Bellator 19: Ben Askren wants to put Ryan Thomas to sleep to stop his complaining Posted: 17 May 2010 04:36 PM PDT GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (May 17, 2010) - The ongoing war of words between Bellator Welterweight Tournament semifinalists Ben Askren and Ryan Thomas continued on Monday with Askren predicting that their much-anticipated rematch this Thursday night at Bellator 19 will end the same way as their first meeting-albeit in much more decisive fashion. "I'm going to do the same thing I did the last time: I'm going to go in there and choke him," said Askren, the 25-yearold former NCAA all-American and U.S. Olympian. "Only this time I'm gonna put him to sleep all the way so he can't complain about it." Askren vs. Thomas II is part of a nine-fight card at Bellator 19, which will broadcast live on FOX Sports Net from the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas (just outside Dallas). Highlights from the show will also air this weekend on NBC, Telemundo and the cable network mun2. Also scheduled is the second Welterweight Tournament semifinal - Dan Hornbuckle vs. Steve Carl - and a non-tile "Super Fight" between reigning Bellator Featherweight Champion Joe Soto and UFC veteran Diego Saraiva. But thanks in part to the bad blood that has developed between Askren and Thomas, their fight is suddenly emerging as the night's most anticipated fight. The two first met at Bellator 14 in Chicago on April 15th during the quarterfinal round of the Welterweight Tournament. Roughly 2:30 into Round 1, Askren locked Thomas into a tight anaconda choke. After a few seconds, the cage referee stopped the fight, much to the dismay of Thomas and his corner, who protested that Thomas gave no indication that he wanted the fight stopped. "It was a bad call by the referee," Thomas, a 12-4 veteran of the UFC, said afterwards. "I was fine ... I was totally fine." In his remarks Monday, Askren criticized Thomas' handling of the entire situation. "I think he's been really immature about the whole thing from Day 1," Askren said. "I've just tried to go about my own business and prepare for the fight, and he's been out talking [trash] on the message boards. That's the kind of thing I might have done when I was 16 years old - not a grown man. It's all pretty childish if you ask me." Andrei Arlovski: 'I'm 15-8 right now and it's horrible' Posted: 17 May 2010 11:00 AM PDT Props: MMA Weekly Quoteworthy:
A disappointed Andrei Arlovski reflects on his losing performance against Antonio Silva at Strikeforce: "Heavy Artillery" last Saturday night (May 15) in St. Louis. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion has pretty much hit rock bottom, having dropped three consecutive bouts -- two of them under the Strikeforce banner. "The Pitbull" vows to be back and Scott Coker sounds more than happy to have him, but can the Belarusian recapture the mojo that made him one of the sport's most popular fighters? |

Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos 'Cuddles' with Jan Finney on June 26 in San Jose Posted: 17 May 2010 07:57 AM PDT Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristiane Santos (9-1) will likely defend her 145-pound title against Jan Finney (8-7) in the Ohio native's promotional debut at "Fedor vs. Werdum" from the HP Pavilion on June 26 in San Jose. First reported by MMA Rising, MMAmania.com was able to confirm the pending match-up earlier today. "Cyborg" was last seen laughing off an earnest uprising attempt from distressed Dutch damsel Marloes Coenen back in January of this year. The champion's successful defense at "Miami" was her third straight win under the Strikeforce banner and her ninth in a row. It was also the Brazilian's seventh TKO stoppage. It's no secret that outside of a select few, there may be only a handful of female challengers capable of giving Santos the fits. Which is why Finney may come as a surprising choice. "Cuddles" had a rocky start to her mixed martial arts career, dropping six of seven bouts including four straight defeats from 2005-07. Two of her seven career losses have come to Miesha Tate and Erin Toughill. To her credit, Finney has managed to right the ship and put together a solid four-fight winning streak. She last competed at Freestyle Cage Fighting (FCF) 40, taking a tough split decision from Adrienna Jenkins. She's on a roll -- but will she roll over for the world's most dangerous woman? Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Werdum" is exactly what it sounds like -- a Showtime event featuring a main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Fabricio Werdum. Up-and-coming heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley is also expected to compete on the June 26 card opposite Ron Sparks. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this still-developing fight card. |

UFC Quick Quote: Joe Lauzon 'disgusted' that brother Dan 'dragged his name through the mud' Posted: 17 May 2010 06:40 AM PDT
-- UFC lightweight and former TUF competitor Joe Lauzon responds to a Boston Herald post (via his official blog) that accused him and the rest of his team of abandoning his brother Dan two weeks prior to "The Upgrade's" big fight against Efrain Escudero at UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas. Dan is quoted in the article as being abandoned by his team and contends that he was holding up his end of the bargain while Joe accuses him of dogging it in training camp for every UFC fight. Is there a chance these brothers and mixed marital artists can patch things up? Or is the fight game just like any other business in that it's never good to involve your family? |
