Shine Fights weigh in results for Worlds Collide: 'Mayorga vs. Thomas'

Posted: 14 May 2010 09:05 PM PDT

Shine-banner_medium

The official weigh-in event for Shine Fights 3: "Worlds Collide" took place earlier this evening at the Big Apple Restaurant & Sports Pub in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

For the most part, each of the 16 fighters set to compete at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville tomorrow night, including main event participants Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga and Din "Dinyero" Thomas, were successful in hitting their respective weight limits without too much trouble, according to MMASpot.net.

The former boxing champion Mayorga will make his mixed martial arts debut in the headlining bout opposite Thomas, who is a nine-time UFC veteran. There is clearly no love lost between the two men, as the pushing and shoving from last month's press conference, continued at today's event.

Today's extracurricular activities weren't quite as entertaining as what went down at the press conference, but it's clear that these two can't wait for tomorrow night.

While that won't come as much of a shock to most,  one surprise at the weigh ins was the absence of main card fighter Nick Thompson. Apparently "The Goat" suffered an injury in training this week, and he'll be replaced by his teammate, journeyman Derrick Noble, who has 40 professional fights to his credit.

Check out the complete "Worlds Collide" weigh-in results after the jump:

Main event:

160 lbs.: Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (159.8) vs. Din "Dinyero" Thomas (158.6)

Main card (Televised):

190 lbs.: Murilo "Ninja" Rua (191) vs. David Heath (191.2)
170 lbs.: Eduardo Pamplona (168.2) vs. Derrick Noble (169.2)
205 lbs.: Alexandre "Cacareco" Ferreira (204.2) vs. Jamal "The Suit" Patterson (205.8)
180 lbs.: Braulio "Carcara" Estima (179.4) vs. Rick Hawn (175.2)
155 lbs.: Luiz Azeredo (152.8) vs. Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett (155.8)
150 lbs.: Mario "Serious" Stapel (149) vs. Zac George (150)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Roger Carroll (183.8) vs. Paulo Souza (185.8)

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight night (Saturday, May 15), which is slated to air at 9 p.m. ET on pay-per-view from North Carolina.

Check in early and often -- it should be an exciting night of fights! In the meantime, feel free to share your Shine Fights-related thoughts and predictions in the comments section below.

Bigfoot Silva: Andrei Arlovski is coming off two KO losses -- and I plan to exploit this

Posted: 14 May 2010 03:44 PM PDT

Bigfoot-silva_medium

"After my fight against (Fabricio) Werdum I started to do my own camp and now I have a more specific training for my fights. I’m ready to fight standing and on the ground. Arlovski’s ground game is neither horrible nor refined. I’m feeling very well on my feet. Arlovski comes off two KO losses and I plan to exploit this even knowing he’s a striker. I can also take him to the mat but you will see the 'Bigfoot' of my first eight fights. I’m trying to be more aggressive with more attitude compared to my last bout against Werdum. I want to say thank you to my fans, family and sponsors that gave me support for this preparation."

The one and only Elite XC Heavyweight Champion Antonio Silva prepares for his 265-pound mash up against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski tomorrow night (May 15) from the Scottstrade Center in St. Louis. "Bigfoot" promises a return to form, following a disappointing loss to Fabricio Werdum on CBS last November. Can "The Pitbull" be housebroken by the hard-hitting Brazilian on Saturday night? Or will Arlovski rise from the ashes and return to heavyweight relevance at the expense of Silva? Predictions please.

Scott Coker: All fighters competing at Strikeforce 'Heavy Artillery' will undergo drug testing

Posted: 14 May 2010 02:54 PM PDT

Coker-test_medium

Props: Carmichael Dave (via MMA Convert)

Quoteworthy:

