Bellator 19 results: Soto wins, Hornbuckle and Askren advance to welterweight tournament finals

Posted: 20 May 2010 10:23 PM PDT

Bellator19_medium

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (May 20, 2010) - MMA star Dan Hornbuckle and former U.S. Olympian Ben Askren both booked passage into the championship round of Bellator Fighting Championships' Season 2 Welterweight Tournament at Bellator 19 on Thursday with dominant performances.

Meanwhile, reigning Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Soto improved his record to a perfect 9-0 with a "Super Fight" victory over crafty UFC veteran Diego Saraiva.

The three fights - all dominant performances - were just part of another great night of Bellator action in front of a raucous crowd at the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas - the first of two consecutive Bellator events in the Lone Star State this month.

The night's most anticipated bout was undoubtedly Askren's fight with UFC veteran Ryan Thomas - a rematch made possible when Thomas (13-5) re-entered the Welterweight Tournament to replace late scratch Jim Wallhead.

But while the first Thomas-Askren fight ended in controversy (a disputed referee's stoppage), their fight on Thursday was controlled from the get-go by Askren, the two-time NCAA wrestling Champion at the University of Missouri. Askren held the dominant position for all three rounds, winning a clear-cut unanimous decision that improved his pro MMA record to 5-0. It was the first time that one of his fights had ever gone past the first round.

"It was a war ... he definitely came to fight," Askren said afterward. "I definitely had to dig deep. I was going for some submissions but he kept slipping out. It was a great fight."

Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney agreed, saluting Askren's commanding performance.

"Ben Askren was impressive," Rebney said in the post-fight press conference. "For someone this new to MMA to be able to put on a performance like that against a fighter like Ryan Tomas is a testament to his huge, huge talent. He's going to be tough guy to bet against."

Earlier in the night, Iraq War veteran Steve Carl (13-2) took Hornbuckle to the ground shortly after the opening bell of their semifinal-round fight, but "The Handler" maintained his composure on his back, using a tight kimura to end the fight just 2:31 into Round 1. Hornbuckle has now recorded 10 submission wins 10 nine knockouts in his 23 career fights.

After the fight, Rebney made the case that Hornbuckle is quickly emerging as one of the top 170-pound fighters in the world.

"He continues to evolve and grow as a mixed martial artist," Rebney said. "He is an awfully dangerous welterweight and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world at 170 who would go in as a favorite against him right now. I'm looking forward to watching him again next month."

In the "Super Fight," Soto assumed the dominant position early on in the fight and landed a huge elbow to Saraiva's forehead near the end of Round 1, opening a deep cut that forced the ringside doctor to stop the fight at the end of the round. It was the first time that Saraiva (18-9-1) had been stopped in 38 career pro bouts.

"It sucks that I had to end him with the cut, but that's the way it goes," Soto said afterward. "Now I'm just looking forward to fighting the winner of the tournament."

Rebney called the fight "a major statement" by Soto.

"This was a very dangerous fight for Joe," Rebney said. "But he came to us and said ‘I want the toughest guy you can find at 145.' With a performance like that against a fighter of Diego's caliber, it ‘s a great night for him."

The event also played host to six Local Feature Fights:

- Douglas Frey def. Aaron Wise via guillotine choke (0:49)

- Joshua Smith def. Donyiell Winrow via unanimous decision

- Johnny Bedford def. Jared Lopez via TKO (12:16)

- Scott Barrett def. Ty Lee via TKO (2:25)

- Joe Christopher def. Brandon McDowell via guillotine choke (1:36)

- Chas Skelly def. Daniel Pineda via kneebar submission (7:16)

Fans who missed Thursday night's action can watch all the best moments this weekend during special highlight shows on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2. Check your local listings for exact dates and times.

Bellator returns to action next week from the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio with two semifinal fights in the Season 2 Middleweight Tournament: Eric Schambari vs. Bryan "The Beast" Baker and Russian import Alexander Shlemenko vs. former NCAA all-American wrestler Jared Hess.

UFC Fan Expo 'Boston' announced for Aug. 27-28

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:26 PM PDT

Ufc-fan-expo_medium

Dana White wasn't messing around when he promised to pull out all the stops for the promotion's first-ever trip to Boston, Mass., which is scheduled for the TD Garden on Aug. 28, 2010.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today announced that it will coordinate a two-day "Fan Expo" at the nearby Hynes Convention Center from Aug. 27 right up until fight time to coincide with the major pay-per-view (PPV) event

Here's what White, a "Beantown"-area native, had to say about his big plans:

"I think everyone knows how much it means to me to bring the UFC to Boston and to give fans this two-day event packed with amazing UFC experiences."

