough tools left in his arsenal to keep it competitive?

UFC on Versus 2: Brian Stann vs Mike Massenzio on tap for Salt Lake City

Posted: 05 May 2010 08:41 AM PDT

Stann-massenzio_medium

Former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Brain Stann will make his first appearance as a middleweight when he faces off against Mike Massenzio at UFC on Versus 2. Heavy.com first reported the bout which is set to take place on August 1 from EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The former Marine quickly made a name for himself in the MMA community using some serious power to dispatch of the first six opponents of his career in the first round via strikes. After suffering his first loss in a rematch with Steve Cantwell at WEC 35, the WEC's light heavyweight division was absorbed into the UFC, where Stann hasn't enjoyed nearly the same success as he did in the UFC's sister promotion.

Now 8-3, Brian has gone just 2-2 inside the Octagon, losing to Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 97 while defeating Steve Cantwell in their trilogy fight at UFC Fight Night: "Diaz vs. Guillard" and Rodney Wallace at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. Stann's less than stellar ground game was thoroughly exploited his last time out at UFC 109 against top prospect Phil Davis.

Mike Massenzio (11-3) brings a strong grappling pedigree to the table having been crowned champion in numerous Grappler's Quest and North American Grappling Associtation (N.A.G.A.) tournaments as well as the 2004 Junior College National Wrestling Tournament.

"The Master of Disaster" has gone 1-1 in the UFC but hasn't fought since UFC 92 where he lost to C.B. Dollaway due to numerous injuries and bout cancellations.

UFC on Versus 2 will be the second such event on the cable network, hence the number 2, and is expected to feature contests between Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko as well as Takanori Gomi and Joe Stevenson.

Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for information on UFC on Versus 2 as it breaks.