"In California, Nevada and other states drug testing is mandatory or sometimes it’s random…We stand aside because the commission’s doing the tests. The commission here [in Missouri] is drug testing and it will be random, and what we’ve decided to do is test all the athletes ourselves. That will happen tomorrow after the weigh-ins. Without a doubt all these fighters have to be clean, otherwise we’re going to have a problem, it’s going to be an issue. And Alistair, believe me, he’s fought in California twice and he’s tested clean both times…Let the guy go fight, prove himself, innocent before guilty, right? We hired a lab here in town. The lab’s going to do the testing for us tomorrow after the weigh-ins. It’s something we felt was the right thing to do and all the fighters including Alistair had no problem with it. Let it be what it’s going to be."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker doesn't want there to be any unanswered questions following his return to St. Louis for "Heavy Artillery" on May 15. The commitment to drug testing by the Missouri Athletic Commission has been spotty at best, so Coker has made preparations to test each fighter following the weigh ins on Friday night. In a best case scenario, where every fighter tests clean, will fans finally be satisfied that certain heavyweight fighters are "all natural?" Or do random and unannounced tests need to be implemented to justify fighter physiques to some of the more fickle fans? What's your take Maniacs?

CHICAGO, Ill. (May 14, 2010) - Just five weeks into its 24-show engagement with FOX Sports Net, Bellator Fighting Championships has set a new standard for MMA programming on the network, outperforming the ratings of other previous MMA shows on FSN by a remarkable 46 percent among the coveted "men 25 to 54" demographic.

In addition, Bellator has seen its own ratings increase dramatically since making its FSN debut on April 8 with Bellator 13. Total viewership numbers for last Thursday's Bellator 17 show were up 184 percent from the debut show four weeks earlier.

"As the Bellator tournament moves forward and the great fights keep happening, we are really excited to see the buzz building around our brand as more and more viewers tune in each," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "We are proud of the viewership numbers that we've been drawing to our weekly shows and are confident that our ratings will continue to grow during the remaining seven weeks of Bellator Season 2 and during our twelve Bellator Season 3 shows beginning in August."

In addition to the 46-percent increase among men ages 25 to 54, Bellator's ratings are also up 51 percent among all viewers' ages 25 to 54 when compared to the three MMA shows that previously aired on FSN; M1 Fighting Championships, Affliction and the International Fight League.

UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre likes Josh Koscheck, thinks he's the perfect villain

Posted: 14 May 2010 11:05 AM PDT

"I liked the comment that he made at the end [of his UFC 113 fight with Daley]. It was awesome. He's a perfect villain. I like him even more cause of this. I like Josh Koscheck, he's awesome. It's going to build up the fight better saying bad things to each other [laughs]. It's normal. He's confident coming into that fight. He's a fighter. For sure if he doesn't think he's going to win the fight, he's not going to take the fight. It's going to be up to me to prove him wrong. I put myself in his shoes with the people booing him. It was just very funny what he said. As long as it's a fair fight and there is no biased judges, everything is fair. I'm agreed to do it wherever it is. I don't care... He's a different fighter than when I fought him the first time. The first time I had the element of surprise. I was able to take him out of his comfort zone by using my wrestling skills. He didn't know how my wrestling was. This time I don't have this element of surprise, but I'm going to have to use another element of surprise you guys might find out in the fight."

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre talks to MMA Weekly about the man who will be challenging him for his belt come December, Josh Koscheck. Of course the two gentlemen are going to share camera time on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, which is scheduled to premiere in September, and from the sounds of it, it appears "Rush" is going to get along with Josh just fine. GSP is never one to partake in too much extracurricular activities in the lead up to any fight, and it seems as though we're in for more of the same this time around. But with several months to go before they actually square off inside the Octagon, do you think Koscheck will be able to push the buttons of the champ and get him to engage in some pre-fight verbal warfare? Or, are we gonna be in for a relatively boring seven months, TUF included, as we head towards the welterweight title fight later this year? Opinions, please.

Strikeforce: 'Heavy Artillery' predictions, preview and analysis

Posted: 14 May 2010 09:02 AM PDT

Sf-ha-preview-2_medium

Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" is locked and loaded for Saturday, May 15, 2010 from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri, live on Showtime.

Remember: MMAmania.com will provide LIVE updates with blow-by-blow, round-by-round commentary of the main card action on fight night, which is slated to air on Showtime at 10 p.m. ET.

To get you primed for the impending violence I shall delve into each of the main card contests with some level of analysis, wit, and the usual charm.

The main attraction heading into this event is the return of Alistair Overeem to the United States to defend his Strikeforce heavyweight crown he captured in what seems like an eternity ago back in November 2007. He will square off with heavyweight contender Brett Rogers in the main event of the evening.