Those "experiences" include meet and greets with legendary UFC, Pride FC and WEC fighters, mixed martial arts (MMA) demonstrations, grappling "Super Fights," fan-inspired special events, training and development sessions, as well as other combat related opportunities and entertainment.

Additionally, the third UFC Fan Expo, which is the first to be staged outside of "Sin City," is expected to attract more than "150 leading vendors covering roughly 200,000 gross square feet of space."

According the the release, the exhibit floor will also "feature apparel, electronic gaming, food & beverages, fight gear, fitness equipment and supplies, nutritional supplements, lifestyle products and much more."

Oh, and by the way, there are also some huge fights taking place that weekend,

UFC 118 is expected to be headlined by a rematch for the lightweight title between B.J. Penn and division champion Frankie Edgar, as well as another exciting 155-pound showdown between Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard.

Former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Randy Couture is also expected to introduce professional boxing champion James Toney to the Octagon.

Sounds like a blast.

UFC to make 'major announcement' on May 25 in Toronto

Posted: 20 May 2010 12:59 PM PDT

Ufccanada_medium

Is this the moment Canadian mixed martial arts fans have been waiting for?

The UFC today revealed that a "major announcement" is coming on May 25, 2010, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada, just two months after company President Dana White stormed Toronto's Eaton Centre for a public pep rally.

White expects MMA to eventually become the world's largest and most popular sport. Unfortunately, that vision of global domination has faced opposition in Ontario as Premier Dalton McGuinty recently indicated that MMA regulation was "not a priority."

Last year White was hoping to secure a show in Ontario at some point in 2010, setting his sights on Toronto's Rogers Centre in front of as many as 50,000 fans. Considering that one of the world's most popular fighters is a Canadian named Georges St. Pierre, that wasn't such an unrealistic goal.

Then again, nothing is possible unless the Ontario Athletic Commission lifts its ban on cagefighting, that while not a priority, could help generate millions of dollars for the local economy.

While McGuinty doesn't share his personal opinion of mixed martial arts as a sport, it's no secret that a majority of legislative blowhards still envision the UFC of yesteryear, when grotesquely out of shape bar room brawlers would duke it out for the chance to be submitted by Royce Gracie.

Ontario stands to make millions in profit and tax revenue should the UFC hold another Canadian mega-event in 2010, much like they did in Montreal with UFC 113 and then again in Vancouver with the upcoming UFC 115.

Like New York, Ontario may begin to feel the squeeze from its inhabitants if neighboring communities are raking in boku bucks while they cling to their holier-than-thou stance on MMA.

That may soon change for "The Empire State" and hopefully, Ontario.

Or maybe the UFC is announcing a partnership with Silly Pants to unveil a new line of cagefighting shorts for Canada's youth.

Stay tuned.

GSP set to train with Freddie Roach

Posted: 20 May 2010 11:57 AM PDT

Gsp-determined_medium

UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre broke the news that he will be spending some quality time with world renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach in the very near future.

"Rush" told Jim Rome on his nationally syndicated radio show that he will be flying to California today to begin training at Roach's Wildcard Gym in Hollywood.

Roach, best known for his training of seven-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, is coming off his supervision of yet another masterpiece less than a week ago on May 15. He was in the corner of trainee Amir Khan as he made his stateside debut at Madison Square Garden in New York. "King Khan" recorded an 11th round TKO victory to retain his WBA world light welterweight title after a dominant performance over challenger Paulie Malignaggi.

This will certainly not be the first time Roach has helped MMA fighters fine tune their "sweet science" repertoir. Anderson Silva, Andrei Arlovski, Gegard Mousasi, and Dan Hardy have all trained under his watchful eye in the past.

It will be interesting to see if the extra standup training pays tangible dividends for GSP in the future, who has been criticized recently by fans and pundits for not being able to finish fights.

Click here to listen to a snippet of GSP's interview with Rome in which he addresses his "conservative" fighting style. (Props: Jim Rome's Twitter Page)

GSP is scheduled to defend his title in a rematch against Josh Koscheck at a date and time to be named later.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for further developments.

Strikeforce Challengers 8 predictions, preview and analysis

Posted: 20 May 2010 11:57 AM PDT

Challengers-8_medium

The eighth installment of the Strikeforce Challengers is set for this Friday night (May 21) at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon. The five-fight main card will air live on the premium cable channel Showtime beginning at 11 p.m. ET on fight night.

Strikeforce Challengers serves as a proving ground to promote up-and-coming (and lesser known) fighters. The events are similar to what Elite XC used to promote with its SHO XC: "Challenger Series" on Showtime.

Portland native Matt "The Law" Lindland will look to get back into the win column after two straight losses when he squares off with young, up and coming jiu jitsu fighter "King" Kevin Casey in the night's main event. Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley will also be featured in the co-headliner opposite Nathan Coy.

To help get you better prepared for the festivities, I've given some analysis and predictions for the main card bouts that are set to hit the Showtime airwaves on Friday night.

185 lbs.: Matt "The Law" Lindland (21-7) vs. "King" Kevin Casey (3-1)

Casey is a young, strong, athletic Brazilian jiu jitsu fighter who honed his craft under the tutelage of Rickson Gracie. He's a regular on the grappling circuit, but he's still relatively green as a mixed martial artist.

That could certainly prove to be costly against a grizzled veteran like Lindland, but as "Jacare" Souza proved back in December by submitting "The Law" in the first round, youth and talent can overcome experience.

Lindland was dismantled in that fight, and the fact that he isn't anywhere close to the fighter he once was, was exposed big time. With that said, Casey isn't even in the same arena as "Jacare" as a mixed martial artist. He still has a lot more to prove.

The good news for him is that he has a great opportunity to do that in this fight. I just think it's a little bit too early for him to be facing a guy like Lindland, and I think he's going to struggle.

Lindland is battling for respect after losing three of his last four. I have a hard time picking a guy with only four pro fights on his record to come into a main event fight on Showtime and beat him in his hometown.

I think Lindland takes this guy to school early on and does enough damage in the first half of the fight to take the win on the scorecards. Cardio will probably be an issue for him and Casey's submission defense should hold up, but I still think he'll be able to hang on and grind out the decision with dominant positions and ground and pound.

Final prediction: Matt Lindland via decision.

170 lbs.: Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley (6-0) vs. Nathan Coy (8-2)

This will be Woodley's stiffest test to date. He'll also probably be facing the most hostile crowd he's seen so far as Coy is a hometown guy. However, I still don't see the outcome being any different than usual for "T-Wood." I expect the decorated collegiate wrestler to notch win number seven, and I expect it to be his seventh by submission as well.

Coy does have some nice momentum built up with three straight wins inside the first round, but he hasn't faced anybody as strong and explosive as Woodley yet. My money is on him be the one getting overwhelmed early on in this fight.

Coy likes to ground and pound his opponents and look for submissions. Now I'll admit that I haven't seen him fight many times, but I have seen Woodley fight. And that's good enough for me to believe Coy is going to have a good amount of difficulty pulling off that type of gameplan on Friday night.

"T-Wood" has the potential to be one of the next big stars in this sport. He improves every time we see him, and there's no reason to believe that won't continue to happen for the American Top Team trainee.

This is a fight that Woodley should win, and he will.

Final prediction: Tyron "T-Wood" Woodley via submission

170 lbs.: Roger Bowling (7-0) vs. Bobby Voelker (21-7)

This should be a fun fight for the fans. Both guys like to end fights with their hands, and both have a lot of confidence built up.

Voelker was on the winning end of an entertaining come from behind TKO win over Erik Apple his last time out for Strikeforce. Before that, he had won six of his previous eight with five TKO finishes. He's a battle tested veteran with good finishing ability, but he's going to be over-matched in this fight.

Bowling has demolished all seven of his professional opponents, and he's been waiting to finally get his chance to prove himself on a respectable stage. This is that chance for the heavy handed ex-boxer, and I don't think he's going to disappoint.

If Voelker had a stronger submission game, I'd give him a better chance to win because I'm not so sure about Bowling's ground defense. But he's a hitter, and that's going to play right into Bowling's hands ... literally.

I don't think that Voelker's length will be an issue. I think Bowling gets another early stoppage in a very entertaining stand-up fight for the Showtime audience.

Final prediction: Roger Bowling via technical knockout

170 lbs.: Nate Moore (6-1) vs. Tarec "Sponge" Saffiedine (8-2)

I like Nate Moore here. He trains with one of the best camps in the world at American Kickboxing Academy, which means he'll come in well prepared to win this fight on his feet against the Shihaishinkai Karate expert.