How will Overeem match up with a top flight heavyweight, arguably the toughest he's faced since moving to heavyweight full time in 2007?

More importantly, will Fedor Emelianenko take on the winner if he is able to get past Fabricio Werdum on June 26?

In another marquee heavyweight scrap former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will take on former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva, with both men coming off disappointing losses and looking to right the ship.

The rest of the main card includes what could potentially be a pair of #1 contender match ups in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, along with the anticipated arrival of jiu-jitsu ace Roger Gracie.

There will certainly be a lot of chatter on Sunday morning, likely dominated with a heavyweight-themed thread.

Alright, enough with the fluff lead in ... let's do this thing.

265 lbs.: Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem (32-11, 1 NC) vs. Brett "The Grim" Rogers (10-1)

Derek Bolender predicts: The Golden Glory God Alistair Overeem will set foot on US soil to defend his dusty Strikeforce belt he earned over two years ago with a victory over Paul Buentello.

That win kicked off his current seven fight donkey kong'ing streak over a murderer's row of gents including Lee Tae-Hyun, Tony Sylvester, and most recently, Kazuyuki Fujita, who ate a cranium busting knee a little over a minute into round one.

The hype train is certainly full speed ahead amidst the ever present Truman Show-esque steroid cloud following him diligently overhead.

And by "murderer's row" I meant the 09' Nats, not the 27' Yanks.

Brett Rogers is arguably the best heavyweight Overeem has faced in his career, unless you count guys like Badr Hari and company under K-1 rules.

Rogers will step into the cage, sans mohawk, and coming off his first career loss at the hands of the reigning heavyweight king of Phi WAMMA Jamma, Fedor Emelianenko.

What Rogers is going to do is what he always does - rely on his hands and his power. 100% of his wins have come via knockout. He's certainly not going to be actively pursuing takedowns, he's not going to be able to control Overeem in the clinch, and he's at a distinct disadvantage on the mat in a submission battle.

Consequently, I'm inclined to believe we'll see a glorified kickboxing match, but only one of these two men has certifiable K-1 level striking. That would be "The Reem."

Horse meat does a body good. And, with the Preakness Stakes on Saturday I'm predicting a great day for horse lovers all around. It's coincidental fate.

Prediction: Overeem via technical knockout

265 lbs.: Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski (15-7) vs. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (13-2)

Derek Bolender predicts: Arlovski's first rodeo in St. Louis lasted a mere 22 seconds courtesy of Brett Rogers this past June. Here's hoping his return visit lasts a bit longer, unless you're holding out hope the Vitor Ribeiro/Lyle Beerbohm undercard fight miraculously gets air time.

Like the Overeem/Rogers scrap I think we are in for predominantly a stand-up battle between these two giants. The first thing that comes to mind is Arlovski's glass chin, and for good reason. He has a history of not being able to take one on the chops whether it's from Rogers, Fedor Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia, or even Pedro Rizzo going way back. Jonathan Goulet probably thinks Arlovski has a questionable chin.

Silva is no doubt salivating at the opportunity to knock Arlovski's beard into the third row. Can you blame him? There likely isn't much more to his game plan than that.

Regardless, my gut says it's time for Arlovski to break his losing streak. The two previous times he had two-fight losing streaks in his career he rattled off winning streaks of six and five, respectively, thereafter.

Arlovski has the quicker hands and his boxing is crisper and more technical. Silva has never faced anymore with even better than average stand-up in his career.

Although Silva does have a 5" reach advantage Arlovski has faced guys with significant length in the past like Sylvia, and it was not a deciding factor in any of their three match-ups.

The sheer size and shape of Silva's dome piece would lead me to believe he's extremely hard to knockout. With that being said, he did get dropped in an exchange and pounded out by overweight King of the Cage veteran Eric Pele in 2006. The same man who forced his corner to throw in the towel against Dan Bobish, no less.

Furthermore, Arlovski's head movement can't be as bad as we've seen from him in the past could it?

Don't answer that. Arlovski's speed kills before he gets killed. +1 for Belarus.

Prediction: Arlovski via technical knockout

185 lbs.: Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (11-2, 1 NC) vs. Joey "Smokin'" Villasenor (27-6)

Derek Bolender predicts: This intriguing match-up could very well grant the winner a title shot against middleweight champion Jake Shields, or if he flees into the arms Dana White, another opponent for the vacant strap.

Let me come clean and say I was extremely impressed with Jacare's stand-up against Matt Lindland, regardless of the regressive state "The Law" currently finds himself in.

Jacare is clearly a great athlete and a quick learner. His movement was much more fluid and he looked extremely comfortable in exchanges. Don't get me wrong, he's still predominantly a jiu-jitsu wizard, but it was clearly evident he has made big strides with his stand-up.

Standing in the way of his potential title shot is well-rounded veteran and Greg Jackson product Joey Villasenor.

Villasenor has only fought three times since the beginning of 2008, although he has won all three and is on a four-fight win streak overall. He will look to keep this fight standing and avoid the jiu-jitsu prowess of Jacare. He's a solid boxer, uses his jab well, and likes to scramble. He will be seeking out exchanges and trying to bait Jacare into fighting his kind of fight.

At this stage, Jacare has proven enough to me that he can avoid danger on the feet and use his own strikes to set up takedowns. Villasenor does not have the best takedown defense in the world. Riki Fukada, "Ninja" Rua, and Evangelista Santos all were able to put him on his back with relative ease.

Having a submission stud like Jacare on top of you and trying to prevent him from improving his position and laying the foundation for impending submission attempts is not a favorable spot by any means. That's what I would call a precarious predicament. It's a tall task for Villasenor to continually defend properly off his back while his movements are being stifled. I'm confident Villasenor has been drilling this very instance on a consistent basis in New Mexico. I just don't think he'll have an answer when the lights go on.

Villasenor has only been submitted once in his entire career back in 2000 by a David Terrell armbar. He's a tough man to put away, but I think the Brazilian gets it done.

Prediction: Souza via submission

205 lbs.: Roger Gracie (2-0) vs. Kevin "The Monster" Randleman (17-14)

Derek Bolender predicts: In a past life Randleman was suplexing Fedor Emelianenko on his head and upsetting Mirko Cro Cop in his prime, but it hasn't been "Monster" mash for some time as the 38-year-old has dropped 9 of his last 12 fights.

He's lost his patented explosiveness and power and added Ruben Studdard-esque cardio to his arsenal. It's not a pretty combination.

Gracie, on the other hand, has very limited experience in MMA and has not fought since submitting Yuki Kondo under the Senogku banner in 2008.

His grappling resume is quite impressive. It includes a host of ADCC and jiu-jitsu world championship titles, including wins over names like Robert Drysdale, "Xande" Ribeiro, Fabricio Werdum, and Jacare.

Randleman must get a hold of Gracie's 6'4" frame and try to get him on his back early, hurt him with ground and pound, and end the fight before getting a limb ripped off. Clearly easier said than done, and I don't see this sequence coming to fruition.

What is more likely to happen is Gracie actively seeking one takedown after the other until he finally gets one, and it only will take one. If Ron Waterman submitted Randleman back in the day surely Gracie won't break a sweat once this hits the turf, right? The correct answer is yes. Once Gracie takes top position it is only a matter of time. There is more defense in an NBA All-Star game than there is in Randleman's submission game.

The long layoff should not be that big of a concern for Gracie as his fitness has to be only slightly better than Randleman's, who clearly won't set the bar too high. Grandpa Kev moves one step closer to finishing his career with a .500 record.

Prediction: Gracie via submission

205 lbs.: Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (8-2) vs. Antwain "The Juggernaut" Britt (11-3)

Derek Bolender predicts: A battle of two up-and-comers kicks off the televised card. Sadly, it could very well decide the next title challenger for Muhammad Lawal, as the divisional depth at light heavyweight is a bit anorexic.

In one corner you have a Muay Thai-based, Black House-trained striker in the form of Feijao. He suffered a disappointing loss to Mike Kyle last June in St. Louis, but followed it up with a dismantling of Aaron Rosa at the Strikeforce Challengers 5 event this past November in Kansas City.