"Sponge" won't have a problem trading strikes, but I like Moore's power and aggression to be the difference on the feet. Tarec's karate training included a lot of judo and ground training as well. He has five career wins by submission, and I see that as being his best chance to score a victory.

I think Moore's takedown defense will hold up, though, and he'll either out-strike Saffiedine for a three round decision, or he'll connect on a left hook or something similar that will put the Belgium fighter to sleep. I like the AKA guy.

Final prediction: Nate Moore via technical knockout

155 lbs.: Pat "Bam Bam" Healy (22-15) and Bryan Travers (13-1)

Healy is another hometown Portland guy that will definitely have the crowd behind him on Friday night. Plus he's a veteran of nearly forty pro fights, with some big names on his resume. He'll definitely be on top of his game.

I still like Travers in this fight, though. I think he'll be too strong for "Bam Bam." He shouldn't have much trouble using his wrestling skills to get takedowns, maintain the top position on the floor, and score points with his ground and pound.

Four of his last five fights have gone to a decision, and I don't see Healy being very easy to finish off in his own backyard. I think Travers takes this one on the scorecards with some good positioning and ground and pound.

Final prediction: Bryan Travers via decision

That's a wrap. Sound off in the comments section below.

Team 'Shaolin' planning to appeal Strikeforce loss to Lyle Beerbohm at 'Heavy Artillery'

Beerbohm-ribeiro2_medium

Quoteworthy:

"Man, it's the first time I see a guy spending all the fight defending himself and getting off there with a loss. There were a lot of critics, because Shaolin attacked all the time and there was a judge that gave 30 to 27 for the other guy...I think they missed his name on the paper, it's not possible. They can't do that, is absurd, it's not right. Even if I have to ask the help of a lawyer, I will change this outcome."

After a controversial ending to the Lyle Beerbohm vs. Vitor Ribeiro fight from last Saturday's "Heavy Artillery" card in St. Louis, Nova Uniao leader Andre Pederneiras and "Shaolin" manager Alex Davis will appeal the official decision that saw "Fancy Pants" take the split decision. Pederneiras takes exception to the 30-27 scores and is hoping for a "No Contest" in his appeal. A pretty tall order, but does anyone think he has a case?

Georges St. Pierre vs Georges Laraque grappling match on 'Off the Record'

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:33 AM PDT

Georgesx2_medium

MMA vs. Boxing has been a hot topic lately. But MMA vs. Hockey?

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has accepted a challenge from friend and fellow Canadian Georges Laraque for a grappling match at the Tristar Gym in Montreal.

TSN will broadcast the showdown on Friday, May 21, 2010, at 6 p.m. ET on "Off the Record."

The 33-year old heavyweight hockey player, who last skated for the Montreal Canadiens, appeared with "Rush" on a recent episode of "Off the Record," where he promised to use his weight advantage against GSP and "pick him up and body slam him."

St. Pierre doesn't see it that way.

"The problem is Georges believes I am like a tomato can you can grab at the supermarket and you can lift it and do what you want. He's going to find out that it's not that easy. On the ice I would never go against him, he's going to beat me and I agree with that 100 percent, but on the floor I have no problem."

GSP is considered one of the sport's finest wrestlers depsite having no collegiate background. How he deals with Laraque's size and strength will all boil down to technique and speed.

No one in the UFC seems to have an answer for St. Pierre's takedowns. Will "BGL?" Tune into "Off the Record" on Friday night to find out.

Josh Koscheck: Georges St. Pierre doesn't have knockout power and I do

Quoteworthy:

"I don't think I need to get in Georges St-Pierre's head. He knows what kind of fighter I've improved (to) ... I'm going to have my wrestling so good that I'm going to force Georges St-Pierre into standing toe to toe with me and then I'm going to end up knocking him out, because I believe that Georges doesn't have knockout power and I do ... [In the first fight] I kind of just overlooked he was a good athlete and had the ability to learn wrestling so quick. I believe that I was young, naive and a little immature. I think now I'm wiser, older and a lot smarter when it comes to preparing and putting a game plan together."

Newly appointed Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12 Coach Josh Koscheck talks about his upcoming welterweight title fight against current division champion Georges St. Pierre at the conclusion of their participation in the Spike TV reality show. "Kos" went toe-to-toe with "Rush" at UFC 74: "Respect" back in 2007 but came up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision. Has he evolved enough over the three year period between fights to give GSP a run for his money? And does he have the power to knock the Canadian out? Could be a flash KO -- or it could be Wrestlemania. Early predictions?