Conversely, Britt suffered a bad loss of his own courtesy of Rodney Wallace under the VFC banner this past September. Like Feijao, he came back strong to record a TKO victory over Scott Lighty in December in his inaugural Strikeforce appearance.

This looks like a war on paper given the killer instinct mentality of both fighters, with the varied Muay Thai attack of Feijao, and the power punching and brute force of Britt.

Feijao is going to have to find an answer for the dynamite in Britt's hands. Whether that means getting inside and scoring points in the clinch, foot sweeping Britt to the ground from that position, or simply using an effective jab to keep him at distance.

If Feijao wants to go toe-to-toe and he neglects his jab or the head movement and footwork necessary to escape danger while pressured, he's probably in trouble. Britt is a handful when he's pressing forward. Antonio Mendes would concur.

The cardio of Feijao has also been an issue in the past, most notably in his loss to Kyle. In the second round of that fight the grappling had warn him out to the point where he was flat footed and a stationary target once the fight moved back to the feet. Kyle took full advantage of the situation and recorded the knockout.

For some reason when two dangerous finishers get in the cage together it tends to not live up to expectations. I actually think both guys will probably do a great job of depleting their cardio throughout the first round and it will slow down tremendously towards the second half of the fight. I'll also say a late Britt takedown the crowd sees coming a mile away is the proverbial nail in the coffin in the third.

Prediction: Britt via unanimous decision

That's all she wrote.

Brett Rogers: Don't hold the Fedor loss against me -- I deserve this title shot

"I definitely feel like I deserve this title when it comes down to it. It just kind of makes sense. I just want to get out there and prove it to the world that I’m getting that title. It is what it is. I don’t care what anybody else says. It has to be a win-win situation for me because Alistair has kind of been out of the mix in America for a long time. I’m not just speaking for myself, but I’m speaking for all the other heavyweights out there gunning for this dude ... People are just holding the Fedor loss against me. People think I don’t deserve it, so I’m feeling a lot of pressure to do anything to prove it. I know for a fact that if I have a second shot at (Fedor) it definitely will be a lot different. I’m not looking past Alistair, but I feel it’s going to be a tougher second fight. I want that rematch with Fedor and it’s definitely going to look a lot better when I get in there and snatch this title and get this second shot."

-- Strikeforce heavyweight wrecking ball Brett Rogers hopes to finally bring balance to the convoluted title picture in the Strikeforce 265 lb. division when he meets current champion Alistair Overeem at "Heavy Artillery" on Saturday night (May 15) in St. Louis. "The Grim" is frustrated that "Demolition Man" has been holding the belt hostage while he dabbles in the Japanese kickboxing scene and wants to settle their verbal spat once and for all. Can the former tire mechanic overcome the horsemeat-powered striking of Golden Glory's star pupil? Or will "The Reem" send him back to Sam's Club?

Rampage Jackson: Rashad Evans was a TUF 10 coach because Lyoto Machida couldn't speak English

"I would have preferred to have done The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) against Machida to fix the problem back in the day, from square one, just 'X' Rashad out because he don't got the damn belt, but Machida's English is not so good so I get stuck having to fight Rashad and he's all cocky thinking he did something good because he's on The Ultimate Fighter but like dude, you just got knocked the hell out! You're on The Ultimate Fighter by default because the dude that knocked you out don't speak English bro. Don't be coming here acting like that. This is the type of thing I'm dealing with. It's just annoying actually."

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson has his sights set on a "Shogun" Rua rematch from their PRIDE days with the assumption that he flattens former opposing TUF 10 coach Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas. "Rampage" skipped town on a UFC 107 fight against "Sugar" to film his role as B.A. Baracus in the upcoming A-Team movie. Was Jackson cheated out of his chance to face Machida because of the language barrier? Or was facing Evans the right move for him at that point in his career?

MMAmania.com Second Annual Fan Trip: The UFC 113 Montreal Experience

Posted: 14 May 2010 07:04 AM PDT

P5080534_medium

My arrival at the airport introduced me to the diversity of Montreal.

Different pieces of various languages flew past my ears as I made my way through a microcosm of the world. Montreal is an interesting blend of a contemporary urban setting with some old world history present in its architecture and native culture.

And the women are hot!

"Are you in Montreal for business or for pleasure ?" - Customs agent.

"For the UFC fight this weekend." - OJR.

"Business or pleasure, sir ?" - Customs agent.

"Pleasure.  Actually, I am hoping to get GSP's picture.  He is a great champion." - OJR.

He immediately relaxed, chatted me up about GSP's greatness and warmly wished me a good time in his native city.

I had arrived for the Second Annual MMAmania.com Fan Trip.

Meeting the Maniacs

Bigger Zino, Mac, Jay, Yan117 and myself met up for the first time and made our way to a local bar.

During the trip to the bar I managed to debate the Chicago Bulls franchise with Mac, discuss organization as a foundation for success with BZ, ask Yan cultural questions about MTL and pointed out all the beautiful French Canadian ass to Jay.  It was like a typical Mania thread in person.

During our bar conversation I noticed that Mac is a sports nut who loves his son and will not be shy about that fact.  Yan is courteous, humble and proud of his heritage.  BZ is an interesting talker who can engage you in a variety of topics without missing a beat.

Jay is soft spoken, quiet and unassuming.  Being a Brock fan I expected Jay to communicate with grunts while drool ran down his chin.  I noticed myself staring down the shirt of a blonde bartender with a huge rack.  What can I say, I am a shallow bastard.

UFC 113 Fight Night

Our seats were elevated with an almost dead center view of the cage.  It was a great location.  Credit goes to Jay for suggesting that section.  It definitely enhanced the experience of being there live.  Absolutely no binoculars were needed.  A huge screen hanging from the roof gave us an alternate view if the fighters positioned themselves in an obstructed view.

Jason MacDonald vs. John Salter

The MacDonald fight injury was the most horrible thing that I have ever seen in person.   I have to give credit to MacDonald for having an unbelievable pain threshold.   If that was me I would have blacked out like a little girl.  The fans were stunned silent when the ref waved off the fight.

After the TKO announcement the Canadian fans showed their class by applauding and cheering for MacDonald as he was carried out.  I think his MMA career is done.  I really hope that I am wrong.

Mike Guymon vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

This fight was very entertaining.  Both fighters displayed alot of endurance, skilled grappling and mixed striking.  When the fight was over Guymon was overcome with emotion and began to cry.  Rogan interviewed him with a big shit eating grin on his face.

I could not help but feel that Rogan was somehow mocking this guy.  Guymon admitted that it took him 10 years to break into the UFC.  I will give anyone a pass for being emotional after dedicating a decade to achieve a dream.  I hope to see Guymon fight again soon.

Joey Beltran vs. Tim Hague

The only interesting thing about this fight was that the Mexicutioner had a goatee that looked like it was glued on with stray dog hairs.  Poor Hague was doing his best imitation of a punching bag as "Boobies" Beltran peppered him with jabs while riding his bicycle.  Worst fight I have ever seen in the UFC.

Jonathan Goulet vs. Marcus Davis

Goulet looked good for a bit and then got KO'ed.  Same old story.  As Jay said,  "Goulet looks good until he gets punched."   Sorry, Goulet fans.  Um...who am I kidding?  What fans?

YouTube Star vs. Matt Mitrione

As compassionate and classy as the Canadian fans tend to be, they are no better than American fans when it comes to Kimbo Slice.  Apparently, idiocy is a world wide condition.  The arena erupted when Kimbo was introduced.  It was so loud I thought that GSP was an active member of Kimbo's entourage.  People were exclaiming what a good MMA'ist Kimbo was and how he would take Mitrione apart.

As soon as Kimbo lost I jumped up to my feet, clapped my hands in an obnoxious manner and screamed -

"Go back to Youtube and take your fucking fans with you!"

You could hear a pin drop in my half of the section after that.  No one challenged me.  I am an intimidating mofo.

Alan Belcher vs. Patrick Cote

BZ started a chant for the hometown guy as soon as RD 1 started...

"COTE! COTE! COTE! COTE!  COOOTEEE!  COOOTEEE!"  Rinse and repeat.

The entire section soon followed his lead...

"COTE! COTE! COTE! COTE!  COOOTEEE!  COOOTEEE!"  "COTE! COTE! COTE! COTE!  COOOTEEE!  COOOTEEE!"  "COTE! COTE! COTE! COTE!  COOOTEEE!  COOOTEEE!"

I hoped for a spectacular Cote KO because I really dislike riots.  Plus I had a nice shirt on.

After Cote lost, the combination of disbelief and pain was obvious on BZ and Jay's faces.  I offered my condolences and nodded in sympathy as I listened to theories about illegal pile drivers (I thought Belcher won fair and square).

Discretion was definitely the better part of valor.

Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley

After Kos was done milking the illegal knee from Daley, one fan in particular decided to start a 'FUCK YOU KOSCHECK' chant.  It caught on like wildfire.  Canadian fans are rowdy, eh?  After the Daley sucker punch Kos kept his cool and lip synched a very funny 'Fuck You' to Daley.

I saw Dana White come into the Octagon and read Daley the riot act.  Daley's body language conveyed anything but humility or embarrassment at his actions.  I immediately commented to Jay that Daley's UFC stint was over at that moment.  Kos' post fight speech was very amusing.  I think he enjoys wearing the black hat.

"Shogun" Rua vs. Lyoto Machida

Shogun was clearly the fan favorite.  His cheers were louder and more sustained.  I can confirm that bandwagon morons who pay $50.00 for a cheesy Shogun shirt have a talent for making alot of noise.  Machida was winning the 1st round until he decided to become the aggressor and threw that high knee to the body.  A major mistake as Shogun countered and got the impressive KO.

Despite being a Machida fan I stood up and applauded for Shogun.  It was a challenge avoiding all the boners from the "Shogun fans" sitting behind me.  No bitterness here, though.  Losing to a badass like Shogun is acceptable.  Machida will be back.  No doubt.

Meeting Matt Hamill

After the fights were over BZ and myself decided to do a bit of carousing.  We made our way to a deli and we saw Matt Hamill having a friendly conversation with a table full of customers.   Matt accepted all autograph requests and pictures with a smile on his face.  He also invited people to head over to a pub.  BZ and I joked about how much of a kickback Matt would get for constantly mentioning the pub's name.

BZ managed to ask Matt a question :   "So Matt you going to have any problems with Jardine?"  - BZ.

"Don't even worry about it...I got this."  - Matt.

Hilarious.  Matt left the deli about 20 minutes later to a round of applause.  BZ and I left and made our way to the strip clubs.  Word of advice...do not attempt to go to a strip club in MTL after a UFC event.  BZ and I waited in line for 10 -15 minutes in 2 separate locations.

Between watching guys cutting the line, the doorman arguing with customers and observing a drunken "Shogun fan" almost fall backward down a flight of stairs, BZ and I had enough and left.  We headed for the pub that Matt mentioned earlier in order to drown our sorrows.  We sat next to a group of rocket scientists who decided to throw their sunglasses in the large tub of beer that they were drinking from.

They spotted Matt and invited him over for some drinks.  Matt accomodated them and even posed for a group picture.  And then this little gem from out of the blue:     "And Matt I just want to tell you that Jon Jones is a fucking faggot.  Fuck Jon Jones.  And that's all I'm gonna say, that's all I've got to say."  - random drunk guy.    "Ugh...okay dude... WHOA !!!!"  - Matt.

Despite the drunk guy's crush on Jon Jones, Matt stayed with the group and joked around with them.   BZ and I finished our drinks and began to head out.  Matt stopped me before I got to the exit and thanked me for stopping by the pub.  He then offered his hand.  I shook it in disbelief.  He did the same with BZ.  He remembered us from the deli earlier that night and went out of his way to be polite.  Unbelievable.   I was actually moved by his gesture.

Until Next Time, eh?

So I woke up to the sound of a knock on my hotel door on Sunday morning.  Mac, BZ and Jay wanted to stop by and say goodbye before they left.  I sighed in relief because I thought they wanted to check me out in my underwear.  I don't blame them though because I am a sexy man.

We analyzed the previous night's fights and decided that we should post our collective experience for our fellow Maniacs.  They are a cool bunch of guys and I would be happy to hang out with them again.  Special thanks to Yan for also taking time out of his schedule and hanging out with us.

Thanks for reading!
